Library Room Time Sensitive Design Help Needed

last modified: 8 months ago

I'm beginning a renovation in my bedroom with a mix of ikea and custom cabinets that I'll be using liquid wood to turn every bookcase and wall into an all wood library with sliding doors that reveal a murphy bed.

My first question: Should the doors, baseboards and/or windows be taken from white to the same dark wood color? Most wooden home libraries I've seen have a floor that's the same color as the rest of the room, but my floors are a light wood as where everything I'm having done above the floors are going to be wood (other than the ceiling).

Second question: I have a recessed ceiling and not sure if I should make the vertical part of the ceiling wood as a continuation of the wall, or have it white. The room is currently all white and I didn't notice but the last painters painted that portion of the ceiling like the walls and I think it's the drywall material meaning maybe it's supposed to more of a wall than ceiling.

Third: Should I put molding on any of the walls so it doesn't go from bookcases to a flat wooden wall? I have some molding on lower half of the dining room and foyer, but my entire house is otherwise Mid Century Modern, so not sure.

Fourth: Any other design or construction tips you have might, please, I'd be so thankful to hear them! The contractors are beginning today, December 12th and ending before the 18th.

Do you and your contractors have experience with liquid wood?

This is such a cool project and idea. I love it. Without knowing more about you though i would keep the bookcases white.

Using liquid-wood to cover all that white seems like a crazy idea!

Specially for shelves that will have books, or decorative items, on them. Make sure you really let it cure for a long time before placing items on the shelves, but even then you might still get stuff sticking to the paint.

Interested to see the finished results ...

Do you have samples of what the liquid wood will look like on the IKEA shelves?

I've never used liquid wood - but I can't even imagine how much work it would take to make all of those white laminate shelves to actually look like wood.

I've seen many IKEA hacks where billy bookcases have been used in offices/closets - and they've been painted a moody color and look really good. Will all of the units/shelves have face frames added in order to make them thicker?

I think I need to know a lot more about this . Why sliding doors for a murphy bed they have great bottomes that hide the bed nicley . Ikea atyle usually does not lend itself to looking like high end wood work and I do not think slapping ligiud wood on them will fool anyone I agree a nice dark moody color for cabinets and walls could work. The cabinets on either side of the door are not good and that whole wall with the dark piece in the middle is the murphy be why not gat a proper unit for the murphy yne design all the cabinets to work with that style . I have added trim to Ikea cabinets to make them a bit less contempory but not some fake wood thing . It is hard to say what your plan in your head is by looking at these pics. Do you have 1000s of books to line the walls . I love a library space but not just slapped up in a bedroom that is nothing like the sapce you want Your bookshelves IMO need to go to the drop down ceiling all the way around. Waht are the cabinets in front of the windows ? This is agood way to do those cabinets and even the drk color is good

Not going to lie I see nothing but a potential disaster in the making. You need 2000 books, and it is extremely difficult to replicate the luxury library........with the materials you plan. Sorry...

A regular bed, some well done cabinetry. A fabulous wall color, and not this.

You Might get a white kitchen @ Home Depot......just don't think it will ever look like Christopher Peacock , or what's her name in Something's Gotta Give..

    Why? It tries too hard.

Do something ELSE and do it better.I also think Ikea is fine in certain applications just not this. and certainly not this MUCH. of the "this"
