marble slabs just on shower walls?

Has anyone had a negative experience using marble on shower walls, or is most of the concern really about marble on the shower floor? I’m afraid I’ve fallen in love with real marble, but I’m concerned about upkeep and long-term performance. I’m considering a marble slab on the walls with a coordinating porcelain tile on the floor for easier cleaning, since the floor seems to get the grimiest. I’d love to hear real-world experiences.

Marble behaves like marble, no matter where you use it. It’s porous, etches, scratches, chips, and needs specialty cleaners, etc.

If the marble has hidden iron deposits in the stone, they may appear once water hits them on a continuing basis. I suggest you use a porcelain slab instead.

I have marble on both the walls and floor of my shower. It is a beautiful color of blue and matched my tub surround and vanity top, had to have it! 😉 It is so hard to get the walls clean. Soap scum builds up quickly and as I’m limited in what I can use on it, it never really seems entirely clean to me. I would not make the same choice again.
