Longchamp Le Pliage tote?

last month

Just found out my son’s SO will be spending time with my son and me this Christmas. She usually went home to spend the holiday with her mother and family. Sadly, her mother died this year.

Anyway, Id like to get her some nicer gifts. I always get her a membership to a local garden (Chanticleer) .

I was thinking this tote might be a nice gift for her. I know some of you have them , thanks to the TX GTG. After looking into them, I am wondering if you recommend the nylon one or the recycled canvas one? Medium of large? Any favorite color?

She’s in her 50s and is tall, if that makes a difference. She is a sweetheart and I am so glad she and my son are together, but I do wish they’d get married! I do not meddle.

Medium. Large is big enough to be a weekender. All of mine are nylon which is coated on the backside. I would also recommend the longer handle so that she can put it on her shoulder. Colors: I currently have 2 mediums, one is navy, one is gray. I also have a large hot pink and a small dark green.

My first was a custom color: dark taupe with a black stripe. The flap was embossed with my initials. It had to be ordered from Longchamps and had a long production time, IIRC.

Ooo, love that color, Mtn. Not sure I have the stamina to face Nordstrom Rack right now, although its fun to dig around looking for deals.

Oh.. they have a number of styles and colors I havent seen!

Ded.. I rarely step in a store these days. You should still be able to order online with Christmas delivery.

Funky, I went to the mall one day this week and felt like I had run a marathon, plus I swear I was the oldest person there, by far.

I would say to get the large over the medium. The medium to me, is just a larger purse. How do you think she will use it? Purse or as a tote? Definitely the long handles for a tote. Maybe the shorter handles if you think she would carry it like a handbag.

We got one's for all of us while in Paris this summer and had them monogrammed for the DD's. Mine had an Eiffel Tower embossed on it. We all got the Large, long handle. I actually just received some of the inserts for them that I purchased off of A.

I should own stock in Longchamp-lol. I have been using and loving for about 25 years. I think the large tote with long handles is great for a gift. Just find out what her favorite color is.

@mtnrdredux_gw: I have that one you bought for your daughter. The problem with it is that it's heavy to carry when full , and no way to add a shoulder strap; I may add more than one should? I do pack in my checked luggage for extras coming home. I also have the expandable travel bag. I think it's great for road trips, but very heavy on air trips.

Edited to add: we buy our 3 granddaughters a "designer" handbag once a year. One was the small pale pink Longchamp tote; it's their favorite bag.

    I bought it on line!

Both of mine are nylon with the longer handle but they're older. DD bought one for me when she was in Paris over 20 years ago and the other is expandable that I picked up during a Nordstrom sale.

There are a lot of discussions on the forums about the pros and cons of nylon vs canvas. The nylon is lighter, easier to fold and therefore more packable. Canvas is heavier, more structured and almost has a leather-like appearance. I don't know if it makes a difference but according to Longchamp's site the coated canvas is "recycled polyamide canvas comprised

of fishing nets, pre-consumer waste and carpets, these bags offer a noble second life to the materials used."

I just wish they made one with long crossbody straps.

Ded,I have three Les Pliages, a small, medium and large, and all are nylon. The large in navy s the one I use most. i’ve had them for twenty years at least and they’ve held up beautifully. Agree with recommendation for longer handles. I don’t have them and wish I did— I can put the shorter ones on my shoulder but it’s not as comfortable.

Nordstrom Rack online often has good sales on them. I think it's a great idea and I agree about the longer handle. You can find them on Etsy and there are ways of attaching them even if the bag doesn't have carabiner things.

I just purchased this one for DD for Christmas. I am not suggesting it, I just thought y'all would get a kick out of it. I asked her numerous times if she wanted larger but she said she really wanted the small one for wallet and phone. I purchased a shoulder strap on Etsy.
It looks silly if you ask me but she and her sister have ooohed and aaaahed over it. (We had an early present exchange) The toddler loved holding it, he looked like he was carrying a baby brief case!

Here is the link to the straps. The package was wrapped nicely and the attachments seemed to work well. Durability has yet to be determined.

Thanks for all the tips. I may post a link to the one I plan to order (tbd) so you all can tell me if Im ordering the right one. I think the medium size would be best for her.

Maybe Ill order one for myself, as well!

I have 2 leather Cuir Le Pliages - one is black, one navy. I had ordered a deep walnut brown but Saks off 5th sent a navy and when I called the brown was sold out. They offered another price reduction so I kept it. I'd still rather have the mahogany. Saks Off 5th has a red one listed on clearance. It's fairly large but still lightweight. The 18" drop isn't long enough for crossbody so I ordered longer fabric straps from A.

Removable leather shoulder strap, 18" drop

I don't think they make this version any longer. Longchamp's website isn't always that helpful so I'll check a department store and sometimes get a better description.

I had no idea there are so many choices!

I have both the medium long handle bag and the large duffle style bag. Have had them forever and like both sizes. I pack the larger one to have in case I need more cargo space when traveling. I have checked it with no issues (usally full of clothes I've worn) on return flights. They are hard to beat for style and durability - I think your son's SO will love to receive one. And yes, buy yourself one!

I always liked them. When DD2 graduated from college, she became aware of Longchamps and she enlightened me. We did get her one but I don't recall what ever happened to it... I do like them. I'm a novice though like you ded... Good info about longer handles. Who knew? So you order the longer handles separately? Learning curve. thank you

    Great gift.

I have tried five times to post a reply to this thread and it disappeared each time. Maybe Im in GW jail.

Well, finally it showed up. Here’s a screenshot of the one Im thinking of ordering either in navy or cognac. Hope its the right style.

That is exactly the one I’m looking at sitting across the room from me! I don’t think you can go wrong with either color!

That's the one I have in brown. It's really a handy everyday size - not too big, not too small.

My other Le Pliage is expandable in dark purple. You can see the zipper running around the middle of the bag. I've packed that one in my suitcase in case I need a larger bag. i think it will expand it by 4 or 5 inches.

The corners of the bags may show wear over time and Longchamp will repair them once by sewing a new seam which makes the corner just a little smaller. I'm careful with mine and the corners are fine. The bags are actually flexible enough that you could sew it yourself.

@mariecate: I have the Le Pliage Energy Small Crossbody Tote. The strap is too short for crossbody and it's WIDE. I bought a longer, thinner strap for it on "amazing"; it's fine now.

Maddie - I'm with you on that. None of their straps are long enough for crossbody.not even the XL straps they sell on their website. The one I use the most is the leather Le Pliage Cuir with narrow straps but they're only long enough to wear on the shoulder. I don't care for the wide canvas straps they sell, I'm carrying a purse not luggage. . I'd like to find a long strap in black leather.

Maire_cate: I bought the VanEnjoy full grain leather crossbody strap. It works well with the tote

  • last month

    Thank you Maddie.

I just looked at their site and they have a nice selection of adjustable straps in both smooth and pebbled leather and different widths. It looks like it would work well with my bag.

Maire Cate I have looked at the expandable bags but never bought one. I may ask Santa for one in brown 🤔

I never realized that I had (or maybe still have) one of these totes! I got it as a gift 20+ years ago and never used it. It lived in a drawer with some clutches and old wallets. It is either in a box somewhere in my storage closet or I sent it to the thrift store when we moved from LA.
