Need help laying out combined living/dining room

last month

Greetings! I'm looking for recommendations on how to best lay out this room - wanting it to function as a sort of combined living/dining room (the kitchen is a bit too small to fit a table comfortably, so wanting to put a small table in the living room more or less). Right now the couch and TV are in the basement, but looking to move up here. We've been in the process of reorganizing other areas of the house as well, so furniture is more or less everywhere, and I wanted to make this room relatively empty to plan things out easier. Ideally the place needs to seat two people minimum, but I'd like to comfortably stretch to 3-4 total. I really appreciate any advice, or if anybody has any similar layouts we would love to see to get some ideas! Also looking to purchase new furniture most likely so if anyone has recommendations I'd be open to hear as well.

without a lot of thought, I would put the dining table where the piano is now, the piano on the wall where the floor lamp is, and the TV mounted on the wall

where the coat tree/bench is now. Remove the drapery panels from the bay window and replace with inset window coverings, like roman blinds, or shades.

Move the coat rack to next to the door. Add a large area rug and place your sofa in front of the bay window (style the bay countertop with table lamps etc.)

and create a floating seating area with swivels chairs facing the TV. coffee table in the center.

Is the piano staying in the room as well? If so, you're going to have a hard time accommodating both a living and dining area.

That space has to do a lot since it is the entry , DR and LR and piano room.It looks like you have a coat closet so get rid of the rack and start taking stuff to bedrooms not usung that space for boots etc. How mant seats do you need in the spac for seating and dining . I do not think you have space for dining in the kitchen except for maybe a tiny table and 2 small chairs . The oiano is electric so can go anywhere , a sofa under the bay window is logical but maybe a drop leaf table there with the ability to be pulled out whan needed and spme stacking chairs in a clset somehwer . The taht small table for dailiy use in the kitchen . But we need more info pleas e It looks like the table you have is a drop leaf so try it out where the bay window is maybe with 2 chairs . Then a sofa on the piano wall with 2 smaller scaled chairs in the open space facing the sofa and then the piano on the wall where the floor lamp is centered .

Mae it would be helpful if you posted a plan with dimensions. I don’t see the math working for what you are showing. Maybe the shelving wall by the dining should be a banquet seat up against the wall in order for the math to work.

I am all ABOUT dimensions : In rooms like this? You essentially have a "bowling alley", and the first thing you do is accept that you will need to walk THROUGH seating, or you double worsen the ALLEY, . reducing this to 9 feet by....26' ?? No that! : (

Start with a rug you love, one with enough forgiving pattern that doesn't give you heart palpitation to tread upon! Washable,...( Ruggable)

USE the space, don't make "paths" to chop the space.

" I'd like to be able to FEED another couple, despite "it's just two of us"?

You can!, and four fit with comfort

What good is a room without a comfy couch, chairs for after dinner dinner and some music, some soft lamplight......, a place to plop a foot while watching tv .

And life has to happen, so that ENTRY at the door? ( i butted 3 20" wide

Pick a RUG ....10 x 14 and begin your "you" whatever it shall be.........

And it all FITS. . TV is easy to turn to art.over piano : ) Even You Tube

No on the left............USE the space, just walk on through !! Trust me, you fit.

There's a full 36" between the piano seat and cocktail ottoman , You don't go in and out a hundred times a day lol

Another rendition for your consideration. A couch without the chaise and two floor lamps like the one you already have. Also a blank with the measurements from the floor plan/blue print that you posted. Have a great day. Best wishes to you and yours.

Wow thank you guys for all the recommendations so far! Yeah still planning things out - may even move the piano down to the basement or in a different room if this all doesn't fit right as well.

    Hello Nate,

We wanted to give the measurements of the main pieces of furniture. That will help and so will a tape measure.

    1. One small expandable table that can seat four to eight people. This is only a suggestion. Of one like it. Link: https://www.amazon.com/AYEASY-Extendable-Expandable-Restaurant-Conference/dp/B0FWJZZV59/ref=sr_1_7?crid=19B2JDD7ZQFYB&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.vvptdH8GyL5JFxinodWIbpdi7QN6_De3e5hc71lPXW2ymTSwNh5PT94b2BIP8B_FU0FW

    2. Billy bookcases from IKEA. They are only 11" deep can have doors or open shelving. up to you. But we have them in our library and have been happy with them for many years. https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/billy-bookcase-black-oak-effect-40477340/

    3. Couch: Seats up 4 people. It is 7' 11" wide. It comes in many colors. This is just an example. I always suggest that you find a local store to buy your couches and chairs. It is so important to be able to see the pieces as well as sit in them to see if they are comfortable for you and anyone else in your family. This is the 91" Cantata sofa. https://foter.com/products/cantata-standard-3-piece-living-room-set

    4. The area rug is 10' x 12' from Rugs USA. https://www.rugsusa.com/collections/area-rugs?color=ivories

Happy furniture hunting and remember to take the tape measure along with you. :-)

Best wishes from MAE Day Designs.

It would be sad to see the piano in the basement. It is such a wonderful piece to have in the room with the other instrument (cello ?). There for all to hear and enjoy.
