Green backsplash tile choices

Good morning. I'm continuing to select finishes for my kitchen remodel, which will be shaker cabinets painted in SW Clary Sage, with Roca black hex tiles for the floor and soapstone counters. I'm going for the classic green bungalow look, and am going to try to have a wood window for my kitchen window.

I had originally been thinking white/neutral tiles for the backsplash, but I am now leaning towards green, and because I live in the vicinity of Heath ceramics (and their seconds shed), I am looking at their green tiles as primary options. Obviously with the seconds shed I'm dependent on inventory, but let's set that aside for now.

In heath tiles, I love the color of KPFA green, but I am thinking it leans a little too blue/aqua for the classic bungalow look. Geyser green seems much closer, although it's a little darker/browner in some places than what I was striving for. Then again, maybe that is exactly what would get me closer to the bungalow look I want.

I also looked at Ogawa green and Serpentine, as well as Patina manganese, but these looked a little too light to my eye.

I appreciate feedback on this and whether I'm in the right neighborhood VS. about to go down a terrible path. Thank you!!

Is Dover White the wall colour? The green tiles are so pretty but it might he too much green to be honest

Fine to do your research now and collect samples, but do NOT buy the tiles before your kitchen is finished and with functioning lights, so you can really see what the tiles will look like in your space.

Tiles always look different when they are on a wall and under the shadow of the upper cabinets.

It took me 5 months after we moved into our new build to find my backsplash tiles for the kitchen. When they arrived my GC sent the tile guy back to complete the 2 day job.

Thank you WC Hopeful. Yes, Dover white is a potential wall color (haven't decided for now but it was a sample I had to give an idea). Thank you for the warning about too much green. I am going for an old bungalow type look and thought the green tile might help, but I am worried with Geyser green about it being too dark. But I'm not sure!

Chispa, thank you for that suggestion to wait before purchasing - good though! My only concern is if I'm hoping to use the heath tile shed I might need to be planning ahead. When you waited 5 months, were you worried about the splatters and stuff from not having a backsplash? Or did it not matter because you knew you were going to tile over it?

Agree -- wait until everything is in before deciding. Things can look different once installed; choices that look good together as samples sometimes don't come together well when considering the completed whole, and light bouncing off fixed elements can really change how things look once installed.

Of your samples, I will say the darkest is too dark against your counter choice. The second one up from the bottom (just above the darkest) is the wrong tone with your cabinets. Be careful of the middle one (fourth one), it might end up looking minty (not in a good way). Third from the top looks grey on my monitor, if it's a green-grey IRL it might end up fighting with the gray tones in your counter. There's something I just don't like about the top (lightest) one but I can't specify what. The second one from the top is a nice match with your cabinets. But refer back to my first paragraph re: WAIT.

Are you married to Heath? If not, check out Pratt & Larson and Fireclay. Both companies have beautiful selections. Fireclay is a breeze to order samples from.

in the column of 7 ]last image] I prefer the 2nd from top. its the only one that works with everything and isnt too cool. [warm hdwe ....gotta work w that] Its a winner but if you can wait it might help you decide. Bungalows can have pattern and color so dont rule out a multi colored traditional tile. everything you have so far is quite subdued.

not to drive home the point but this is a bungalow kitchen..keep an open mind, and maybe browse a little more.

I wasn't worried about the walls at all! Also I had used BM Aura paint in matte and it cleans up pretty well. It is all going to get covered up by tile, so why would it even be a concern, but I'm not an aggressive/messy cook either!

My eye keeps going right to the wall and tha very wrong grren for your plan so hard to advise IMO you always narrow choices to 3 then it makes sense but I aslo agree to wait until the rest is done and thta includes the wall color which BTW on my monitor is pink

Thank you Porkchop - appreciate your feedback! I am, indeed, leaning towards waiting, now. The second from the top that you identified - I think it's very beautiful but my worry is that it is TOO close a match to the cabinets? I thought I might need to go a little darker/deeper (but ideally staying with a similar undertone)? That one you mentioned is Ogawa green from Heath. I do like it, but I'm worried it would lead my kitchen to seem slightly too matchy-matchy and/or washed out? But I am not sure and find myself bouncing back and forth between ideas rather than settling on clarity. Sigh.

And, no, I am not married to Heath! But, it's a little spendy so I was happily planning to stalk their seconds shed where it is much more affordable. The challenge with Fireclay & Pratt & Larson is they don't have that option.

HerbFlavor, thank you! You identified Ogawa green, the same one that Porkchop identified. I do think it's beautiful but I am concerned (as I just shared with PC) that it is a little too light and a little too matchy matchy with my cabs. Maybe I'm overthinking it, I'm not sure. But my instincts (flawed though they might be) were drawing me to a more pigmented option.

I agree bungalows can take more color and more pattern...although I'm personally not drawn to a hugely busy vibe. I was going more for layered colors than for layered patterns - I am still in pattern matching 101, haven't moved on to advanced pattern matching yet! :)

Chispa, thanks! I find when cooking, that my food tends to splatter and drips migrate around, but I am glad for you that doesn't happen to you!

Hi Patricia C., thanks! That is amazing to me that the yellow wall color is reading as pink on your monitor. A good reminder to me that digital images can be extremely misleading. Good idea to narrow to 3, appreciate it.

I had chatGPT mock up an AI version of what we have in mind. Obviously that approach has its pitfalls but I do like the darker green.

ChatGPT always makes things look like they are illuminated by ethereal lighting! Nothing like in real life.

I had a similar green tile in my previous kitchen, before I remodeled, and it mostly looked like a black hole, and that kitchen had plenty of light in sunny LA. My counter was dark too.

Reading from the top of the stack down (in your bottom picture), what about a blend of numbers 2, 4, 5, and 7?

I'm counting on anyone here with more experience to shout this idea down if it's truly terrible. (Please be kind and don't shout at me, though.) I think it might be worth trying on for size.

    Very cool looking kitchen!

    1. I firmly believe that layout matters when you are selecting colors. How large and open is the space? How many windows and where? What portion has uppers and lowers? How much counterspace, how much of the counter color will we see? This matters because each of these answers impacts how much of what colors will be surrounding the tile. If you are brave, post your layout here, but realize it will open a can of worms with unsolicited opinions you may not care about.

    2. Never, ever count on an AI image to give an accurate idea of how to select colors. The light that AI throws into an image is like fairy dust. It can make anything look wonderful. It is a mistake to count on it.

    3. We do not have a backsplash and are messy cooks and I have never had a problem wiping splatters and drips off the backsplash area. (Even if it has sat there for days!) Paint is a durable backsplash surface. We once had it for 6 months while waiting to decide on backsplash and decided we lived not having one. We have not had one for 12 years. You will be fine for a handful of months. :)

    4. I'm curious if your dark floors, dark counter, and dark backsplash will read as a bit odd with a strip of lighter cabinet color in between. The cabinets have the most visual bulk or visual heft, but would be the lightest color. Not wrong, just something to think about.

    5. My best friend's dream is to go to the discount shed at Heath. She grew up near Heath and it is in her blood. Alas, we live on the East Coast. She visited me in NYC this weekend and we spent two hours at Fireclay. She walked away with tile she adores. She texted me today and said she feels like her dreams have come true. She is using the same colors in her kitchen as you have in yours.

    5. How many sq ft of tiles do you need and is it common to find that many in the shed? I know little about it.

Mostly unrelated, but I love your color choices and they remind me of elements of these beautiful kitchens.

Hi Amy - thank you - this is an interesting idea that I had also been mulling over! I am worried it is an advanced approach that would be risky for me to pull off as an amateur, but I'm going to mull it over more because it does seem like it would help lighten the darkness of geyser green without the risk of being washed out or too matchy-matchy with my cabs.

Hi Kendrah, thanks! I appreciate all your helpful responses!

Ok, I'm taking a deep breath and posting the layout and elevations, but - general request - I'm hoping folks won't focus their feedback because the layout is basically locked. Cab order placed, plans submitted for permits. But I take Kendrah's point that feedback about my specific question may depend on the details here.

    Overall layout:

And elevations for each of the three main walls (not the dining area on the lower side because we're just going to put table/chairs there).

Kendrah, to some of your other comments/questions!

#4 - re: light strip of cabinets between darker floor & counter & possible backsplash. Ok, now I'm a little nervous, but I'm basically stuck on the cab color & the floor color. However, I can still change counter IF needed, as well as (obviously) backsplash. But, I do love the soapstone + sage cabinet look so I am probably not going to change the counter (unless I get strong feedback on that) but I could definitely change the backsplash.

For #5 & 6 - how funny that your best friend loves heath! I am glad she found an option that she loves. I just went to the heath shed for the first time this weekend, and it was good to see it in person - it was very quiet (not a mobscene), which was a relief. And it was very well organized - they do seem to make an attempt to group the same colors together (it's not a perfect system, obviously, but they are mostly grouped). And not too much to go through, I was worried it would take hours but really within 10 or so minutes you could have gone through on a first pass to see what's there, and then you can go back and see the ones you are most interested in.

In terms of volume, I need (I think) about 50-60 sq ft of backsplash, and it seemed like there were definitely a few tiles where I could have gotten what I needed in one visit. However, I might have needed to compromise on tile size/shape, for example. But I am thinking for myself, I am planning on trying to gather the materials over a few different visits, OR supplement with in-stock, full-price tile if I'm a box or two short. But, I'm still so early in the process that it remains to be seen!

And, thank you so much for your kind comments on the color choices :) It's super nerve-wracking but nice to get positive feedback to help partially allay my fears. Thank you!

@eam44 posted a picture that shows one way of doing a blend.

I'll attach some pix of my primary bath, which show another way.

I completely understand your concerns about nailing the layout without professional help. I did have professional help, and it was invaluable.

EAM44 - thanks for your comment! I think I might recognize that kitchen from Remodelista, which if so, that is actually the same post that brought the seconds shed to my awareness in the first place! I think that kitchen is really beautiful and yes, while I'm not looking for blue per se, I love the idea of variability and I am good with imperfection! I'm hoping the stars will align for me to get the right color / size / shape for me over the course of a few visits.

Hoe about something like this where you mix the tones of green then chances are one will match the cabinets and it will look purposful same counter even hex floors just not black

The 5th photo more accurately depicts the wall color. Agree with others to wait. I really like you’ve selected so far ( cabinets & countertop ).

If interested, this combo feels “classic green bungalow”.

    Your flooring I believe.
