Douglas Fir vs AbsolutePost solid core posts

last month
last modified: last month

I'm seeking homeowner and builder experiences with WOODTONE AbsolutePost™ Solid Core post products.

The two types/materials of posts I am evaluating (8" x 8")

  • Douglas Fir solid core
  • AbsolutePost Solid Core (WRC Resawn or WRC S4S)

Climate context: High-Elevation Semi-Arid climate (USDA Zone 6b / IECC Zone 5B).

We have very low humidity in the Summer. In transitional seasons it is common to see 50-60 degree temperature swings in one day (temperature cycling). Freeze thaw cycles through the winter. The 3000 ft altitude brings on the high UV index.

My objectives are durability, longevity; and to avoid cracking, rotting, etc.

Sealing treatment will be a stain.

Please feel free to share advice. Thanks!

The type of mounting hardware to attach the bottom of the post to the concrete porch is similar to this style.

Maybe I should have cropped out the metal hardware at the top of this picture. The top of my post will be attached to framing under the front porch roof, like a beam or something. I am not a builder; just homeowner.
