Help with new fireplace!

Hello, we want to update and have a more modern fireplace. Should we add cabinets or shelves on the sides too? The left side is wider than the right side of the fireplace. We also plan to repaint the whole room a warm white? Can you help with some design ideas? I like simple, modern, midcentury styles. What would you do with this space?

Do you think I should add shelving?

Because you have the door so close to the wall on one side adding shelving might not be a good idea. You could put your tv on the other side so it wouldn't be so high and have a nice long console under it.

For a white to work with the sofa and rug, check out this one and see how it looks with all the natural light.

    Function is the keyword.

Do not do shelves if you will be required to purchase items to place on the shelves.

To me it makes more sense to place free standing chests on either side of the fireplace and hang art above. Everyone needs additional storage. Everyone doesn't need additional shelving.

I'd work to place the TV on a different wall.

Please ;post a picture of the entire room. The style of FP should go with the rest of the room. Right now it looks like your furniture layout is not conducive to comfortably watching the TV. No to shelves.

    Here is the room!

I'd move the TV to the left of Fp as suggested above. Replace the 2 armchairs with upholstered swivel chairs for comfortable TV watching. Maybe just change the FP surround to a simpler one.

what if I tiled all the way up? And no shelves.

I will bet that the fireplace was built in the 90s! I don't know what make builders think that using 12x12 floor tile for fireplace surrounds was a great idea - but many did!

A slab fireplace that goes all the way up (or tile) would look so much better than what you currently have.

The mantel/legs are too small for the fireplace bump out - it would look a lot better to treat the entire bump out as a fireplace.

There are SO MANY fireplace designs that you need to look through in order to narrow down what you'd like to do. I am currently finalize updates for four fireplaces = I have been doing a lot of scrolling through ideas.

I wouldn't add the book shelves either - I think cabinets + art would be a better idea.

I know many people who have a tv over their FP - if it works best for you, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I didn't put my tv over the FP in the room - but I also have a long wall where it works better (with a long floating console).

I like it all the way up the wall. No lights or anything else on the TV part of the wall. I don't think you have room on the right for a console with the door. Maybe a larger tree to balance the console on the left
