Range Hood Suggestions

Hello, need some input. We need this microwave removed as it’s no longer working and although we need a kitchen remodel we may move in a few months so we can’t commit to that just yet. In the interim which range hood is preferable, under cabinet or remove the top cabinets and get chimney style? I’m open to any suggestions, but microwave must go as it’s not working and we can’t do this style any longer due to lifting restrictions

Everything in that image is builder grade basic - that’s not a criticism. It means that an under cabinet hood will fit in better with what you’ve got than a chimney style hood. It’ll also be more affordable, and when you inevitably redo the kitchen, you’ll be selling (on Craig’s List?) a $300 temporary piece instead of a pricier metal beast. It’ll also be less work to install.

Do you know whether you have exterior venting?

We do have exterior venting as the microwave plugs in up top and vents out

If you may move in a few months, I wouldn’t spend any money on it. Leave things as they are. At most find a used replacement for the existing microwave-hood. Why would it make sense to plonk down even $3,000 to enjoy it for a few months?

I'd consider the OTR microwave to be an asset and would want one whether I were buying a house or living in one. The CR-recommended LG MVEL2033F is only $329. Don't want to spend that much? You can pick up the GE JVM3160RFSS at Best Buy for $230.

Want an oven to last longer? Don't open the door while it's running; pause or stop the oven before opening the door.

If you may be moving just get another OTR microwave that exhausts to the exterior.

That looks like an older GE microwave oven. Find the installation instructions for that model and review the top and rear templates, and the rear bracket. Compare the templates and bracket to those of the GE JVM3160RFSS. If they're the same, you won't even have to replace the rear bracket that holds the microwave or drill new holes in the cabinet to hang it.

If you put in an OTR exhaust hood the new buyer will think they have to spend money to add the OTR microwave.

If your current cabinets have enough storage, you could consider removing a section to make space for a range hood. Your wood-colored cabinets would pair beautifully with stainless steel or brass hoods. You might also take a look at what some of our other customers have chosen for inspiration.

Thanks all for the feedback. We did get a small countertop one which we will keep and we have just a basic under caibnet hood being installed. Until we move or remodel the kitchen, this was the best option. And my spouse's shoulder is in bad shape so lifting plates into the microwave was getting very difficult.
