Why do dogs always get into the most disgusting things...

Horse poop? Yea, she loves that (probably one of her favorite things actually). Random garbage on walks? Sure, why not. Dead animals? Oh, yes (she even rolled around in one once!). I don't understand it. I just hope this phase ends soon. So, tell me about all the gross things your pets have gotten into.

Our friend's springer used to roll in dead fish along the shores of Chautauqua Lake.

A friend’s dog consumed a used feminine hygiene product, resulting in a trip to the vet ER.

^^^^^my daughter's dog used to look for those - didn't completely consume them - but liked them a lot. Yuck.

I had a 6 lb dog that clearly discovered an animal carcass near our lake house - we were packing up to leave - and when I went to put him in the car - he SMELLED DISGUSTING! I had just finished giving him his bath about 15 minutes before - so, he had to have bath # 2.

What doesn’t Frank get into ?

    Ruffed Grouse

    Voles

    Weeds

    Wet snow

    Dry snow

    Sticks

He’s stopped eating and rolling in horse poop as I no longer have horses. He eats beetles, grasshoppers, and frogs, though. He rolls in deer and moose poop.

TRIGGER WARNING: Don't read this if you don't want to hear something completely gross. You might hurl.

The only way I learned that my dog got into the trash and ate a used tampon was from the string coming out of his rear as he tried to take a dump. He was blocked up and I had to yank it out by the string. Holy hell. It was so gross I almost puked on the sidewalk.

Kendrah, years ago, I was visiting a friend in England whose Lab used to seek out her knickers (that's what they called women's underwear). We were sitting in her kitchen having tea, when she looked out the window to her backyard and said, "What is hanging from Teddy's bum?..."

Goose poop. LIME GREEN goose poop is the best. It is apparently a delicacy.

I have dogs who love the stuff. We enjoy going to the parks and walking around, and so there's often goose poop everywhere. Sigh. I have to watch for their tells, because they're sneaky and will try to grab a bite and/or roll in the stuff given half of a second.

People love petting (friendly) dogs, and one of my dog memories involves my girl dropping her shoulder and smearing a huge fresh streak all the way from her neck almost down to her butt before I could stop her. A lady with a very outgoing personality, who was a bit too enthusiastic (IMO) reached for her to pet her without even asking me - which is not normally a smart thing to do anyway, because one never really knows what a strange dog will do. But in this particular case, she grabbed onto a dog who was sticky and smeared with green goose poo. The look on her face when she pulled her hand back....

Part of me felt bad, but wow - maybe next time don't just grab onto a dog without asking first? LOL.

@roxsolid your frank and my frank are obviously brothers from another mother/father but they sure both have a strong prey drive.

i can't count the number of rabbits this doofus has unalived. the first time he brought one in through the dog door, he and i had a come to Jesus talk and he quickly learned it was ok to bring it to the door to show it to me but it's a big no-no to bring it inside.

Ninapearl, my Frank is a joy! He’s pretty much the smallest dog that I have ever had. He potty trained extremely early, he has no fear of a crate if he’s told to go in it, he’s very sociable, good indoor manners, loves kids, excellent recall, and I love him to bits. He loves his outings. Frank tries to bring his treasures in as well. When he’s told no he goes and hides it somewhere outside.

    LOL, your Frank is cute!

My sons Golden which DH and I often walk, loves mushrooms. When it's mushroom season we learn where they are (usually the same place year after year) and learn to avoid them. He is fast.

this diligence came after a $4,000 vet bill and two nights at the vet wondering if he would make it. They have contemplated a muzzel but so far haven't done it.

Yikes. So disgusting. Then, you have to figure out how and where to wash it off.

Once my late dog Fred ran down into a stream. So muddy and smelly. I put him on the deck and brought out pails of water. Luckily it was only his paws..

Going down memory lane, many years back when people didn't pick up after their dogs, my sister was talking to a friend. The friend said, I guess your were on R street, I saw poop with multi-colored pebbles.

It was actually terrarium rocks. Her Springer got into everything. They had to baby-proof the cabinets.

Anybody else remember the Dog in Elk thread on here many, many years ago? The poster’s dog found a deceased, partially decomposed elk in the woods and you can imagine the rest. The thread went on and on for MONTHS. It was classic.

I guess I have been blessed with my dogs. They rarely have had the opportunity to get into trouble like that. I guess Murray was the worst because he would get into the trash until I got that figured out. I found out he could even get into cookies I left in an ice cooler in the sink. He wasn't all that tall but he figure out a way. I was really looking forward to those cookies too. Also one time someone gave me the rest of an Easter egg shaped cake from a bakery. It was in a box. Far back on the counter. I went out. When I came home, Murray greeted me at the door with purple ears!!! And the box and crumbs all over the floor. It was a good thing I loved him so very much.

On the other hand, Miss Kitty, a rescue I got when I lived in Baltimore was an indoor/outdoor kitty. For the most part she behaved herself, but one time she brought a live mourning dove and released it in the house. I was able to catch that one and release it. I decided that when she would come to the door at night, if she could meow, then I was safe. I learned the folly of that when she meowed, I let her in and then she dropped a live mouse on the floor who then proceeded to run. It was like a Tom and Jerry cartoon. I was running around with a broom trying to whack the mouse. Miss Kitty was sitting quietly just watching. I couldn't catch it so I propped open the front door just a tiny bit and prayed for it to go away. I guess my prayers were answered because I didn't see the mouse again and Miss Kitty did not go outside again.

@blfenton a dane friend of mine almost lost her girl to some sort of mushroom (i don't recall what it was). her dog got very ill very quickly, ended up spending 3 nights in the e.r. and thankfully survived. any time they are anywhere where she might be allowed to wander off leash, they put a muzzle on her now!

Littlebug, that post was the first thing I thought of. It was hilarious in a gross way.

My sweet White Swiss Shepherd is obsessed with deer poop, specifically of the less than solid variety. We moved to a rural area with some acres of property and when I bring her through our pasture (we don't actually have horses), she will try to quickly scarf down any deer diahrea she can find. It's so disgusting. I don't understand it at all. She has also been known to roll in stinky things.

Wally, my 25-pound dachshund, loved to eat poop. If we were walking him, we had to always be looking ahead for anyone who didn't pick up after their dog. So gross. But the funny story was that one of my friends on the next block loved Wally, and he loved her. One day, she was outside waiting to be picked up for a birthday party. She always had treats for Wally, and she went in to get one, and he bolted in after her. She had left the birthday cake on the floor inside the door, and he took a big bite out of it. I was mortified, and she was laughing so much, and later told me this is talked about at every birthday, how she tried to hide the hole with icing. She did confess to them that her favorite dog in the whole world did it.

I’ve witnessed dogs do some truly unspeakable things, including enthusiastically licking their own genitalia and then sprinting toward me like they’re delivering a royal kiss to my lips! They can run circles around me, bounce up and down like furry pogo sticks, and wag their tails with Olympic level intensity… but my face? Absolutely off-limits.

Once the chaos settles and everyone remembers their manners, they may receive one polite forehead kiss. Terms and conditions apply.

The best thing I taught my dog is “Leave it!!” The trick is that one must have a visual of said dog to know when there’s a need to issue the command! 🤣 But, anyone who’s had a dog in their life can certainly relate to these stories. I think though that @roxsolid Frank doggie is really quite exceptional. He seems to have aspirations to becoming a bird dog with that ruffed grouse trophy or maybe a cat with that vole.

Horse hoof trimmings, "tootsie rolls" (i.e. cat poop fresh out of the littler box), condoms, feminine hygiene products, goose poop.......

Oh boy - all these anecdotes reminded me of a cute little pug we used to play with, who lived in the neighborhood near our school on the shore of the bay. During red tide, she evidently enjoyed rolling in dead, decaying fish, but I only learned that after petting her...🤢

Palisades - "Terms and conditions apply." I am giggling out loud. Well done. 😆

    =====

I had labrador retrievers most of my life. They're generally exuberant during adolescence but settle down nicely. So easy to train! I thought I was Cesar Milan. 🤣

And then.....I got my first terrier. Wow. I am on my 4th now and have learned why they have a reputation. Every dog I have ever owned goes through formal training, the labs always obtained their CGC. I am the weirdo who took great pride in having perfectly mannered dogs. And again, then I got into terriers. 🤣 My dog training friends have enjoyed watching my journey.....

All my dogs know the command "leave it." It is just that my terriers don't particularly care what I want sometimes. Training is a life long journey with these maniacs. And now I am paying for my earlier statement that every dog I own will get their CGC. Sigh. ONE terrier came close. Sort-of. The other 3? I may as well be trying to teach them physics. But we struggle on.... 😄

Let me state right up front that I’m not a dog person. Don’t hate me! I experienced several not-pleasant dog encounters when I was little so my feelings were established early.

All that said, I remember very clearly an incident that happened during a family reunion when playing in grandma’s yard with my cousins. Warning: this is truly gross. Grandma had several dogs, one of which must have had an intestinal disturbance. While cousins, siblings and me were rolling around in the grass, that dog ran up to us and promptly barfed next to my brother’s head. Another dog ran up and ate it. Still warm.

Almost makes me heave thinking about it some 60 years later. 🤢

Dogs really can keep one humble.

    Don’t hate me!

i don't even dislike you! i respect individual rights to feel however one feels about any particular animal. i'm not a cat person, it isn't that i don't like cats, they just aren't my cup o' tea. that being said, my son and his family have 3 cats. one of them has taken a particular shine to me and whenever i visit, luna spends a lot of time in my lap. she's a sweet girl!

as for your childhood experience, it's often referred to as "re-eating" when a dog eats its own vomit and much of the time it's because they eat too fast. if it's another dog, s/he is just looking at it as food. dogs can definitely be GROSS!!

    sorry for the TMI.

    Let’s see.

The lab at the lake that scarfed up an ALMOST totally bone whole fish carcass, backwards and my husband had to dig it out of her mouth. Yes, she was on a short leash. He took forever getting the stink off his hands.

The German Sheppard that used to chase, catch, and eat bumblebees, then throw up inside.

The current dog, who can get to rabbit poop in the back yard quicker than anyone can move. Then throws up a couple hours later.

OMG - also just remembered my sister's mixed breed girl used to get into the diaper pail until I got one with a locking lid 💩

Oh, and once she ate a tube of toothpaste - and half the tube!

@roxsolid - Wow -that's an impressive little dog!! You'd think that he had terrier in him!

I have a 10 lb little white mix breed - she is very sweet - except when a squirrel enters her yard! She must have caught 5-6 of them last spring - would break their necks - and then bring them to door for me - looking very proud!

dani, he is a fun little dog. Poodle, shih tzu mix. He was supposed to be my lapdog.

    I do! Absolutely hilarious!

"It is just that my terriers don't particularly care what I want sometimes."

No, they don't, do they. My pooch is part rat terrier. Smart as a whip and overall beautifully mannered, but if she's onto something she pays no attention to anything other than finding that prey...

We used to live in the country when I was still living at home, and it was a sheep farming region. There was an abundant supply of dead sheep scattered around the countryside and due to the hot climate, they were extremely stinky. Our dogs would take themselves off for a walk and come home absolutely reeking after they had rolled around in a carcass. :-P

My most favorite dog. She loved to go out at nite look for possums. She didnt hurt them, but when you scare a possum they poop and the most awful black, tarry, smelly poop comes out , then they play dead. I would have to go out in the nite and get her, and give her a couple of baths. And then she wouldnt let me blow dry all that fur.

Not stinky but what a chore!!

"scare a possum they poop and the most awful black, tarry, smelly poop comes out " hmmm this explains what I find around my fountain/heated bird bath. I was thinking it was bats but possom is very likely.
