Advice request: Furnishing primary bedroom

Hi all.

I was hoping for some guidance on how to furnish/layout my bedroom. Some background, I finished building the house a few months ago, and we're still getting settled in/saving to furnish. I think I am ready to buy some more furniture for the bedroom. I am including some photos and the room dimensions (in feet, in meters it measures 4.2x8.22 meters).

What I have so far: pretty much only the bed, not even a headboard. My mom gave us an old couch but I would need to replace it. Have some laundry baskets in the bottom left corner, and dog beds against the couch.

What I want: sitting area by the big windows, with at least two big chairs, or a chair a loveseat, or some similar combo. Dog beds for two big dogs. some storage (night stands, dresser maybe?).

I think the bed should probably stay where it is but still open to suggestions. Appreciate any advice!

I think we need a bit more info. I see avery large bedroom is that only used as a bedroom ? You say you built a house so what other rooms are ther e? Who shares this space other than the dogs ?

I wouldn't do a loveseat, two swivel chairs and an ottoman. I would get two area rugs, one for under the bed and the other to define the seating area. The bed is good there, but could go in the opposite wall as well. Will you be including a TV?

Night stands with drawers to stash junk. large enough to hold a table lamp + (This example isn't big enough, you have plenty of room for something bigger)

light colored drapery panels AND blinds hung high on the wall and beyond the window(s)

you can be creative with your lounging area, love your windows.

I would probably never close those drapes with thta view. This is a site best used when we ask and you tell and you ask and we tell . Every bit of info you provide ia bonus to help you .

I might be blind, can't read the feet/inches. Beside the point as I DON'T understand why there would be a need for " laundry baskets in the corner" in a new build, and especially one with a fairly gigantic bedroom.. That's something we do in a college dorm. Is the house JUST a bedroom, kitchen and bath ? Show the rest?

Where is the closet? What of the window treatments suggesting you need darkness to sleep?! To me, that means you consider privacy and light control SEPARATELY....and avoid a wall of drapery needing to be closed and the MILES of fabric needed to make those look good.

Where is the house? Australia? Canada? Great Britain? Other?

Just when you think you've seen all the ways a new poster could be insulted, without fail, someone steps up to the plate and lobs a new one.

Those windows/view = gorgeous! I like the idea of swivel chairs for reading or enjoying the view, but I would want at least one piece of furniture in that corner where I could lounge and stretch out and gaze out the window. So a chaise or comfy bench or even two in an L shape with the chairs placed to face them and some kind of table between them for games or drinks, snacks, foot rest. Like a large round or square ottoman, maybe like the one Beverly posted. I'd put the dog beds in the area behind the door if they would fit. so they aren't as visible when the door is open (assuming the door would be closed a lot of the time).

You could even have built in storage below, if needed to eliminate the basket/bins.

@Olychick thank you for the pictures and ideas. I love a window seat and storage is always a plus. Also like tucking away the dog beds, would ideally not like to see them at all but alas the pups have gotten used to sleeping in the bedroom with us.

@Jan Moyer. Thank you for the response. If you tap on the layout photo and zoom the measurements should be a bit clearer. I mentioned above, the only thing I think should stay put is the bed, so open to suggestions on moving anything, including laundry baskets, they're just convenient where they are right now.

The house is a 3 bed, 2.5 bath, plus a den and a kitchen/living area and a porch.

As for the window treatments, privacy is not an issue, we face a river so there are no neighbors that side. We keep the curtains closed at night because that corner of the house faces east so the light blares in in the morning. It is located in Costa Rica so we get bright morning sun all year round.

@Patricia Cowell Consulting Thank you for the comment and guidance. I am in love with the view, once I am awake those drapes stay open for sure.

@Lyn Nielson Thank you for the ideas and pictures, love them. Love big nightstands, I need a good junk drawer. Rugs to define the areas is a great idea too.

We are on the fence about a TV, probably for now we will not have one in the bedroom. Thanks again

@BeverlyFLADeziner thank you for the idea. I love the little layout, something like that was my original thought. I'll be honest I don't use the seating all the time but I am an avid reader and it has become my reading spot/ morning coffee spot/evening wine spot on the weekends. Thanks again

@Patricia, missed your other comment. This bedroom is only used as a bedroom, by myself and my partner.

The house has 3 bedrooms (the other 2 are smaller but still good sized). We have 2.5 bathrooms. Then there is a large open floor plan kitchen/ living room, a porch and a small den by the other 2 bedrooms.

We are just us two plus dogs, no kids, so one of the other bedrooms is my office, the other is a guestroom.

    Thank you for your questions!

Some pictures of the main living area. Everything is pretty bare bones right now as we were building without taking out any loans so by then we were scraping pennies.

I forgot to mention we also have a laundry room, a large pantry and a walk in closet off the main bedroom.

I love dogs and nice dog beds are okay in my bedroom. How about some morized black out blinds that you can even put on a timer so no need for those drapes at all and if you love drapes they need to be alot fuller like 2.5 to 3x the width of the rod. I think 2 chairs are nicer tan a love seat for thta spot for sure . I dislike TV in bedrooms so no problem there . The laundry baskets at best belong in the bathroom or walkin closet . I d not see a closet . I like the bed there and aslo the larger night tables with some nice sized lamps. A headboard IMO is a must it just sort of finishes the bed. Then some awesome bedding that you both love . I do not think big rugs are needed mostly hiding under the bed but I do like a nice fluffy one on either side for my feet when I get up. Maybe a nice smaller area rug where you have the chairs . Maybe post a couple of pics of styles you like that could help us .I just saw the pics of the house interiors that helps and also the info..Is the LR a space you love as it is or are you still finding your style? Just went to your idea books lots of ideas there . So now that helps me to show you some ways I would do the space .

Love the idea of the swivel chairs and ottoman by the window - would be such a treat to have coffee there, an evening drink, read etc - amazing windows and views!

totally get the need for light control - I feel like the dark curtains bring the room down a bit and I’d want something lighter/floatier like @Lyn Nielson suggested - and then would use blackout blinds for light control

wouldn’t worry too much about the dog beds - you could always find nice washable matching throws to use on them down the road ❤️

    That explains the LUSH greenery!

You've got a lot of wood, leather........some rugs in a pattern forgiving to the pups would be great in the living room. I'm pretty sure mud can get to be a problem in C.R? Torrential afternoon rain? following a full sun morning?

Post some inspo pictures of rooms you love. Not just the bedroom......living spaces as well.

As to the bedroom? I'd face two super comfy chairs to the VIEW. Big round pouf ottoman to share, can be had VERY inexpensively,, and a nice generous round table between for the coffee.

As to rug? "anchor" the bed and seating.in complementary colors.....

Pups? I'll leave to you, but they usually like a back to something sold, and a watch on the door: )

As you can see,...I'm still a bit no on the laundry baskets, up to you on that, lol

I don't think any couch is necessary, especially with just two of you.

Think carefully about lamps. A floor lamp or table lamp in that main corner would be nice at night. So swivel chairs might make more sense.

There are good looking swivel recliners in case you want the best of both worlds (ottoman/footstool when oriented towards the room and use the recliner option when you swivel toward the view)…. https://www.roomandboard.com/catalog/living/recliners/arlo-leather-recliners

If you like to read, then a chaise or recliner in that corner would be a good addition. A recliner that looks elegant is t hard to find these days.

Thank you all for the responses. I am adding some pictures of styles I like since a couple of people requested it, (maybe eclectic/cottage/rustic/transitional?), still figuring it out clearly. Someone asked if I love the LR as is, answer is no, I think it is also very unfinished now, like the bedroom.

Thank you for the pictures and suggestions on chairs/chaises (most of my reading eventually turns into napping so this might be practical lol)/recliners, I like a lot of them, love the idea of something cozy and comfy, will start looking into options locally.

Also someone mentioned a lamp in the corner, I love that Idea, and have an outlet there so it's perfect.

I definitely need rugs throughout the house, Love patterned rugs; I only have one rug in the kitchen, but yes looking for some options that are pup friendly, like Jan said we have rain half the year so mud can be an issue.

The laundry baskets will eventually go elsewhere, probably the bathroom and closet, just there for now for convenience.

Also, I think you've all convinced me on blinds, will need to look into options here, the windows are really big, which I love, but it does make the dark curtains take over the room there.

And thank you for the kind comments on the view, adding a picture from the perspective of the porch which faces the same direction; the view is why we built the house how we built it, most windows face that greenery which we love.

    Thank you again.

Not knowing what the exterior is like, so don’t know if this could work, but think anout motorized remote controlled exterior shades. They are completely out of the way in the daytime and can be as opaque as needed for light control.

Lutron showed a smart blind at CES that opens etc based on time and other factors. This could work for those east windows. IKEA has announced a store for Costa Rico.

I think Beverly's layout is perfect! The idea of swivel recliners might solve some of your issues. Facing the view when you want to and being able to have the light from the windows behind you when you're reading. If motorized blinds are beyond your budget, I had custom solar shades made for my 6 foot windows very reasonably. They're cordless and go up and down very easily. I added sheer panels for softness to keep it light and airy. Your views are exquisite by the way!
