Paint - Ben Moore AURA vs Sherwin Williams EMERALD

last month

Do you recommend BM Aura or SW Emerald and why? I'm not DIY-ing. I'm hiring painters. I'm concerned about durability and paint odor as I'm very chemically sensitive.

BACKGROUND:

Every painter I have ever worked with uses Benjamin Moore paints. They've use Aura and have had no problems with odor. We are getting quotes for our condo -- in a different city, and so far both painters use SW. They use Duration or even lower grade. They have not heard of Aura but will use what I ask for.

My gut says go with Aura because I know it works with my allergies, and I'll hope that the painters are fine using the product even if they haven't used it before. I'm curious about other people's thoughts.

Price difference between the two is not an issue for me.

^^ Seems to me that is very comprehensive - and not to mention, great advice - from @Lori A. Sawaya.

I can understand you being interested in what other people’s experiences have been with SW products. But anyone else’s experiences with their paint really doesn't give you any information as to how the paint will affect you.

Thanks @freedomplace1 and @Lori A. Sawaya. Reading your comments makes me think, what the $&*# am I thinking??? Of course I have to go with what I know works for me and my body.

It seems there are many more SW stores around here than BM stores and that is likely why painters around here use SW more often. The other homes I have had painted were in Philly and NYC where Benjamin Moore seems to have a stronger foothold.

Glad that neither of you are saying anything like - "Aura is so hard to use if you are not used to it. Don't ask them to use it!"

Just want to mention, for our bath remodel we purchased BM Aura paint because I thought it was more preferred than SW brand (I normally use SW on everything). The paint contractor was an avid user of SW paint. I purchased the primer and paint needed for the job.

During the painting he told me he didn't like the Aura paint because, to him, it went on much thinner, so our walls needed 3 coats! Mind you I bought primer to be used first but he preferred to use the paint for all 3 coats. The room turned out great, but the primer would have been cheaper for the first coat rather than using $$$ BM Aura for a primer coat.

So, you'll want to specify this part on using any primer needed.

I would always choose BM over SW . The painters where I live get a deal with SW so of course they use it . If I had my choice I would do F&B all the time but BM is usually my choice . I also choose C2 just because I lke their colors sometimes

I usually do the painting myself and have used both brands. I prefer to use BM Aura.

I stopped using SW when I painted one bedroom and the SW paint started bubbling while it was drying. It was the strangest thing. I had no issues painting any of the other rooms in that house with BM Aura.

I have 2 gallons of F & B for the guest bedroom and that will be my first time using that brand. I'll paint the room myself ... just need to get motivated to do it!

Bearbev, did you use BM Aura Bath & Spa for the bathroom or just the BM Aura?

I too often use Farrow and Ball, but not going to do it in this condo. I have had many contractors hate on Farrow and Ball, they don't like using it.

@chispa it was Bath & Spa
