Ceilings are low, so I would keep it simple with 4" recessed lights placed in appropriate locations.

If you don't have the money or time to take on the project of recessed lighting throughout, then yes you want a flushmount. It is impossible to suggest one without seeing what the rest of your kitchen looks like. I wouldn't get something extremely simple that is not too decorative nor draws too much attention to itself.

So, what I suggested wasn’t ‘coastal’ necessarily- based on the fact that the lights don’t position themselves in any architectural manner (like centered in an entry or over a table, etc) makes me suggest something that doesn’t shout out as a design statement.

Can lights throughout will be your best bet. You can have decor to match the modern/coastal theme you want.

First those boxes get removed then you have the ceiling patched then add what ever lights you like . These will always look to be exactly what they are outdated boxes for crappy old school tubes for lighting .
