Replacing original windows

I am looking to replace the ori 100 year old wood windows in my house and am torn on design style. Originally I was set in replacing them with identical style windows (true wood muntins). They are beautiful but difficult to clean. I am now considering other options : removable grids, grids between glass panes, no grids. I am also considering doing muntins in the front of the house and clear open window panes in the back where the view and light come from. i would appreciate any insight. Trying not to ruin the trad style of the home.

It’s personal but i’d vote for SDL’s on the whole home - we live in a historic neighborhood and a house on my dogwalk replaced their windows with new ones without grids and they give the facade a weirdly flat look that doesn’t seem to jibe with the architecture, totally just my opinion

I do not love grids at all but IMO rmovaeable ones can be the perfect answer it gives you a choice . I do however like the same windows everywhere . That front for sure needs serious landscaping work and a wider walkways too.This was our 1905 house that had all grids and wechose no grids and did not think it ruined the style of the house at all but sure made my life easier since all those windows tilted in to clean too

I would do the divided lites on the fron in the same pattern you have now as they suit the house. Leaving the rear and sides one lite is perfectly acceptable. I would also use the same double hung and fixed/picture window combo you have now. Get a quality product and your house will continue to look and perform good. Why exactly do they need replacing? You will never get another window to last 100 years and if not to far gone the current "may" be suitable for a rebuild.

@millworkman thabk you for the comment. i have looked into salvaging these windows but some are too far gone. currently my top choices are anderson woodwright with colonial grilles vs marvin elevate. i act think the anderson is more visually appealing.

The house might look quite bare without grids, though the true divided are a cleaning nightmare.

Have you looked into the fiberglass replacement windows?

The front landscaping needs a new plan and the wider walk recommended above. Red brick to go with the chimney would be a nice touch.

I'd replace the front for sure with the same window layout and look as the originals. Incredible that they have lasted so long.

While it seams reasonable to forgo all the grids in the back of the house, that fireplace room looks pretty special with them. I think it would be sad to see them go.
