Add art above the bed?

last modified: 2 months ago

Ive been feeling like the area above my bed feels a bit empty, but clealry the wallpaper makes it so its not empty haha. I was thinking of adding a wide piece of art above the bed.

Or leave it as is? I like my wallpaper, but maybe i wanted to cut through some more of the pattern?

Also Im not liking the light anymore. Ideas?

    Are you open to feedback?

I would not add any art to that wall. You already have a patterened wallpaper, striped bedframe, window pane check rug, and frilly mirrors. I think that is enough.

    , frilly mirrors

    Agree^^^^

So others have jumped in but the room is already too busy. The mirrors and the rug compete with the bedding and the wallpaper. The mirrors should be changed it for something simple. The rug something with more colour but not such a rigid pattern. It is possible the bedding and wallpaper can work together when other things are changed. No pictures over bed needed.

Thank you! What would you do for the rug? I have been so lost and got this inexpensive rug until I find something I like.

Although your mirrors are not to my personal taste, I think they are fun. If you like them, and I assume you do, by all means keep them. That said, I think you have reached the absolute limit of busyness that room can take. My advice is not to add anything new unless you also subtract something.

Having been through a few earthquakes, including the 1994 Northridge quake, I also advise against suspending anything at the head of a bed, or anything over a bed, for safety reasons.

The room looks like a nicely gathered collection. Consider painting the mirror frames a color that blends in with the wallpaper to look more custom.

NO way does that wall need another anything on it. It is so busy already and IMO not in a maximilistic way The mirrors maybe if plain . The bedding lovely the wall paper why, it goes with nothing in the space .Just becuse it is blue does not make it better.

I think it would be busy with wall art.

A hard NO to art, or anything else. As others have said, there are already too many things going on. Bedrooms should be calm, not busy. Seriously consider subtracting something, not adding.

No to anything else on the wall. The paper is very pretty, but is there any possibility it is hung upside down? It doesn't look right to my eye, and that is throwing things off to me. One thing that might help the overall effect is to remove a few items from the tops of the bedside tables, unless they have very special meaning to you and cannot go elsewhere. The red frame, basket, etc. I would like to see another pic without them, and would expect the room to feel a little more serene. What type/color of rug are you looking for? If you do post another photo, maybe remove the rug to see the impact and not have the temp rug influence things. Lovely bed and bedding.

Test things out by taping a rectangular (or whatever shaped) piece of fabric or craft paper above your bed and live with it for a while to help you imagine what might look nice up there -- as in this pic.

Bedrooms should be calm, not busy.

For some people, busy is calming. My husband can only work in loud, busy coffeeshops. My best friend feels most relaxed in her super busy bedroom with the walls covered and busy prints everywhere.

The symmetry of this room feels incredibly calming to me and I'm not someone who likes prints at all.

I would go with a solid blue rug to ground all the patterns. Then use pillows to pull the brown and blue together. On my screen the wallpaper looks brown and blue and the bed looks blue and cream with a burgundy trim. I have attached a link below to some pillows I think will work. You seem to be mixing a few styles, but I think the pillows will pull all of them together.

Now , aren’t you glad you asked? 😂 The room looks great, not too busy for me ( &: I’m more of a minimalist ) but I agree, nothing over the bed. You asked about a rug . I have this one in ”indigo”, subtle striations but looks solid at first glance. It’s available in other colors , sizes also. Room & Board.

I think it would be a mistake to get a rug that too closely matches the blues or other elements in the room. The more you start to make things match, the more your eclectic pieces will start to look like sore thumb mistakes. You have enough diversity of elements in the room now that it looks like a great eclectic balance. Don't upset that apple cart.

@K Laurence - I'm a minimalist too. Isn't it great to be able to appreciate a more maximalist space?

The wall behind bed doesn’t need more but consider a dramatic rug to enhance the eclectic look you’ve got going on.

I really like it just the way it is! No art needed above bed

I'm not sure I'd art, but I get why you feel like something is missing. Since you are already thinking about lighting, perhaps consider replacing the overhead fixture with something that hangs a bit lower to fill in the space? I'd also think about shorter table lamps.

My 2 cents is loose the mirrors. I don’t think they fit with the rest of your room.

Those mirrors are nice but there light colored you could get a fixture to match the mirrors more like something big and white to hang down lower like that person said but if you get them in white fill in this space and bring the bed into it too cuz your choice of your bedding and then it will feel more balanced

@Kendrah …. Yes, even though I prefer modern ( for me) & am somewhat of a minimalist, I can appreciate other styles as well. One of my friend’s home is furnished largely with 18th Century British antiques, very traditional, not really my style but I appreciate the beautiful woods & craftsmanship , I admire them every time I’m in her home. She likes to surround herself with lots of beautiful objects, I’m sure my home feels a little ”cold” to her.

Your bedroom is beautiful. No art above the headboard needed. Yes to changing the rug. That’s it. Keep it simple, keep it beautiful.

No need for artwork above the headboard. You have plenty going on with the wallpaper.
