Primary Bath needs medicine cabinets and vanity lights

last month

We have a new build primary bathroom with a 64" counter with 2 sinks. I was planning to get 2 Kohler Verdera medicine cabinets in brushed gold trim which are 20 inches wide and add sconces around them (like their add in the bottom photo attached).

I now think 64" is not enough space to have sconces next to the medicine cabinets.

(5 foot vanity and 3 foot linen closet was a mistake that will not be undone for the time being.)

The sconces are for makeup and style, not overall lighting. There is a recessed light over the main area and one over the tub.

We definitely want medicine cabinets, not mirrors.

Would it be better to find one large medicine cabinet (maybe 50"?).

Is there a better lighting solution for the bathroom sink area than sconces? I was hoping to have complementary lighting around the bathtub (see layout).

My friend has suggested we rip out the linen closet and replace the vanity before we move in but I don't think we can stomach more construction right now.

Any lighting and decor assistance be greatly appreciated!

    1. How wide are the sinks?
    2. What is the distance between the edge of each sink and its adjacent wall?
    3. How high is the ceiling?

Is it really too late to change that linen cabinet? You will have to live with this for the next 10, 20 or more years!

You would have been better off, space wise, to use a tall/deep pantry cabinet that matched the vanity cabinets. You wasted a lot of space with that framed wall.

Here is the look you wanted, but you needed more space. I have 99" vanity, 24"W x 48"H medicine cabinets and 3 sconces.

Also, any water source at your shower seat? I don't see it drawn in the plan?

Ideally there would be a second water source there with a hand held shower head on an adjustable bar.

Why would you sit cold and wet on a cold hard surface that is several feet away from the warm water? If you have no plan for a second water source, then skip the built-in bench and use a teak bench that can be moved near the water source. when needed.

I agree with chispa, but if you really don't want to give up the linen closet, here's what I think. Without knowing exact dimensions I don't know the answer to this, but figure out if you can do what she showed, a three sconce solution. There are a lot of skinny sconces that are popular right now which might work. Or, even if you're in love with the medicine cabinets you've chosen, see if you can find something 18" wide that you could use to buy yourself a couple more inches and make the three sconce solution work.

I understand when you get close to the end you get tired of the whole process, but the best solution is to get rid of the linen closet and substitute something smaller. IMO a double vanity should be at least 72" wide. Honestly, if this is the worst mistake (mistake might even be too strong a word) you have encountered during a new build you are doing well.

IMO a 64" vanity is not really large enough for 2 sinks and I do not like sconces for bathroom lighting I much prefer a good LED bath bar abobve each mirror . I do agree remove the linen strorage and do a lrager vanity if you must have 2 sinks whicih I have never needed in 60+ yrs of marriage , counter space trumps 2 sinks for sure IMO

    @wdccruise

1, 2. I don't have sink measurements. There is a cabinet but no countertop/sink yet. I just know it is rectangular and " Undermount Sink: Logan Square 12-765 ". I

    3. We have 9 foot ceilings.

What do you think of the idea of a recessed medicine cabinet with integrated LED lighting? This comes in a brushed gold finish.

@chispa Thank you for all the input.

The shower has 3 water source water at the bench, rain shower for husband and normail shower head for me. The plumbing isn't really in the plans.

My friend totally agrees with you, remove it all and have a floor to ceiling cabinet for a linen closet instead of a closet. Hunting down a contractor takes a bit of energy, but I also need built-ins, mud room, basement sinks installed, so maybe.

But, if not, still need medicine cabinet and sconces!

@kandrewspa I will look for skinnier medicine cabinets!

    "I don't have sink measurements."

If you don't know the dimensions of the sinks or their locations, you can't know how much space is available for sconces. For example, if the sinks are positioned close to the edges of the countertop (either because they're wide or are simply positioned away from the center of the countertop), there won't be room for sconces. Likewise, the sink information is necessary to determine what mirrors would fit.

IMO, without this information, the only safe solutions are a full-width mirror and single, wide vanity light.

Does your bath entry door open the direction shown (toward the toilet room door). That could be a conflict, especially at night.

I"d get a narrower linen cabinet. You will probably still not have room for sconces.

I suggest choosing medicine cabinets that don't have trim to match your faucets. When your faucet finishes go out of style (as everything does) and you replace them, you don't want to have to deal with the medicine cabinet too.

Not a pro but these 3 doors would make me crazy - if it were me i’d remove the door from the linen closet (it’s easy to make it look nice with stacked white towel and baskets to corral smaller items) - I might even be tempted to remove the door from the toilet room (if not, I’d prob put it on a self closing hinge so I didnt bash into it when entering the bathroom bc my DH left it open)

Perhaps a medicine cabinet with lights built in. Or sconces above instead of to the side.

@la_la Girl. I’m worried about those doors, I love the self closing hinge idea. I should have asked for a pocket door at the entry.

@chispa @JAN MOYER Thanks for the help. I will print the drawing and add my measurements, I think that will kelp a lot! I'm going to tape out the pottery barn cabinet and see how it looks.

Her vanity is 64" wide. The sinks are each 18-3/4" wide. She has only 64" - (2 x 18-3/4") = 26-1/2" of countertop left. Assuming the distance between the sinks is twice the distance between the sink and the adjacent wall, she has only 6-5/8" between the sink and the wall. Even if she buys 18-3/4" mirror, she'll have only 6-5/8" between the edges of the mirrors and the walls sconces...and cannot have three sconces if she wants them evenly spaced.

But this is all hypothetical. She needs the actual locations of the sinks to determine mirror widths and locations of electrical electrical boxes.

I just went and marked 16 x 30. There IS a lot of wall above the medicine cabinet. I guess we just try to ignore that.

Just tear out that linen closet and do a smaller linen cabinet and get more space for the vanity area. You are going to be using this every day for the next 10, 20 or more years!

Ignore all the busy stuff in the mirror area.

Look at Robern for medicine cabinets. They have taller models.

I would not want all that blank empty space above.

I doubt at 18 ” width, you will find taller than 42”

    No need to doubt! Here is a 16" x 48" and 19.25" x 48" by Robern.

But it is going to look too skinny and cramped in the current space available, so I would accept my mistakes/loses and be reworking the vanity area of this bathroom to really get what I want.

I assume @Michele Gallo and @galloml are the same person.

    "I just went and marked 16 x 30."

It appears you have two 30" vanities jammed together with 2" between the vanity and the wall on each side. If this is the case, then a single, centered sconce would be 15" from the center of each vanity (and its sink). You'd have 17" between the center of each vanity and its adjacent wall, but for all three sconces to be equidistant from the centers of the vanities, the outboard sconces would have to be only 2" from the wall. That might not look very good. Maybe it would be better to have two, not-skinny mirrors, no sconces, and a vanity light over each mirror.

I've lost count of these threads, where a desired "look" was not considered in the original p.l.a.n.

Below with Chispa medicine from above

The big problem with above? It's a 1300.00 SCONCE on a very undeserving vanity!!! It's a 3" mounting plate, And it assumes a sink center @ 17" from side walls!

Were I this Op, out of money? Out of patience for construction?

I'd tear the entire mess out, right now. Mess is the right word, and sorry to say that. It's a cheap "cheat" that ends up costing three times the money spent.

Can't do that? MUST have sconces? Give up the medicine, for something easy to find online, in a free hang mirror.

    To all who may pass.

    You want a Look?

    It begins with the width

It matters where the sink center will be, and must be married with the storage and plumbing in the vanity below.

The sconces matter, How wide, if a shade , no shade

You can not wait until a vanity is installed, and do a "what NOW"?

    Personally, and jmo.......

You don't EACH need a sink. You don't need to spit, wash, shave, all at the exact same moment. A shared MIRROR is the more important share.

    Want convenience?

These folks have more grooming junk than you can imagine, He's got hearing aids and batteries, she has a hundred lipsticks and multiple jars of La Mer and lord knows what else.. Do you see any of it? No...........ya don't.. 84" vanity....and no issue with the lighting, either, Not every bath needs a fortune in sconces.

The wrap of the towers at base? Yes, counter top wrap. so we do not rot out the base of the towers. . electrical inside for the tooth brush charge as we don't need to see that little appliance.

ONE sink and a lot of mirror., and no.....they aren't in there together.: )
