Floof- What are you good at?

Go ahead, don't be shy- share what you feel are your talents both those you seem to have been born with and those you have worked hard to achieve.

I can spell, edit and proof other people's writing, and guess the meaning of words I don't know pretty well. This has had nothing to do with me trying to learn these things, I can just do it.

I am artistic when I let myself be.

I am not sure being able to spell and edit and guess is even a skill of intelligence.

I'm a good writer. Pretty good with anything with words.

I always thought I'd make a bad salesperson, but after years of volunteer adoption counseling at our local shelter, I've come to realize that I'm a great cat salesperson.

    - playing French horn

    - noticing when people are talking past/misunderstanding one another and getting the conversation back to center.

    - finding a ”third way.” This is typically a work thing. A colleague comes to me for input on whether A or B is the way to go. I can be depended on to offer up a C.

    - having a song lyric or TV/movie quote applicable to any situation.

Those are really good ones, @jakabedy.

I am very good at public speaking. I credit an acting coach my firm hired years ago.

I think I am good at distilling and explaining complex concepts.

I am very quantitative, which still surprises me because for many years that was my weakness and writing/reading were strengths.

    a great cat salesperson. Awww

Procrastination. I was going to answer when this was first posted but, you know....

I'm very handy and hands-on with all manner of home projects as were both of my parents. Then marrying a mechanical engineer who segued into residential engineering/remodeling/construction, all things in the fix-it and re-do realm are second nature to me.

    Procrastination is my super power.

Like Pal, I'm a good proofreader and editor. Just finished editing a journal manuscript and I have another manuscript to review.

I'm pretty good with navigating technology changes. I started off on Apple McIntosh in the 80's before Windows and have evolved my tech since then.

The academia thing in general but as I get close to retirement I am just over it at this point.

From my earliest memories I have had a natural aptitude and love for math. My dad used to take us to the news stand on Sundays and each kid could pick out a magazine or comic book and get some penny candy. I always picked out a workbook with word problems or logic puzzles. I liked that much more than reading a comic book.

I am still really good at math, logic, deductive reasoning. . .

I can take large, complex problems, see the way things connect, organize the chaos and create solutions where everything just falls into place.

I am really good finding information, I love learning and I am a fearless in the face of change. Building new solutions is fun in it's purest form. (This makes people who are resistant to change really uncomfortable).

I think most people with a math brain are naturally good at visual-spatial processing - Geometry and Trigonometry were my favorite math subjects. I could see the shapes and relationships in my head and know how they fit together. I can walk through a home and draw a fairly accurate floorplan - the room sizes and the way things fit together just makes sense to me.

How I envy those of you who are great conversationalists. Not my strength. I can listen really well, pick up on all the details, but I need to process all the information and will be ready to answer 3 minutes after the topic has changed.

In my work this is a strength - I write technical specifications for new processes or process enhancements based on business needs. I don't need to answer now - I need to absorb all the information and come up with the right answer. I just can't seem to switch it off when discussing a book or a movie with a group. What did everyone else think - what did they like and dislike, how does this relate to what I enjoyed, how does their perception differ from mine . . . All this input and nary the time to sort and organize it all. It is exhausting.

I am a good writer--I always have been. I still have the newspaper clippings from when I won 1st and 2nd prizes in junior high poetry contests. Poor Jeff P., who placed 3rd, never stood a chance.

I am a good cook (not baker).

I am a good conversationalist because I am rather nosy and ask a lot of questions. I like to figure people out, and I do so by inquiry. Most people love nothing more than to talk about themselves, and I find it fascinating.

I have a good sense of humor, including the ability to laugh at myself.

I used to be a textbook editor, so I had those skills, but I think I’ve gotten a bit rusty. Still pretty good at editing others’ work, but my own writing has gotten…lazy.

I am good at planning social events, big and small, and keeping in touch with friends. Someone once told me that I’m really good at connecting random groups of people.

I am very even-tempered. I don’t get mad often, and I don’t usually sweat the small stuff. If there’s an issue, I’m good at figuring out Plan B. I’m married to someone who doesn’t have these particular traits. He isn’t an angry guy, but he’s moody and doesn’t handle setbacks very well.

I am organized and reliable. And almost always on time.

That's why it is best to marry someone with a complementary temperament. I don't sweat the small stuff. But, since I am a "no detail too small" nut, that means nothing. My DH is the easy going one in our marriage.

I'm a good tour guide. It uses most of my natural skills: story telling, research, a good sense of humor and the ability to think on my feet. I'm also a decent writer. My first novel (book one of a trilogy,) is with a beta reader as we speak.

Unfortunately, I am very good at swearing.

As of lately, same, Rubyclaire. Same.

    @rubyclaire

Surely not unfortunately . . . really a necessity for immediate release of frustration, and of course for coping in general on ”those kind of days.”
