As you stated, something is definitely not right. The seating is set up like a waiting room. The styles of the furniture do not work well together. On the other hand, your area rugs look like very nice quality.

First and foremost, is what do you want to do in this room?

Once you decide that, you measure every wall, window, door, opening. Draw it in pencil on graph paper, 6" to a square. Layout is first, then you decide on style, color, etc. You also need to consider lighting for the space.

It looks like a fairly large room, so several groupings would probably work. But until we see the dimensions, it's all just guesswork.

Everything in your first two photos is exactly the same height, with nothing (very little) on the walls. Eyes like to bounce around a little…background, foreground, up, down, left, right. Your room is all horizon.

Current American style trends would prescribe a different, more broken up into smaller groups furniture arrangement but I believe lots of seating around the perimeter is more typical of middle eastern living rooms. What is your preference and goal?

What geographical region are you in? Many styles and preferences are local.

I agree with comments posted above - you need to (i) let us know how you want/need this room to function (e.g., is it the main tv viewing room?), and (ii) provide a scaled drawing of the room with all measurements (walls/windows/doorways/etc.).

It is a large room - it would look better if distinct "areas" were set up within the room.

I think you just need art on the big, blank walls.

Are you willing to let a lot of the furniture go? Rugs are lovely. But, too many in one area. Each rug should be used to make a zone.

I'd start the design around the French pieces, including all others that relate. So, just about everything in your last photo I would keep, except the ceiling lights

As for the rest, although I can't see every little thing, I would sell, donate, ask friends if they need anything.

    Window treatments gone.

The room needs to be painted. Because of the size, the different moldings and finishes, and the expanse of ceiling, consider a color wash, painting walls, ceiling and trim the same color.

Now you are working with a blank slate.

Choose the largest rug and group furniture around it, not on it, just the front legs.

TV viewing should be a separate area, and if you are set on a sectional, it could be positioned with back to the rest of the room. Then, the sofa, with another rug, will give you another zone. Sectionals can be awkward. Have you thought about a shape like this one?

A note about rugs. Be certain they do curl, bunch, or otherwise cause a trip hazard no matter the age of the occupants.

I would do this: Move the largest rug in front of the television. Then move the 2 slipcovered sofas down to the middle of the room, forming an L shape. The back of one sofa can face the room. This will create a cozy tv viewing area.

Move the French sofa to the adjacent wall. Coffee table in front, the 2 chairs with their backs to the room. Another cozy area.

Remove the black draperies. They add nothing to the room.

    Hi

Firstly I’d remove all the rugs and get two large rugs leaving a space around the edges so you can see the lovely wooden floor then you can make separate seating zones. Replace the curtains with floor to ceiling light coloured ones.

Invest in some new furniture perhaps with curves as the rooms are very square.

Try and keep all the wooden furniture the same tone as the warm wooden floor. As mentioned before go BIG with the artworks.

Finally don’t forget texture and colour which can be determined by the new furniture. Be bold and big the room can take it !

Lovely big room but needs zoning according to use. One area for TV/Music. One area for social gatherings maybe music in the background. And a quiet zone for reading and reflection.

Zones could be demarcated by using colour and/or tall, open, modern bookcases which could be situated on opposite walls of each zone and used to display favourite sculptures, ornaments and books.

What divadeb1 said. It appears you aquired someone elses's livingroom suit and added it to your own. Right now where are you watching that TV from? Set up a TV zone, and perhaps a reading loungey space with a chaise lounge, or a games table, this room could hold a baby grand piano... Everyone always talks about pulling furniture from the walls and this room could handle some of that. What did you have planned for this new sectional? What will leave?

There are some terrific questions in this chat.

I would start with how many people live here?

Is this a single family home?

Is there a style you are after?

    Why so many sitting areas?

Is that a heating unit on the wall?

The ceiling and walls need attention.

    The drapery needs updating.

    The lighting needs updating.

I would not buy anything new until you have a design plan in hand.

I agree with many of the comments so far but would add that in my opinion the cool greyish toned rugs do not work well with the warm toned wood floor. If you settle on two zones, two larger more complementary rugs would work better. Creamy whites, warm neutrals and earthy olive greens would be my go-to colour options.

Yasmine, where is this home located? What trends are popular where you are? Don’t worry about cranky comments regarding replying. Do so when you have time. You only just powered. Share new pics one you rearrange for more ideas. Good luck!

I am in Egypt and I’m trying to organize this area to a living area around the TV

It is such a large space it really deserves to be different zones that work together. A tv space, a reading or sitting space, maybe a space with table and chairs.

    @Yasmine Badran

Without room dimensions it's difficult to suggest a proper furniture layout. I also see a few seating areas in this room. Can you explain how this room is used? How many people would be watching TV at the same time? I simply need more information.

Saw your post of foyer/dining area from 2019. With some/a lot of editing, could this arrangement work for you/your family? Moving your dining table and chairs and buffet into the grand room. Making one generous seating area in front of the windows with the largest rug and the French Provincial furniture. Maybe the metal console table or the buffet could be used as base for the tv. If you need light control, off-white draperies would be functional and more aesthetically pleasing to let the light/windows/views take center stage when open. Hopefully, the second largest rug could anchor the dining table/chairs. Certainly less seating, but a more defined, cohesive, and balanced design. Beautiful architecture…Hope this helps…😊

    Here’s the layout…

Pull the furniture away from the wall and make at least one seating area in the middle of the room or away from walls. The other MAJOR issue is that the grey carpet clashes horribly with the brown tones in the wood floor. Many make the mistake of staining wood floors in grey which is horrid. Best to use warm tones in the room with warm wood floors.

You have a lot of space there! You could make a gym area in one corner! Or an office area. . .. Many options to use that room. First - get your colors right and get rid of greys and do not use grey or black. Have fun!!!

Remove carpet from any area that doesn't have seating, that alone will elevate the space. I see 2 that you can remove from pictures. The distance between sofa and the tv should be no more than 3 meters, unless you have a giant 80 inch tv. You don't need more seating, you just need to rearrange your current furniture. 2 distinct seating areas, 1 for tv and 1 for library + dining room table either in front of a window or in front of a nice decorated dressoir with hanging lamp right in the middle of the table would look really beautiful.

If TV viewing is the main goal or most pressing issue for you, I am not sure you have the TV on the best wall. Are you planning to put a sectional L shape across the windows and then across the TV? If you delete the chair to the left of the TV that certainly looks like you would have the room, but that is the smallest corner and yet right as you enter the room. I wonder if hanging the TV on the opposite wall would allow for a larger viewing area and keep a conversation area a welcoming first impression.

Estimating your room dimensions and using your current furniture and rugs, try making two separate areas defined by what I’m guessing are 8 x 10 rugs. Attached is my scribbled layout…. Hope it makes sense.

  • last month

too many rugs, I would use the upholstered sofas and some chairs in a grouping for tv viewing, anchored with the largest rug. Please don't have the sofas placed where you are sitting facing forward but tv is to your left or right, causing the viewer to turn their head to watch tv or sit crookedly to watch. I have that situation for guests, but my hubby and I have recliners that face the tv. It is mainly just the two of us so not a huge issue.

This is done without any room dimensions and with the existing furniture since you didn't mention you intend to replace it. However, I suggest you replace the chandelier for a larger one. The walls are bare, find art that you love for the wall. Although your rugs are beautiful, there are just to many giving the room somewhat of a cluttered effect; hopefully you can relocate them elsewhere in your home.

Yasmine, what a beautiful, big room, and your rugs are lovely! Ignore American comments about rugs. In general, Americans don't know anything about hand-knotted rugs, their value, or the skill involved in making these. (Your floors are also lovely.) Regarding arrangement, sitting groups (two purposes--TV and sitting/chatting groups) such as lisedv suggested would work. Best of luck!
