We recently painted our oak kitchen cabinets white and replaced the brass handles with brushed nickel. Our kitchen appliances are all stainless with black accents (ie the stove top is black). We also had wide-plank dark(er) wood flooring put in the entire downstairs. The kitchen walls are a pale butter, and I have hand-stitched dishtowels for the curtains. I'm now ready to replace the oak/brass ceiling fan above our kitchen table. The table is black Pottery Barn, but it's so dark against the wood that I may replace it with an old farmhouse type of table (lighter wood, white, shabby chic paint, whatever I find). I like the mixed look of retro/industrial items with my shabby chic items. I found a ceiling fan that I LOVE, but not sure whether to go with the brushed nickel blades or the wood blades that appear to match my hardwoods (I have a little fear in buying online, but this looks to be a pretty good match and the floors to have nice variation in tones). My fear in matching it to the hardwoods is that it will clash with a new table if I go with unpainted lighter wood. But I fear that the brushed nickel blades (which I'm sure are just silver paint) will look too cold/industrial. Which fan is best? Sorry...I don't have a pic of the kitchen - can try to add that asap.
