advice for styling a bathroom corner

last month
last modified: last month

Recently moved in and would love some advice for styling one corner in this bathroom. It feels like it’s missing something. The bathroom appears to be relatively new and we think it’s appealing overall.

What we will do now:
-paint, probably in BM Palladian Blue, a blue-green.

- Install an RH train rack, in place of the upper storage cabinet. It’s a train rack I’ve had for years. It’s gorgeous and I’ve never hung it and now I have the space to do it.

The upper storage cabinet is mostly empty because we have the storage we need under the sinks. Plus, I prefer not to have the all-matching look of the mirror, sink unit, and this cabinet. The other spot for the train rack would be where the two towel hooks are, but it would *just* fit in that space (dimension wise) and may feel a little tight. I do not like the hardware style of those two towel hooks and could lose them altogether because there is a towel bar elsewhere and we’d have the train rack when needed. (Bathroom is mainly used by DC and given over to rare overnight guests.) We could put a black and white Eiffel Tower photo there.

I would love advice on placement of the train rack as well as any advice for how to fill the corner. I put a snake plant there for now for some texture. The bathroom has no windows so I was looking for a plant that wouldn’t need natural light. I would like to elevate it somehow, maybe by putting it on a garden stool. I wasn’t sure if a tall plant would overwhelm the space.

I’m also planning on a new light above the sink. Overall, the 48-inch sink top is maybe a bit too small to consider doing double light fixtures over each sink? So I’d stick with one light with a little more style or historic flair—perhaps a fixture with three lights. Any advice appreciated for the light too.

(Later on, I’ll update the mirror and the faucet hardware, to the older-style cross handles which we had in our last place, as well the adjacent towel hardware to all match.)

Thanks!

I apologize if this sounds smart-alecky. It's meant to be helpful. In your place, I'd put one of these (link) in the corner. I think it's more practical than a plant.

have one of those hidden on the side of the sink.

I'd reach for a can of paint to improve this room. I'd match the gray veining in the marble top.

Also I suspect the lighting could be improved.

The light above the sinks is out so it’s a bit darker than usual in here, but as I said, I do want to improve that lighting. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. My plan was to paint this a light blue or blue-green. You can see the swatch I have on the wall. Definitely will paint the whole room. I’m sure it was just a painted white for staging and selling.

This is an older house? just guessing by the space-pac ac in the ceiling?

I don't think a blue green is the right direction

I"m aware that these illustrations are wallpaper but it's the easiest way to get the color on your walls so you can see the end result.

@Amy K, sorry my advice was so pointless! Good to know you've got the equipment for whenever you may need it. I hope you get what you need from the others here. Sadly, I don't have any good ideas for the specifics you asked for.

Bpath, this is a 100-year-old rowhouse, hence the no windows

Thank you for the swatches, Beverly. Yeah that blue- green looks pretty terrible! So far Palladian Blue is much lighter and more forgiving. Another bathroom in the house with the same countertop and cabinet is painted in the lightest gray, which is elegant and one of the best grays I’ve ever seen, but I just wouldn’t repeat it here. I would stay with either a light blue-gray or this blue-green tone. I’m afraid going with a dark shade would make it feel boxed in. Plus it’s a tween bathroom, so leaning into keeping it light and seaside-ish.

Is the corner you are asking about, the corner where we see the mother in law’s tongue plant? That’s a tiny space not worth worrying about, IMO.

It would be helpful to see the train rack you mention to help us judge its placement. By the way, aren’t there two other walls in this room that we can’t see?

Little bug, you’ve got the whole room. And I’m recruited to Sea Salt, Dani! I’ve heard of it and definitely will sample. These bathrooms are breathtaking!

Amy - SO HAPPY that you like Sea Salt! I LOVE SW Sea Salt with marble + with white tile.

I kind of forgot that your vanity appears to be black (?) - and I didn't look for any photos of Sea Salt with a black vanity.

Here is Sea Salt with a vanity that was painted SW Peppercorn. There is a lot of light from the window = the Sea Salt looks lighter (and much more blue) than in other photos.

I think that you are planning on removing the mirror in the black frame + the black storage over the toilet? It seems like Sea Salt would still work - it's used as a neutral paint color often (even for a whole house paint color - although some people lighten it a little when using it all over their home).

If you don't like it with the vanity - you can always paint your vanity white (or another color that you like better with Sea Salt).

I just realized that I became so focused on SW Sea Salt that I completely forgot the questions in your post!

I love plants - would def try a snake plant raised up on something in the corner - if you are moving the towels.

I typically see train racks installed over toilets (always in hotels). I'm not sure where else I would install it.

The color of the sink cabinet and mirror is royal navy. It’s quite nice as a color, just don’t need all the matching in the small space, I think if I were to paint it, I’d like it darker with hale navy, a BM color I’m dying to try somewhere.

Seems like you're leaning more towards the sea salt, but just in case.... be very careful with BM Palladian Blue. Looks very pretty on the swatch, and is nice color, but it runs the risk of looking exactly like toothpaste on the walls. Seriously.

Also, just curious, do you plan on centering the train nrack over the toilt itself, or centering it in the wall space?

I do have it in spots on the walls already and I like it but you all are making reconsider because, yes, it is now giving toothpaste and I can’t unsee it. I would put the train rack where the cabinet is. Do you think it should be centered on the wall?

The towels are way to far from the shower and never beside a toilet I do not like the dark oppressive cabinet above the toilet either maybe just a nicepiece of art on that wall
