a strange week bird-wise

last month

last Sunday temperatures dropped & it snowed.it snowed again on Tuesday & temps stayed low all week. on Monday I noticed that there were no birds out & about. i saw my resident Cooper hawk on the lot behind me chowing down on a kill & a Carolina wren made a brief appearance but that was it, the trees & wires & skies were devoid of all birds. that night I heard my resident owl calling when I let the dog out. next day i saw a lone sparrow, not a tweet or a flutter elsewhere. then yesterday it warmed up some & they started trickling back in. today all is normal. i had robins staring at my frozen bird baths so i carried buckets of hot water out & thawed them which started a frenzy. a herd of robins showed up fighting for a turn to drink & bathe. i had to refill one 3 times as they splashed all the water out. only thing that i can think of is they moved onto a food source.

Rober, I love hearing about your birds. :-) I am very surprised that I have no birds. I see no birds and hear no birds, day after day. Walking the neighborhood, the place I see a few sparrows is near a neighbor that hangs a bird feeder. I used to put out feeders and try to keep the birdbaths going in the winter, but, I found I was letting them down too often with the birdbaths, having to bring the hot water out from inside. But I did have a fair amount of birds all winter. And filling feeders was attracting other things besides birds. I am tempted though to try it again. I hate seeing no birds. Maybe starting in January, if all goes well, I could try starting that again.

It seems like a tough winter so far for the poor birds. So cold and windy.

still mostly gone. 1 lone mockingbird, my ever present Carolina wren, a couple of cardinals, and occasional sparrows. my typical winter birds are nowhere to be seen.

this morning's first bird sighting was of my resident red shouldered hawk pounce on and fly off with a squirrel. a Marlin Perkins moment.

I've never seen a hawk take a squirrel. Still no birds here. Haven't seen a single one all week.

as the morning progressed more birds showed up. i have a mix of black capped chickadees, tree sparrows, cardinals, bluebirds, cardinals, & juncos. tomorrow the temps are going to be brutal so i suspect they'll vanish again.

so this morning i'm looking out the window while I'm nuccing a cup of tea i saw the hawk miss a squirrel. the squirrel fled & the hawk looked perplexed ( if possible ) & flew up and sat on my fence for a spell. the few birds that were out hid in the bushes.

things are looking normal there's only been one red shouldered hawk coming around for quite awhile. I'm thinking that something happened to 2nd one. they mostly mate for life but will move on if something happens to a mate.

Rober, I've been walking around the neighborhood and I saw about a dozen sparrows congregating on the top of a large, dense bush that I think has thorns. And I saw a hawk in the sky. That's all I've seen. I am hoping I will see my way clear to feed the birds starting in January for the rest of the winter. I'd enjoy seeing some birds ... it seems like an empty landscape without them. Glad you are enjoying your birds!
