Is this enough space for a Breville oven?

last month
last modified: last month

I want to start using a Breville Air Fryer Pro because it is so much easier on my back than my regular oven. We have one that we used during kitchen renovation and in our other apartment. Both spaces had very high clearances above them.

Now the only space we have for it in our galley kitchen is on this countertop. The manual says add 4" on all sides and 6" above. I am 1/4" shy of 6" above. Do you think this will be a problem?

I plan on pulling it farther away from the wall when using it. But, they get extremely hot and I am concerned about what it might do to the underneath side of my cabinets. Is this a valid concern?

Thoughts?

It should probbly be fine. We have the Breville pro but it does not have the air fryer feature. Ours sits on the counter in the kitchen. It’s been fine with the cabinet above.

Thanks for your reply and for adding a pic too @Clyde Kalvin.

per the manual "• When operating the oven, keep a minimum distance of 4" (10cm) of space on both sides of the appliance and 6" (15cm) above."

"Do not use the appliance near the edge of a countertop or table. Ensure the surface is stable, level, heat resistant and clean."

    All below, please?

"Clare Andrews, presenter, author and all-around air fryer expert, says you need at least 6 inches of clearance around all sides to operate your air fryer safely."

"Zwilling and Staub’s chef, Paul Bough, says that the ideal surface for an air fryer is a heat-resistant countertop, such as porcelain or stainless steel."

“Ensure there is adequate space on either side for ventilation and avoid crowding it with other heat-generating appliances, like toasters or kettles, to prevent overheating,” he says. An essential tip for keeping counters clear in a small kitchen, especially."

The general rule is to keep a distance of 5 inches, most easily measured using the ‘hand-span rule’. This simple method of gauging space is an easy way to ensure there is enough space around your air fryer. Spread your hand out wide - that's approximately how much space your air fryer needs to stay cool and comfortable.

What can I put under an air fryer to protect the counter?

Beyond placing your air fryer on a heat-resistant surface, Clare suggests a heat-resistant mat as one of the best air fryer accessories for optimal worktop protection.

She says: “The baskets can get rather hot, so make sure you protect your countertop with a heat-resistant mat.”

    _______________________________________________

You're only pulling it forward abut 4".......your counter is 25" depth, and the fryer is 17" I wouldn't want it closer to the edge than an exposed four in front of it.

I have had the Breville Air Fryer Pro for several years. It is not a traditional air fryer but actually a super convection oven. I only use the air fry setting for frozen french fries or other items that will benefit from this feature that wont drip a mess on the heat elements below the basket tray. I use it daily as a toaster and a oven. I love it. And it comes with two oven racks which is especially handy during holidays. I had the Breville Pro before this one and have been a fan for years.

Regarding the placement, mine has 4” clearance on back, more than 4” on the sides and 5 3/4” on top. The oven vents out the sides so i would scoot yours over to the right. I do not pull mine out to use. My countertop is marble and I have no discoloration nor damage to the countertop, wall, or cabinets. I have not had a recipe call for more than 385 for air fry. I have never had issues with it being dangerously hot, not even when I roast or bake at 425-450 or broil. I just did an experiment for you and pre-heated it in air fry mode to 385. The top and sides are barely warm to the touch but the bottom and back do feel hot. Since you have a wood counter, use a heat resistant mat. I highly recommend this oven!

I have considered and abandoned the air fry idea. If I couldn't bend to an oven? A regular Breville sans air fry would be fine , I don't fry

That said? I use my George Foreman and would DIE without it. The cheap one four serve with removable grill plates, no temp control. Amazing chicken, steak, salmon, bone in pork chops....you name it.

I keep a spare....just in case. My oven? Roasted whole organic chicken on Sunday and that's about it. A frozen pizza every couple weeks.

Yeah...I do a lot of George.......have an addiction to the easy peasy Idahoan in the packet....two minutes and they last three days lol /one packet.

ZERO smoke, safe anywhere on counter, cleans up in a single minute, stow in the drawer. DONE. I would DIE ....sans my George: )

    I gift!!

    A spare for the sister!

I store my Breville in a similar "corner" and I pull it out and to the right when I cook anything in it. Seems like common sense to pull a hot appliance away from painted wood! I put felt pads on the bottom of the feet so it can easily be slid forward and back. Since you have wood counters I would look for one of those large glass "trivets" or cutting boards to put under the oven.

We use the daylights out of our George Foreman grill and our Breville convection toaster oven. We probably don’t have the recommended space around the sides of the Breville, I confess. and it drives me crazy that DH uses the Foreman on the glass cooktop ( but it is stored elsewhere).

Sooooo many people have a Foreman , long forgotten in a pantry or basement. If you realize you are cooking two sides simultaneously, FLIP half way...you realize you have pure easy peasy gold in that pantry or basement. Don't!! Over cook: )

I do a split broiler in 28 min, 15/13 exactly. The lid doesn't come close to closing an it matters not! My near gourmet market asked if I was trying to grow feathers.....that's how often I get them there.😂

I'm wondering what very thin heat proof surface I can place the Breville on that won't significantly reduce the distance between the top of the unit and my cabinets. Any ideas?

I don't use the air fryer function. I just like the Air Fryer Pro model because it allows for two trays to go inside. I can roast veggies on one tray and make a meat loaf or roast chicken on another.

I gave you that in my comment way above, Kendrah...............and the picture vaporized...wth??

    Thanks @JAN MOYER!

I wonder if I can adhere something to the underneath side of the mat to make it easier to slide on the counter so I can pull it away from the wall when using and push it back when not in use.

I would find a metal shop and have them cut you two rectangles of stainless steel with deburred edges. One to stick on the counter sit and one to stick to the underside of the cabinet. Double-sided tape. The second piece optional, just for peace of mind, I don't think you will have heat issues. Thin gauge, like 20 or 22 ga, would be fine. You can probably order this stuff cut to size online too.

  • last month

@John Liu - What about sitting the Breville oven on top of a full sized 20 gauge stainless steel sheet pan like this LINK Then between the sheet pan and the counter, I lay a thin piece of felt, or maybe a dishtowel so it can slide on the wood counter more easily when I want to pull it away from the wall while in use? Does this sound like a good set up?

Would setting out a small desktop fan aimed at the underneath side of the cabinets be helpful at all for diverting the hot air and blowing it outwards or is this overkill or poor logic?

And I put this oven to good use for 3 meals a day! i wore out my first one but it lives on at my husband’s shop. In other words, it gets heavy use without damaging anything around it.

A heat resistant mat or inch thick piece of Rockwool fireproof insulation board can be placed on top of the oven. I use a DT 501 stainless Ninja because of the interior space..

  • last month

I'd have thought Breville would advise against placing something directly on top of the oven, but it appears they in fact sell boards to sit directly on top of the oven. I like the idea of a rockwool board.

oooh! Makes me want a blue Breville! I got mine in the matte white, so it blends in with my white cabinets and mostly white backsplash. My mother has her Breville on a counter out in the garage. They have a small house/kitchen and she made room on the kitchen counter for an airfryer, so the Breville got bumped.

I want one in white with brass handles. It would look great in my kitchen. However, they only make the smaller model in these wonderful colors. The larger Pro that can roast a chicken and take two tray at once only comes in stainless and black. No fun!

Kendrah, the sheet pan would be fine!

Kendrah, How's this for a RADICAL thought? Just buy the darn Breville? : Put sliders beneath and move on?

I doubt you even need the heat mat

  • last month

What about a silicone small appliance mat? I know they make sliding mats but I am not sure if they would slide on the wood. I have a sliding mat under my mixer and coffee makers and they slide well on my leathered granite. I am not sure how well that would work on wood. It is silicone so it would protect your wood counter from the heat of the oven. We cut our mat so it only fits the base of the mixer and coffee makers exactly so you really don't see it. With that being said we never pull our Breville toaster oven out when we use it.

    Something similar to these:

    ^^^

Not big enough. Read your dimensions on the appliance.!!

    Easiest and best

    OR

Get a piece of STAINLESS cut to right size. Even a sheet size ( cookie/rimless isn't big enough )

Put the little sliders on the bottom

Lest the thread on something simple grow to a thousand comments lol

    Or??

Just put the darn sliders on the FEET of the machine. I hardly think you will set the counter on fire.

  • last month

The mat you posted is also not big enough for the dimensions @Jan. A full sized sheet pan is large enough.

In fact? Go shopping right now, as you have a blizzard headed your way. Good weekend for a chicken and last bend in your oven!!!

You may be in allllllllll weekend. and beyond.

There are larger fire resistant mats:

24 x18 inches Tabletop Grill Mat for Countertop Heat Resistant

Also look into cork, it is resistant to fire and high temps.

Now I want a Breville - I have a countertop one that I don't use very often (= it's not stored on the countertop) because I have a double oven. HOWEVER, I'm looking at new appliances - and the issue I've been having is giving up the double oven. The Breville looks so nice - I think I could give up my upper (smaller) oven for it + that will raise the bottom oven up a bit (= easier/much safer access).

Jan - I've never owned a George Foreman - and now I need to purchase one.

@Kendrah I got home and measured how much room is between the top of our Breville and the cabinet. Ours has 7 1/2 inches of room.

@JAN MOYER - is this the right one?

Free overnight delivery - I could use it for dinner tomorrow night!

They have one this one that is submersible for easy cleaning:

I don't know how difficult it is to clean the first one (this one also has variable temp). Also, has overnight delivery. However, "fancier" isn't always better.

    Let me know.

Sorry @Kendrah for jumping in on your post.
