I plan to turn my guest bedroom into a home gym. I have a treadmill, barbell, and dumb bells. I want to add mirrors. the dresser will stay in the room but all other furniture will be removed. we would like to get a murphy bed at some point. the room is 15x18. any ideas are greatly appreciated!

Don't spend the money on a murphy bed. They are not comfortable, even if you buy the best mattress. I tried to talk my parents out of one, but they went ahead. Hate sleeping on it, so I bring my own twin airbed when I stay over alone! My mother is now looking at having the murphy bed unit removed and replacing it with a sofa-bed.

Murphy beds can absolutely be comfortable. The one at my in laws has the same mattress we have at home. I love it. Sofa beds are the worst. Murphy beds have come along way and you just need to research proper options. In terms of the gym are you putting a tv in? We have one jn our converted guest room and we put it on an articulating arm. I can see it from the treadmill height or pull it out and angle toward floor if I am on a mat

Perhaps you need two plans. One for now until you add the murphy bed. You don’t have a lot of equipment so items can go anywhere. Create an inviting space with paint color, good lighting, tv, etc. This may help. https://kbhwriting.com/home-gym-layout-ideas-for-every-space/

If a mirror is not a priority, perhaps wait to add until after room is set up for guests (see idea below). I’d also remove the dresser so equipment can be moved against its wall when guests are over. I think shelving will be more useful for both your needs and guests.

    Sky blue ceiling sounds nice.
Arrange sturdy racks to safely hold barbells and weights.
Have open access shelves so you can easily reach towels and first aid items.
Mirrors placed to allow you to see your body from several angles need to be firmly fastened.
Hang large posters...inspirational themes and also large print first aid instructions/ illustrations as falls and other mishaps can easily happen when you are distracted by mirror gazing.
Ensure you have sufficient lighting,a laundry basket to corral towels and sweaty workout wear, and a spot to keep a mop.
Have an area for tv and music equipment.
A small fridge for bottled water /drinks if you have room.
Do show us your completed space.

You want a space to be used for opposing functions - both a vigorous workout and restful sleep. I think you have a good idea to set up a murphy bed not only to use the floor space when needed for lots of movement, but to stow that function away until needed. Using that same reasoning, I'd look at storage solutions for the workout equipment so it can (mostly) be stowed when guests use the bedroom function. There are Murphy cabinets for equipment, a Pivot system that can double as a bed and power rack, or wall mounted systems.

To keep it from looking like the neighborhood commercial gym, incorporate soft touches like plants, lighting and mirrors that are suited for home use.

IMO a gym needs wall mounted mirror always. I assume since a bed is still going to be there it will remain a guest room too. I love muphy beds and a the mattress is the whole comfort thing. But if this space will aslo be aguest room then an actual way to store workout weights etc needs to be factored in . I would need to see all the eqipment you ar eplanning to help at all.

Treadmills take up a ton of space , there are ones that fold up to move so again a closet where it can go when you have guests would be perfect . I love those home gym ideas posted but not cheap for sure . No matter how you do this you will want , IMO, room for the murphy bed to be used whenever without completely redong that space each time . I use a bench for home work out too is that also figure into this . If you have 2 closets than that is good but how big are they? I never use a dresser in a guest room I put a small , narrow dresser in the closet you might want to think about that too That would free up some space .

Murphy beds can be made with shelving and drawers for guests. But what about their hanging clothes? This room needs careful planning to work as needed for two goals. If you measure the room and post all walls, closets, etc. that might help the pros to design with you.
The equipment you’re planning to keep in there matters too. Everything must be measured and posted.

And yes Murphy beds can be comfortable.

There are two closets in the room according to the pictures.

Yes you want to plan this out and have it he comfortable but a lot depends on how often you have guests and what is a priority to you. In 2025 a guest slept in our guest room for 2 nights total. That was it. So it was a real eye opener about how we should be using the space and it absolutely isn’t prioritizing comfort for a guest. Do we want them happy when here? For sure but since we use it the other 363 days that’s the focus by far.

Thank you all for the feedback!! This isn't our primary guest room and we haven't actually had a guest stay in here in a few years. The murphy bed is not a necessity, but if we do get one it will go between the windows and be vertical w/ mirrors ideally. So I would be I keep that option available, but we aren't going to add one yet.

In hindsight, I should have posted more angles in the initial post, so I will try to add those later. There are actually 3 closets and then a door to the hall way and the other to the bathroom. I would like to mount a TV somewhere in the room and then have mirrors mounted on 2 walls.

The dresser that is in there is staying, as well as the bulk treadmill that is already in there. I guess I'm having a hard time figuring out treadmill and mirror placement. I'll add more pictures when I can to offer a better view of the whole room from different angles.

Thank you all again for your recommendations!! I really appreciate it!

I might start with the treadmill and TV since I love to watch TV while on the treadmill. I have done tvs on the bottom of a murphy bed in lofts it works so the mirror there is a great idea

No dresser. Plan on clothes storage space for guests in the nightstands to free up room for gym equipment.
