This is a picture of the house. Our adult children think it’s too traditional to have a metal roof. Thoughts?

I think there are many metal roofs on traditional homes for the simple fact they last forever really and where huge snowfalls are the norm they function great too. Get some samples of choices in the style of the roofing. and the color of course .

Metal roofs were often seen on very traditional homes and in climates with lots of snow. I grew up in Quebec and quiant/traditional always comes to mind.

Metal though is being used on all types of styles and it’s the home itself vs the metal roof that will dictate the overall feel.

If you haven’t already, look into the pro’s and con’s which I think might end up being key in your decision.

I have a metal roof and it has been wonderful. It is the traditional metal roof look - long sheets with a raised divider between each section. This style works great for my mid-century modern home that has a long sloping roof. That's probably the "look" that your family is picturing in their minds, not realizing that today you can get metal roofs with so many different looks that imitate traditional materials. Here's what it says on one website: "innovative panels replicate the look of classic materials like: clay tile, wood shake, and slate, while delivering the unmatched durability and efficiency of metal." There is probably a metal roof product that is very similar to the roofing material your house now has. It is a beautiful home, by the way... 🏡

I think you could be well-pleased with a metal roof but keep in mind several things. One, they are more costly than other materials but they last so much longer. Two, they can retain heat so if you're in a warm/hot location it would be wise to go with a lighter color. Three, not all metal roof installation companies are equal. Please check well into the reputation and the customer satisfaction level of any companies you consider - and perhaps the number of years they have been installing metal roofs. Today it's not unusual for traditional roofing companies to be adding metal roofing services to what they offer but if you can find a company that specializes in metal roofs, and possibly has been doing them for years with good customer satisfaction, that is the company to consider even if they are a bit more expensive. I have had zero issues with my roof which has been in place for 15+ years but my neighbors, who used a different company for their metal roof, have had several issues including periodic leakage.

My metal roof is one of the best 'home upgrade decisions' I have made so it's easy for me to share this advice.

Go online and see the different syles of metal roof . Where I used to live everyone who could afford it had a metal roof regardless of house style one guy even had a spanish style house with a metal rppf thet looked like tile . THis was in a area where we got tones of snow just the right choice for the place .
