Baseball caps?.....

last modified: 8 days ago

Had my hair cut and it is thin and patchy, it has always been thin.

I am thinking of wearing a baseball cap outside during dog walks both to hide the patchiness and to prevent sunburn especially once Texas summer gets here. What do you think?

I wear one all the time when I walk for exercise. I say, go for it!

You really do need to protect your scalp. My brother lives in Texas and his wife wears a BB cap and a light weight scarf to protect her neck too.

I can't carry off the baseball cap look but I have a linen gardening cap which resembles a BB cap with a longer and wider brim.

Like dee, I wear one for walking outside in the sun, or to throw on if I need to run a few errands on a bad hair day. I am picky about mine bc I have a big head. Many cute caps are too small. The one that fit me best was a souvenir cap from Cafe du Monde in NOLA. I googles the brand and found plain ones at Amz so I have options! So far I have only ordered one, but they had a few colors.

Same here — I wear them working in the yard, on walks, hiking, etc. In the heat of summer, I like the ones with a mesh back.

I have an assortment. I wear them gardening for sun protection and for not great hair days they are perfect. Some are plain some advertise something about me (not a brand).

Lucille, sorry to hear your weight loss caused you to lose hair. It will probably grow back.

I have a baseball cap that I bought many years ago on Cape Cod that is my go-to for any extended time outdoors. I see them everywhere, on everyone.

Maybe you can find one with the logo of something you enjoy.

Hi, Lucille - we're in the same boat. I've lost my hair twice - first because of chemo, and about 7 years later when I developed a rare blood disorder. I never got a full head of hair back, and it's particularly thin on the top of my scalp. My dermatologist has been treating a spot she's concerned about. I never liked the way I looked in baseball caps and never found them comfortable but have come around to them.

I wanted to share one I really like a lot, it's from Athleta. It's soft and collapses to fit in my car storage compartment or in a tote bag so I always have it with me. The fabric is light and it's vented so my head doesn't get hot. I have the black one...https://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=599110002&vid=1&pcid=1013846&cid=1013846&nav=meganav%3AAccessories%3ACategories%3AHats#pdp-page-content

I don't wear caps though I understand the need even though I have thick hair. Just curious - what does your hair look like when you take the cap off? I would have to wash/dry my hair after I took the cap off before I went out in public because my hair would be all mucked up from being smushed inside the cap. I can see how people who pull long hair back in a ponytail look the same with or without the cap but at least my short hairstyle doesn't work that way. I wear a visor for golf to keep the sun and my hair out of my eyes, knowing that doesn't protect the scalp but my hair looks okay when I pull it off.

My hair is very short and thin, so pretty much unsmushable.

Lucille, I just ordered a couple of new caps thanks to this thread. :)

I really like the Kimes Ranch logo; other things I’ve ordered from them have been good quality.

ETA: King Ranch has some cool ones, too. When we had horses, I had a couple of them I wore when riding:

I don't wear baseballs caps, but I do like a wide brim hat with UV protection when walking or in yard. I have several from the Coolibar website.

I used to work in lawncare. I have shoulder length, curly hair. My every day uniform was ponytail and ballcap, with several hats in rotation. The hat did unmentionable things to my hair, especially when it was hot. The hat went on and didn't come off until shower time. Nobody needed to see that hair.

I have quite a collection of them now, and wear them when I'm out most of the time. They are totally acceptable in almost every situation nowadays.

And tho I do regret the impact it has on my hair, I still prefer wearing them.

P.S. There are satin lined caps that are supposed to be easier on your hair. I've yet to try that tho.

I wear a Panama hat when out walking.

I prefer a somewhat looser weave to allow a bit of air circulation for my head.

I don't wear them often, but I think they're a great option for sun protection. Absolutely wear it during dog walking or other outdoor activities to protect yourself.

I bought one of these Columbia Coolhead baseball caps when I was in FL and planning to spend a lot of time on a friend's new boat. It was great for wrangling my hair (which tends to get tangled terribly in wind) and really helped keep me from getting sunburned. I love the light material which helped me not overheat. This hat comes in a whole variety of colors.

Liz from Shrinking rocks a baseball hat among others. She doesn’t appear to have a giant mane of hair.

Sure, wear a baseball cap. You can find some cute ones that aren't like men's caps. I have a cute white one with tiny gold stars all over it, I always get compliments on my cap. I don't wear it a lot but if it's very hot and sunny, I do.

I have a neighbor lady that wears a cap all the time when she goes somewhere. Not sure why because she has lovely long blond hair. Her cap is a light blue Nike cap made for women. It looks cute on her.

I think for sun protection, you need more than a cap though, I would find a hat with a brim for walking in the sun.

Baseball hats are so over worn. They also can be warm. They are fairly heavy material. For sun protection and style I would look around for something with a wide brim and made of straw. You can do sooo much better than a nasty old baseball cap.

I have worn many a baseball cap in my day, so I say why not.

Lately, I've taken to wearing these:

Off topic but about hair loss and I will just put this out there for anyone that happens to see this: I started using a L'Oreal shampoo a while back and I thought that I actually liked it, it made my hair silky feeling and didn't make my scalp itch. But after I started on the second bottle of this, I realized that my hair was getting thin on top. I went back to my old shampoo and right away, I started sprouting a new crop of hair on top! It was very obvious that it had been the shampoo making my hair get thin!

I have a very short ’do’. that often takes some ’do-ing’ before heading out. The crown tends to stick straight up 😳! Baseball caps allow me to get going quickly when needed. I actually find Bball caps flattering to my face. However, it does depend on the bill….shorter ones are best.

Now is a good time to explain why I seldom post on the ”what are you wearing” thread: We’re a pretty casual bunch ’round here. I can run errands and meet friends for a casual …not mc d’s :) …lunch wearing a nice sweat outfit, sneaks AND a bball cap.

The cap, btw, is not ” nasty” … what an absurd idea, not to mention, insulting. Perhaps in your neck of the woods, arcy, your bball cap wearers are of the greasey -seldom- shampoo variety. So yes, I love baseball caps.

I love a baseball cap, too, and unless they're filthy, can't imagine how they can be considered nasty. My favorite is a basic navy Yankees cap, but they can even look very chic and upscale when you want them to. For instance, check out Chord ballcaps. Here are lots of photos on their Instagram page - you don't need an Instagram account to see them: Instagram

Baseball caps are my go-to, unless it is a very cold day. My favorites are my winter mohair ones with various colors. I always get compliments on the hats. Earrings, a nice scarf, and you can look tremendous. I have a Helen Kaminski for summer wear if I am going to lunch, something a bit dressed up. Looks great with linen. I have the mesh ones for walking the dog, playing tennis. The brim gives you shade when needed...thus, the baseball cap. I have worn them for years. And now, with the same issue of hair loss, I am upping my stash. All are machine washable, even the mohair ones. Years ago I bought the glass head from Pier One. Sometimes you can find one on ebay. It is perfect for drying the hats.

Check out San Diego Hat Company, and, believe it or not, at the beginning of winter season, CVS. I got a wool, herringbone design. Brims are perfect.

BTW, I like the velcro strap better than the buckle.

Same in my area. Women “dressed up” for lunch — shrug, tourists.

I'm going to skip over everything and just suggest that I've seen women wear other styles of caps. If baseball caps pr the logos on most of them aren't your thing, some styles to look at include newsboy/Scottish/British/flat cap, octagonal or 8 panel cap, a fisherman's cap, British beret - and looking at those might bring up some others. There are variations on bucket hats that look better than others, often narrower or wider brims and some uneven ones so that most folks can find one that suits them. If you need a hat, wear one and have some fun with it.

The only thing I'd associate hair loss with weight loss is if the diet didn't include sufficient protein which is necessary for hair growth. I'd ask a dr. about it as I've seen a lot of people who've lost a lot of weight (75, 100 or more lbs) and they don't have hair loss. Otherwise it could be a coincident medical issue such as thyroid disease.

IAC, I have no problem with wearing baseball caps, using scarves, or sun hats which I wore when I had much less hair. It was essential for not burning my scalp. However, there is a particular public figure who is usually wearing one who I find particularly detestable, so I've gotten a bad association with them. In her case, they leave me icy iykwim. They are so ubiquitous as to be beyond that association. I still wear my most comfortable one a lot. The brim helps protect my eyes as well.

Ratherbesewing, I love Liz! She might be my fashion role model. Although a lot of her clothes are from Clare V…$$$$…including that “oui” cap. (Around $60.)

I know this bc, fashion icon that I am, I googled one of her sweatshirts from the last season.

Bluebell, thanks for the Chord link. I bought the charcoal leopard one.

Some very sad, pathetic individuals are pot stirrers who deliberately lob a bomb then sit back and enjoy the attention. These often personality-disordered individuals commonly lack insight and so the capacity to change, unfortunately.

I'm loving the references to quality made baseball caps as I wear the usually available type often, but can now explore additional options to include in my collection. Looking forward to learning about additional brands!

I always disliked the way i looked in hats or baseball caps until I started running. Then a baseball cap or similar in winter became a necessity, and now I still wear them when my hair is unruly after a workout and I need to run into the grocery for aomething. And of course for gardening and still wear when walking or hiking. My favorites are from Athleta or Lululemom. I have a small-ish head and appreciate their sizing to fit women, the ventilation, the pretty colors and prints, and they are light and well-made. Running stores often have some good ones too without a garish logo.

Two of my favorites. The left one is Lulu; right is Athleta & i think the navy version of the black one posted above. I like the way it adjusts in back. I have the clip to use if it’s windy or if we’re in a boat.

I've been wondering if that opinion of baseball caps as 'nasty' applies to everybody who wears(or sells) them? 🤔

Off topic, but wondering if anyone has considered getting a wig?

I have a bunch of wigs since my hair has been thin for years.. But they are to me often too hot to wear in Texas, and I haven't worn one in a while. The baseball cap seems faster and simpler. and from what some say here, now made in fashionable styles/colors.

My favorite cap so far is the Chord cinnamon brown suede - just love it - but with the below freezing winter temps around here I need more coverage, so for me, the suede will likely be useful only in the Fall....

As for them being ’nasty’, I surely hope people realize they are washable. I put mine in a mesh bag and throw it in with the rest of my athletic clothing. Hang to dry.

Also the comment about shampoo…yes, shampoo can make a huge difference. I can’t use anything cheap with a lot of Sodium Laurel sulfate (or anything similar). It isnt good for your hair. My DH was using Loreal or something andnthe lady who cuts his hair told him tomstop as it was thinningnhis hair. She recimmended somemothers and it made a big difference in the texture and fullness of his hair.

Finally got my baseball caps. They are 'washed cotton' and have the feel of well worn jeans and are immensely comfortable. They look good too. I think I will be wearing them a lot.

    Glad you like them. :)

So what's the etiquette on baseball caps, right now I'm wearing one indoors but there's no person to see. Certainly I'd remove it at a restaurant dinner table, church. But at a grocery store? Apartment complex office? Convenience store?

“But at a grocery store? Apartment complex office? Convenience store?”

I‘d wear mine at these. Anywhere casual is fine, imo. I have nicer ones I wear out, and some that are only for hiking, yardwork, etc.

I wear my nicer ones sometimes at our favorite patio restaurants. My weekend uniform of white long sleeve shirt (sleeves rolled up) over a cami, jeans or khaki shorts, cute sneakers or flats. I like showing off earrings with my caps, as usually my hair hides them.

Regarding ”nasty” baseball caps, it was a style here to wear a faded, sun-bleached baseball cap as a sign that you were a local. Footwear was flip flops in all but the worst weather. Actually, both are probably still going strong.

Eventually one ages out of those styles.

I was never a baseball cap wearer until I started golfing, and now I wear them whenever I’m on the course and the sun is out. I have them from all over— from the NYT (faded black with a black, yellow and white spelling bee on it!}, a bookstore in Boston (denim embroidered with their squirreland books logo), a loosely woven linen, and some from Amazin. I prefer visors but worry that the top of my head is scorching. BB caps do give me hat hair but if I bend over with my head upside down and vicorously brush the hair away from my scalp that helps a LOT.

adding, as far as fashion goes I don’t wear a BB cap off the course. They aren’t warm enough for winter and if I needed a hat for summer I have cuter straw ones.

Lucille, glad you like them so far. In the heat, you might look for some lighter weight ones but the ones you have now will be perfect for cooler weather.

I used to worry a ball cap wasn’t appropriate everywhere, but my ’everywhere’ list has become a little shorter. It sort of depends, for me. If I’ve been to the gym and havent done much with my hair, the cap goes on if i need to make a quick stop. And i truly mean a quick few items of groceries, pump gas, pick up laundry, or go thru the car wash.

My older ones i save for gardening or other outside work.

Only men are expected to remove their hats indoors, ladies are not, and in some cultures, it's considered proper for ladies to keep their heads covered 🙂
