kitchen island color woes.

We recently moved into a new townhome with a great kitchen except the color of the island is a big turn off. It’s a medium brown. The rest of the kitchen cabinets are white and the backsplash is white with varying shades of grey.

I have and love my kitchen table and chairs but the brown island seems to be throwing everything off. I can’t afford paint the island. It’s $3k based on several estimates.

Here are pictures of island , backsplash and my table and chairs. Any suggestions to make this work are appreciated.

I would change out the cabinet hardware. Maybe a nickel or bronze. Bring home samples and see what you think. You can also post pics.

Thanks. I know it’s hard to see, but handles are nickel

I agree with changing out the hardware to a silver tone.

OR even add something in the aqua family.

A photo showing the items you mentioned above in the same photo would help for an overall look instead of all separate photos..

And, what does the hardware on your white cabinets look like?

The really attractive wood finish of the island is one of your "givens," which harmonizes well with the floor. The gray and white tile choice and chair upholstery are throwing off the space. All white tile would look better (I've read you can paint tile) And short white slipcovers would look much better as well. Then you would have a rich wood and white kitchen.

Please no white handles on the cabinets so dated and cheap looking. I have a bigger issue with the backspalsh IMO if you like the chairs do the backsplash in lrge format frosted glass tiles to sort of bring in the aqua for the chairs . That backsplash also looks like you tried to match the pattern in the chairs and missed .. The cabinet from what I can see looks great with the floor.

Thanks. We decided to swap backsplash for herringbone tile that has some grays and browns. I feel like the grays have a bluish tint. The chair fabric is an absolute favorite of mine so that’s a keeper. I’ll figure out a way to make it work.

    Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

You are making a better backsplash choice than the previous owner did, but before you go for that mosaic, consider larger format tile, perhaps with some color variation in the glaze that brings in the tones you want. Tiny little pieces of tile look busy and dated and theres so much grout to seal and maintain.

I like what you’ve selected. Oh, there’s that ”dated” word again, it always pops on here, lol. In any event, I’ve had something similar for 6 years ( probably dated, uh oh!! ) & have never had it sealed, & my kitchen is very large along with the backsplashes.

I buy what I like, really don’t give a damn about trends.

Can you show more of the issue vs your furniture?

I actually think you can make it work without spending $3k on paint — you might consider using peel and stick backsplash tiles on the island panels to lighten or modernize the look. If you choose a style that matches your white and grey backsplash (like marble-look, soft greige, or light stone texture), it can visually tie everything together and balance the brown. They’re affordable, easy to trim and install yourself, and don’t require grout or major prep, so it’s a simple way to refresh the island without a full renovation.

Your choice of backsplash seems to coordinate nicely. Depending on the pulls you have on the white cabinets, you can replace the pulls on the island, I'm showing 2 options.

I love the island color which is very current which has surpassed gray in the design world. Perhaps you can change the backsplash which is usually inexpensive, where you can bring in more warm tones to go better with the island.

Thanks everyone. I will definitely change backsplash but not really cheap. This is brand new construction. Too bad the so-called designer didn’t think to tie the island and perimeter cabinets together with the backsplash tile.

    That is frustrating, Mary G.

I think a rug and some accessories may bring things together while you figure out what long term changes you want to make.. Enjoy the beautiful things in your new home.

There is morning wrong with the island colour or the backsplash.

I'd try to accessorize the room with more warm wood tones of the island before you replace the backsplash. Retiling is not an inexpensive endeavor either.

Paint your ceiling a lighter version of the turquoise. Play down any gray as much as possible. Add in a bit of red accessory here and there. Natural wood, white with turquoise and a bit of red is very Scandi.

Id give my left arm for those cabinets. It’s the furniture that needs a change.

I figured out the way to make it work. I swapped tables added existing artwork and next year will paint island gray. I understand browns are in but I choose what I like not trends that come and go.

Thanks everyone putting this to rest and onto next project

You never posted the entire room for us to see but I preferred your glass top round table to this one with your chairs... and island.

The warm wood cabinets are the best thing about the whole house. The cold chilly depressing gray is the worst. Accentuate the wood with more colors pulled from nature, and you can keep som gray, as it occurs in some bits of nature in the rocks and the arctic areas. But it shouldn't be at the forefront of any design. It's a background player only. And that's what the major issue was with design leading up to 2020's enforced daily contact with prison gray. All white, or all gray, is boring and cold. Monochrome is very hard to pull off with depth and warmth.

I too love your Island colour as is.

If you do decide to replace the backsplash, complement the island‘s counter/light brown wood, perimeter cabinets and flooring to tie the room together in a calm, classic way. Paint the walls in the same undertone as the tiles to create a more seamless kitchen. The fabric on the chairs shouldn’t drive the choices (other than art and accessories) and don’t suggest painting the island. Hold off doing anything until you live with it for a bit.
