could use some help with stain and paint ideas!

last month

After 10 years in our home, we are finally going to repaint all of the interior walls in hopes of toning down our cabinetry and floors. In addition to wall paint, we are also going to have our cabinets, professionally sanded, and refreshed. Hardwood floor refinishing will also be happening soon. We plan on keeping the warm tones on the cabinetry and flooring, they are very stumped about wall colors. Accessible beige, and taupe of the morning have both been recommended. I would love some thoughts! Thank you so much.

The wall paint hinges on what you end up doing with the cabinets and flooring -- have you picked those colors yet?

They will likely be staying cinnamon/cherry tones.

IMO until the floors and cabinets are done no way would I be choosing wall color. With the tones you mention I would do Healing Aloe BM cut 25% it looks awesome with wood and is a true neurtral > I hate beiges and taupes they are IMO never neutral

Thank you so much! And just for clarification, the pictures that I posted are what the previous owners had painted. I had just lived with it. That was not my choice! I’m just so excited to be able to have something different now.

This is the way the backsplash currently looks, which is not going to change, if that helps at all

And here is the room opposite of the dining room room

With the gold mustard color dominating the appearance, it's hard to envision new paint colors. Try priming the kitchen and adjacent sitting room's gold walls with white primer. Then you can consider new colors at your leisure while they do the refinishing of cabinets and floors.

You can also walk around your house outside to see if trees and overhanging branches have grown to block light into the windows (especially your dining room window) in the ten years since you moved in. This is a common cause of gradual darkening inside houses that used to be "light, bright and airy", as the real estate maxim goes.

Interestingly, it’s a tope with strong yellow undertones, but it looks so yellowish in the kitchen pictures! It is the same color in the piano room and the previous owners painted it absolutely everywhere! lol

The same color carries through the kitchen into the living room and into all the other rooms. I don’t have many natural breaks

Please post an update when you are ready.

In general, I dislike taupe, gray or yellowish walls. In an open space such as yours, a slightly off-white makes a neutral canvas for your furnishings and art, and there's no issue with where to "break" colors for the different rooms. I don't mean stark white -- select a white that has an undertone that goes with your cabinets -- warm (yellow, pink) or cool (blue, gray). I'm not a professional but I'm sure one of the pros (e.g., Patricia) can make specific suggestions of colors and brands.

Thank you! This really helps, and I think that I will go with a more neutral white. We are going to keep all of the bright white chair rail/trims, so I will be looking for one to tie in with everything we talked about and the kitchen backsplash.

I was happy to read that the prior owner is the one who selected this wall color:

It looks like the person was colorblind!

Changing the wall color in your home will make a huge difference!

Please make sure that you come back and post photos after you've finished! It's good for people to see how much of an impact paint color can make in updating a home.

Yes, I have hated the baseball color since we moved in 10 years ago. Because it is throughout the entire house less the three small bedrooms upstairs and our office, the idea of having the whole thing changed, felt very overwhelming. Now that the kids are grown, it’s time!

    Base color!! Darn AutoCorrect! 😂

If these are the actual tones in the tile, and not the lighting in the photo, I see mauve/pink undertones.

obviously anything in the yellow/gold family is a huge NO.

when choosing any color, they all have undertones. you want to stay in the pink/red family of those undertones. Grays w/pink undertones should be your goal. Taupe

what about this one? try a sample

I like the contrasting Bedrock too

I like the deep aubergine shades too

according to this, accessible beige is too yellow.

But you could always get a sample and see how it looks in your lighting

This is so helpful! Thank you so much! Work is starting today on refinishing the cabinetry, and once that is all finished I will have some fresh eyes.

This is the colour I chose, lighter than Taupe of the morning. However, what ever paint colour you choose paint a large sample on a large board or foam core and walk around your rooms with the sample at different times of day, in different lights.

Wall color is driven by the colors in the flooring, cabinets, countertops, backsplash and furnishings.

Can you share a picture of the kitchen so we can see the counters with the current wall color, floor color, cabinets and backsplash.

You are keeping the cherry wood finish on the floor and cabinets, but will also have the yellow in the flooring in the kitchen and from the one picture you also have a taupe backsplash.

Taupe and yellow dislike each other, so we have a bit of a fight going on from the start of things unless you are willing to either update the backsplash or the flooring.

    (Countertop undertones are still unknown).

I love BM Navajo White with Cherry and I am pretty sure it would work well with the flooring in the kitchen, but I am not sure how well it will work with the backsplash or the sofa (also has violet undertones, but is dark enough to possibly work with Navajo White).

BM Ballet White and Shoji White may be your best bet if you want something that light.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting mentioned Healing Aloe. Green is mother natures favorite color to use to blend different colors. It is everywhere in nature. I may go with a greener green rather than one that is as blue as Healing Aloe, but I like the idea of Paris Rain or possibly October Mist.

I have been playing with Smokey Taupe. I still have time, but thought this was pretty not

I would not choose eiher of those tones I do not think beige is a neutral and IMO taupes are a dated look. Have you looked a soft grayed green maybe cut so just a hint of color. I use Healing Aloe from BM often in new builds where clients have to choose a wall color before they have decorated . I cut up to 50% for a nice hint and it looks awesome with really all woods and IMO is a true neutral.

    Thank you!!! This really helps

Well… still have not picked wall color, but maple need to pick maple floor finish by tomorrow- natural or gunstock and choosing between satin and matte water based sealer. Glad I waited on paint! Which floor stain would look best with cabinets and tile?
