Wow! Your grandchildren are very talented. I've never made a gingerbread house, but the mother of one of my friends in high school used to make a beautiful one every year. It was a family tradition. Maybe you've started your granchildren on their own tradition to carry on yours.

Oh my how FABULOUS! With the ability to make the houses you did why were you ever buying those kits!!???? In our stockings we receive a craft of some sort to do on Christmas. Here's ours from a few years ago. All from kits.

The only up side of small is they fit in these cheap bowls for transport home and they were so cute, like a snow globe!!

Each year a friend gives me a tiny gingerbread house inside a large glass hurricane. The house holds a votive and there’s sugar snow etc.

In January I return the jar filled with something— a little plant, citrus, and one year a beta fish.

M K, wow, those look wonderful (tasty, too). I’ve never seen one with ”smoke” coming out of the chimney, great touch. Such sweet photos. :)

My DD was still at home when I met my second husband/her bonus dad. I’d been widowed years before, and the holidays were always so hard without her dad. My now-husband brought a gingerbread house kit over one night early on in our relationship and they worked on it together, just those two. I have pics somewhere — it turned out really cute. There was much laughing and fun while making it. They still talk about it, all these years later.

Those are so cute!! The grandkids in our family decorate them every year after Thanksgiving dinner so they can enjoy them through their Christmas festivities. Grandma or a couple of the older kids assemble all the houses out of graham crackers ahead of time.

We use to do similar with our Grandkids. Amazing the artistic talent in their imagination.

When building this one we set it upon a tray. Tray fit upon the lid of a storage container that, inverted, sheltered the house to display following seasons.

Those are beautiful, and so are the girls! Even the six-year-old’s house looks better than the ones my adult children and I used to make. We did that project on Christmas Eve most years when they were growing up and continued until the last one was out of college. ( I will admit though that as they became adults there may have been spiked eggnog involved.)

What a fun project with your grands, MK. They (and you as the baker) did a great job. We did this a few times over the years with our kids.

Thanks everyone for your kind words and pictures of gingerbread houses. My 6 year old GD amazed me with eveything she thought to do with her house. Hers didn‘t have dormers on it because I failed to make enough side pieces for them. On her own she decided to make a dormer using those square pretzles. She thought of using the peppermint nougats for a chair next to the front door and added a mini marshmallows for a cushion.

Jilly the story about your daughter’s bonus dad and the gingerbread house was so sweet. Fnmroberts, I thought the houses were too big to store. I hadn't thought about storing the houses in upside down storage containers. Maybe I will keep them. I still have my daughter’s first and only “gingerbread house” that she made 34 years ago.

My very first gingerbread creation was a train that I made in back in 1981. It’s hard to see in the picture but the second car has gingerbread reindeer in it and the 3rd car has candies. The railroad ties were chocolate covered wafer cookies and the rails were strings of licorice.

I saved it for a couple years until we had an invasion of mice in our house. I didn't know there was a ”mouse in the house” (more like tons of mice) until I went to put the train away for another year only to see that mice had been feasting on it while it was up on my mantle.
