I’m installing a patterned wallpaper on this wall and trying to decide how to treat the window recess.

We see three options...

1) Wallpaper stops at the outer edge and leave the recess painted white

2) Wallpaper stops at the outer edge and then only paper the walls next to the window (this would let the pattern on the main wall continue)

3) Is there a way to wrap the pattern into the recess that wouldn't clash with the main wall?

Looking for what’s considered best practice and what looks most intentional long-term. Thank you!

Thank you all for the feedback and examples! Just to clarify, this is not meant to be an accent wall. All walls in the room will be papered. We're just struggling with the recessed window region. just I've updated the photos to label the surfaces and have summarized the options below:

1) Paper the main walls (Surface A and B) and paint the recess (Surface C and D). Add drapes/curtains inside the recess to fill the area.

2) Paper the main walls and the recess wall next to the window (Surface A, B, D). That gives visual continuity of the pattern from the ceiling to the floor. Paint the side wall of recess (Surface C).

3) Paper the main walls and both parts of the recess walls (Surface A, B, C, D).

The examples from Beverly (Option 3) is what we would really like to do. However, due to the wallpaper pattern we are using, we're struggling to see if that's possible without having major visual clashing between Surface B, C and D.

I think our next step is we're going to mock-up some cheaper paper and see how it looks before we commit to anything.
