Small Dining Room Help!

We have just finished a mainfloor renovation, including a brand new kitchen and I’m now looking to update our dining table. Our dining area is small so I’m struggling with the best option for our space. I would like to keep the white cabinets along the wall but replace rug, light fixture, table and chairs. The length of the room is 10 feet and the width is 8’4 expanding to 9’6 at the deepest part of the bay window. I’ve mocked up the floor plan to scale in the attached drawing.

I was thinking a round/oval table would complement the bay window nicely. Table will be custom made so we can do any size. Options I’ve considered are:

  1. 54” round table
  2. Oval dining table with/without a banquette bench on one side.
  3. 42” or 48” round table with a leaf.

Would appreciate any advice on sizing.

How many would you like to seat?

    Ideally, 6.

We have similar in our kitchen, found the best selection ( for us ) was the “Aria” line of tables from Room & Board. Very wide selection of sizes, finishes, etc. Click on the link you’re interested in & scroll down,it will tell you how many it will seat ( e,g., the 61” oval seats 6, etc.)

I think oval would be anice shape in that spot I agree a pedestal aht ids your style A nice saarinen table would be great in that space Please get a chandelier hung much lower to actually light the table

Btw, our 78” long dining table barely seats 6 because of the legs, that’s why I prefer pedestal …

Yes, the Saarinen tables ( & tulip chairs ) are beautiful. My neighbors have the 96” long table + 8 or 10 of those greatTulip chairs , I never counted), but they’re very expensive ( for me ), they’re very wealthy, I’m not, so that’s why I buy R & B, better customer service anyway is a plus. But some people have VERY deep pockets.

In a small dining area, the key is choosing pieces that work hard without overwhelming the room:

    • A round or oval table improves flow in tight spaces
    • Upholstered chairs with open backs keep things airy
    • One vertical storage piece (like a tall cabinet) is better than multiple small ones
    • A mirror on one wall can make the room feel wider
    • Pendant lighting centered over the table defines the space

Keep the palette light and let one element, like art or a centerpiece, be the visual anchor.

There are tons of knock offs of the table that are affordable even Ikea has one th Tulip chairs would be too big in the space anyway. Get the dog crate out please .

Funny, every time I see//hear a reference to IKEA I’m reminded of what my brother told his two daughters when they graduated from college & we’re moving out of the dorm room & one’s first apt.: “Don’t bother moving the IKEA stuff, just leave it there” ….. I think some of their basic things are okay but ….

I think you need to understand Ikea they have throw away stuff but they also have stuff that lasts as long as you want it . Slipcovers , awesome kitchens . Great kitchen storage stuff and serveware . Still IMO best bang for your buck for kitchens cabinets . BTW a table is not an item that gets a lot of were and tear so why not go knock off if the budget is small. BTW some of the best stuff from them is made for small spaces too

To make the room seem spacious, select a 42 or 48" table with a leaf.

The space would look better if the storage on the wall did not exceed 30" in height.

Could you have a banquette seat built in to the bay window itself? That would provide seating on one side of the table. You could have chairs on the other side. This might be a good way to utilize every square inch of space.

PC, have you SEEN the IKEA knockoff in person? 40”wide, way too small, & IMO very cheap looking, plastic!

How often do you want to seat 6? On a daily basis?

i have to admit I have not but there are many knockoffs of the Saarinen that do not bereak the bank This is BTW a tiny spot and maybe the Ikea one is okay OOPs missed the custom part Ther eis no room for a 54" round table either You do need at least 24' all around for chairs to actuall pull out to sit down and once that happens no one moves You have 8'4" the bay hs no purpose except for maybe one chair backed into it
