Hancock and Moore Document Harness Leather

last month

Hello Fellow Houzz Members!

I am considering purchasing a second hand Hancock and Moor chair, but distance is preventing an in-person visit. I would very much value anyone posting photos of what this type of leather looks like. Thank you so much!

Why do you have NO picture of the chair too far in distance to view?!

There is no guarantee.....leathers vary in dye lot EVEN when brand new.

    Document Harvest?

Well ther eis no way I would consider buying anything without a picture of that item so ask the seller for the pic Keep in mind harness leather is very rustic looking .

Sorry for my lack of clarification--I have a picture of the chair, but given the fact that leathers vary by dye lot, I was hoping for additional photos of what Document Harness looks like in different environments and in different lighting.

Your best option is to get a whole bunch of pics of the seller's chair from all sides and in sunlight. An I-Phone can have good color representation phone to phone.

You do not need us to show you what Hancock and Moore harness leather looks like. Just google it. You like it, you don't. Your call, and definitely not ours.

We have a 15 year Document Harnesss glider recliner by Hancock & Moore. We are buying a new recliner because the pigment has worn off so bad on the footrest. It has also worn off at some seams but that is not really noticeable. I really don't have any complaints - I think the material has actually held up very well for 15 years, well, except for the footrest. I'm not really a leather chair person so I just assume the issue we have with our chair is to be expected. I came across this question while trying to educate myself on leather chairs.

I have to amend my last comment - I didn't realize how cracked our leather is in the chair until I took the photos. The last photo (of the entire chair) was taken during the morning, the others were taken at night so not under natural light. But I still hope they help answer the question you have.

As a (now retired) dealer for Hancock and Moore, I can tell you your recliner is well-loved and used. It's not time to retire it, but it could use a little TLC. Lift up the bottom seat cushion and see if there is a serial number on the "Hancock and Moore" tag, it should be on a white lable. With the serial number call H&M and request a new Seat Cushion Core and get an Extra firm one. Aslo ask for new back core inserts. The cores themselves are free of charge to the original owner, but you will have to pay a flat shipping charge of $ 100. Well worth it. The new seat and back cores will firm up those puddles and be more supportive. Your Relincer shows a lack of maintenance, I can see wear and some hair oil stains on the back that would not be there if cleaned and conditioned every 6 months. While you can't easily restore the one you have, should you buy a new unit in the future, the cleaning/conditioning is the best thing you can do to insure the hide lasts.

Thank you for the advice. You are correct. I was not even aware of the need for maintenance - it never crossed my mind. I wasn't kidding when I said I'm not a leather chair person (I like cozy). That is hubby's chair. Thank you for the heads up. What product do you suggest using on it?

May I ask some additional advice? What should I look for when selecting a leather for the chair? I discovered it's more involved that simply selecting a color. While at the HM dealer, I found a leather I like for a new chair. It is protected, it was Class IV but that was crossed out and a 5 replaced the IV. The gal checked on the leather and it has been discontinued. It is Luggage Russett and has a smooth and shiny look to it. It appears to me to be more "formal". A couple other samples I looked at had more texture to them and seemed more informal. My head is spinning - I don't know what to look for. Also, life would be so much simpler if they had more chairs in their store so I could just point and say "I like that". Any suggestions or even suggestions on where I should go to learn more about leather?

Several years ago I bought a leather couch from a small NC company - they had a blog as well as a series of videos all about different leathers that helped me decide, some of it comes down to whether you don’t mind scratches etc that leather can show https://cococohome.com/blog/pet-friendly-leather-sofa

I used to have a huge information forum on leather at www.myfurnitureforum.com which was my website. I retired and the forum no longer exists. It would take ten pages to go into leather types! I can tell you that there is no perfect leather, no matter what anyone else may say - they all have their strengths and weaknesses. In a nutshell, you have three types of genuine leather which are Finished, Semi-Aniline, and Pure Aniline. Finished is a painted leather and 90% of people buy in this category. Your chair is a finished leather as is the Document in this thread. A thin coat of paint (pigment) is sprayed on the leather. It can wear off, as can all paint - but is good at standing up to stains. Pure Aniline is dyed, not painted. These are most costly hides and they can sun-fade and stain from hand and hair oils. However they do not lose their color and if cleaned and conditioned regularly are the finest hides. Semi-Aniline is a hybrid between the two and begins as a dyed leather but its final coats are pigmented.

When you see a GR 4 crossed out and GR 5 put on the tag, it means there was a price increase. I never did that in my store because it looks cheezy, I had H&M make me new stickers.

Luggage Russett was dropped a long time ago, probably four years. That store should pull it from their samples. They may have a few scraps leftover at H&M but probably not enough to do more than a ottoman.

The BEST place to learn about leather is to take a private tour at Hancock and Moore in Hickory NC. You'll get several hours of one-on-one education and the tours are free of charge. You get to see all the hides, hundreds of pieces under production and talk to the actual workers there. They're very proud of the product they make there and LOVE to show it off. I'll be at the factory 1st week of February as I'm picking up two new Alvin Recliners in leather Liberty Caramel (Pure Aniline) for my home office. I could have them shipped, but I haven't see the crew at the factory in two years and want to go visit!

I use products from this company, she's a small businessperson and extremely well-respected in the industry. She is the "Go-To" person when a manufactuer has a leather problem.

You can somewhat restore your chair but its pretty badly worn in the footrest area. The leather can be sanded down and painted again, but it won't ever look like new. If you have the capability to haul the recliner to Pam at damagedleathersolutions and drop if off (guess it depends on what part of the country you are in) she can do a better job at repair than most anyone around. You would have to leave it to be sure. She is in Asheville NC

Thanks so much for your extremely helpful responses; I did not see any of this until long after the holidays but am very grateful for the info. Document Harness...seeing those pics (thank you so much HU-371970771!) and learning it was "painted" was the deciding factor. It's definitely not for me.

On another note...I absolutely loved The Keeping Room forum and sure wish both that and your store were still around. In fact, when I learned the forum was being closed, I saved tons of your notes for future reference. You really should write a book!

Thank you! After nearly four decades in the furniture business, my body was worn out from unloading trucks and it was time to retire. I don't know if anyone would buy my book, but I have a lot of good stories!

A well deserved retirement for sure! I KNOW people would buy your book--it's impossible to get good info like that and combined with your stories, we could learn and be entertained!!
