How do you actually use your garden space?

Hi everyone,

I’m working on my garden and realized I’ve focused a lot on plants, but not enough on actually using the space.

I’m trying to figure out simple things like where seating works best and how to make it more comfortable, especially in summer.

How do you usually use your garden or backyard? Mostly relaxing, hosting, or just for plants?

Thanks!

    Ditto the above comment:

“I sit and look at it. Then I jump up and pull a weed, cut a bouquet, transplant something, etc. My garden is always a work in progress.”

My yard is very much smaller than what is shown above, but there’s always something to tweek, move, trim, or cuttings to be made and rooted — such as the begonia at the foot of the table.

There’s a small yard past the patio.

Same here. I’ll go outside, sit down with a drink, book, or whatever & then see something that needs to be trimmed, pulled , etc. Even though we have very comfortable outdoor furniture I find it hard to sit very long without seeing something that needs attention.

Spring comes early here, my clematis is ready to bloom, 6+ tall.

Our yard is small so we just use the patio for seating and dining and gaze out at the lawn and the flowers and trees that border it.

There is a dry stream of rock and some stepping stones in the lawn for focal points.

We use solar screen fabric over the table to reduce glare.

I used to treat my garden like a “look at it” space, but now I divide it into zones. One small area for sitting (table + chairs), one for plants, and a bit of open space. It made it feel way more functional without needing a big yard.

Love this thread! I'm the same I go out to sit and end up pulling weeds for an hour 😄

One small thing that actually changed how I use my garden space: I added a compact solar panel setup near my seating area. It powers a small fan and some lights, so summer evenings became so much more comfortable no extension cords, no fuss.

Sharing a couple of photos my garden corner and the little solar setup I added. For anyone thinking about it, you don't need anything big or expensive. Small portable solar units work great even in shaded gardens if you position the panel right.

We have a big yard. A large yard proper, and a larger out back. Gardening, firepit, outdoor cooking and eating, a couple spots to hang out in a sky chair and watch the fireflies.. wild areas that I steward, a couple miles of hiking trails, several fruit trees, a few berry patches, and plenty of wilds to harvest.

I tend the garden beds and bins in the area closer to the house. They have more of the regular foodstuffs and pretty flowers. My love and I tend to work together on what we call adventure gardening out back. Grooming trails and carving out/cleaning up resting areas. Harvesting things. Sometimes sowing things. We tend to share mowing duties and deadfall cleanups.
