Converting Home Office to Master Bedroom

last month
last modified: last month

I am interested in converting my husbands home office to our Primary Bedroom. It backs up to my current office which I hope to convert to a large primary bath connected to the proposed primary bedroom. Yes I have other spots for our offices :)

These are both very large rooms (his office- 26X13; my office 16x13) Our current primary "suite" is small, dark and the en suite is circa 1970. I am incorporating a large closet (6X5) in the new primary bathroom design but it will house our sauna cedar box that we use daily. I am struggling to incorporate good size closets into the new bedroom in my design. All I can think of that will work is his/hers reach-ins/ thinking of using PAX ikea hoping to achieve a built in look. These ideas are marked in grey on left and right of floorplan. Pic of space too. I'd love other ideas.

The proposed appears to be just a refurnishing symmetrically about a window. If you actually would like to remodel the bedroom to match the ensuite permanently, all the rooms should flow together (bedroom, closet, bath, hallway/adjacent rooms), and be proportional in space to the concept of the house. For a good layout, the ceiling changes in plane would also need to be shown.

The plan has no context we need to see the original plan with the 2 offices and some clue where this is in the home . Then a foor plan to scale of those spaces and where the plumbing is in the home and how you will get it to where you want it.The plan you show with the bed there has virtually used up all the space and still no bathroom to be seen . I agree the ceiling is an aissue too Just way to little info I assume an upper floor so whaere are the stairs to get here . If you want help here we need that to scale plan of how the spaces are now

I have uploaded a more complete plan...this is on the upper floor above a new garage. the staircase pictured is one of two that go to second floor. The storage area needs to stay as is.

Are those windows large enough for egress? They do not appear so...........................

@millworkman yes they all are. Rough Opening in the picture is 2'-8-1/2" X 4'-8-1/4" and my current office proposed primary bath is RO Dim 2'-6-1/2" X 4'-4-1/4"

It sounds like the sauna will be in the existing Storage and you don't intend to change anything about that space? Does the sauna footprint take up less than the Storage space? Wouldn't it be better to have it accessed from the Master Bath?

It will be difficult to provide a Closet that is on par with the level of bedroom and bathroom if the bedroom stays intact at 26' across - there is so much wasted, unusable space that doesn't make for a cozy Master retreat. Settling for PAX wardrobes is not equivalent to the amenities and work you are doing. But, the ceiling and symmetry is very dominant and an impediment to opportunities.

It is possible to make the cathedral less-large looking with a faux cathedral, which would bring the 26' bedroom width down to appropriate scale, better proportionally with the 13' depth, and maybe give some room for a walk-in closet.

The sauna will be in a walk in closet that will be part of the new master bathroom not in the storage area. The storage area will remain as is and is space that cannot be used for closet space. The space is large and I do think it could make a nice master but it’s new construction and I prefer not to modify it too much - ceiling etc.
I know what you’re saying about the pax wardrobes which is why I wanted to achieve a more built in look. But looking for other ideas!

Yes! This is what I was thinking. Maybe even something along window wall that turns corner w drawers

Do you need two bathroom entrances? I would close off the hall entrance and turn that corner into a toilet water closet room.

Thanks! This is my bathroom plan and I would be closing off hallway access to primary bath.

Open to suggestions for improvement on this too!

Do you already have a contractor in mind? If not,I would look for a good design build firm and let the help guide your design process.

It is great that you are blessed with a large house. I would never put a MBR on any floor but main floor - think about getting older, or having any kind of surgery on leg or foot.. . . MBR should always be on main floor.

Looks like you have good boiler heat instead of horrid forced-air.

Avoid black and grey - only idiots ever bought into using horrid colors like black and grey in a house. Also avoid off-gassing items like carpet and particle board cabinets. Avoid plastic fake wood floors.

    " Rough Opening in the picture is 2'-8-1/2" X 4'-8-1/4" "

That is not large enough for egress in the US.

Code: though specific local codes can vary, often requiring larger overall sizes like 3'x5' to achieve the net opening.

    Whole page link.

Your sauna is too small to actually function as a sauna. Boxes that small have too uneven of heat and steam, too much radiant, and poor air quality.

You seem to enjoy it as is which is good. But while doing this remodel you may want to consider a real sauna which would be much more enjoyable and I believe fit well in the closet space.

Oh thank you. Ours is freestanding and we love it.

If you enjoy it then go for it. Just keep in mind that it's not a sauna in any way and does not deliver the health benefits they claim.

Ok thanks! The point of my post was to ascertain some ideas about closets for my master bedroom and feedback on my master bath plan.
