Replacing a vintage 40” range

I designed my kitchen around a vintage O’keefe & Merritt gas range. It’s a beauty, but persnickity and its pilot lights make my kitchen warmer that I’d like. Obviously, there aren't many options in this size. The options we are considering are completely different.

Option 1 - Lacanche Cluny in ivory. PROS - stunning and would fit nicely style and size wise; It would fit perfectly without modifications to my new cherry cabinetry snd Taj Mahal countertops.

CONS - extremely pricey and more than I need. electric ovens would require running a new electric line while gas ovens are shallower and have no broiler function, 6 months lead time

Option 2 - Wolf 36” gas range with 4 burners and griddle

PROS - more standard size, simple and straightforward, available now, it would look fine if a bit more industrial, no electrical work, I can find a used model for less

CONS - 1.5+ inch gaps on either side necessitating cabinet and countertop work. the counters will have additional seams if i use the 4’ remnant I have or I would have to purchase an entire new slab which is costly

I just cook normal family meals. I’ve had a variety of high end appliances and mid range appliances in the past. I want simplistic and not a lot of bells and whistles. Were it not for the renovations needed to a new kitchen, I’d choose the Wolf tomorrow. I don’t know if the counters can be remedied satisfactorily.

Ideas? Thoughts? Opinions?

photo 2 - with the Lacanche and planned paint change/furniture change

photo 3 - with Wolf though i wouldn't do the stainless backdrop and paint and furniture change though ai fixes the cabinetry/countertop issue more easily than reality

If the cabinets were custom, how about buying and inserting a 40" cabinet into the space, covering the cabinet with the countertop remnant, and installing a 36" gas or induction cooktop with a 30" electric wall oven below?

Ilve makes a 40" range that reflects a vintage look, at a lower price than LaCanche et al. I've never owned one and can't speak to the quality, just thought I'd mention it. (You'd want to see if you can get service locally.)

If you go with a 36" range, you could consider stainless gap covers. Looks like most of the off-the-shelf ones are narrower than what you need, but there are some on Etsy where you can specify the size you need. (link) This might give you a cleaner look than slivers of counter material.

You'd have to support the sheet metal with wood attached to the ends of the cabinets and fill the gaps in the cabinet fronts as well.

Doesn't Aga have a 42"? It would be easier to cut down cabinets and counter, than try to add them on.

Edit: Just looked at their website and they don't have that size. There was another brand that had a 42" range, which I didn't investigate further because it seemed like an odd size that no one else did.

Looked some more ... Aga used to have that size, but now they have standard sizes.

I do not wish to run a new electric line making gas ranges the only option. Ilve is pretty, but horrible. Only Lacanche makes a 40” worth considering qual quality wise. i cannot go up to a 48” range as my hood is 42”.

Today I found microtrim who can custom make stainless fillers to make a Wolf gr366 a little more doable. With the savings over Lacanche, i would possibly redo to full height Taj Mahal backsplash.

Microtrim examble below. Certainly easier and less pricey than all new tops.

AI mockup of possibility, though Microtrim does better filler than AI.

leaning toward the stainless filler and new backsplash Taj with a used or even a new Wolf gr366 to save a boatload. I also think cooking on Wolf is better suited to our family.

FYI, slab backsplash added behind the range will push the range forward, so make sure you measure and mock it up before ordering slabs.

@chispa - Yes, I have space behind the vintage range now, so it will work. I’m not opposed to a nice tile, but that will require removing the current 4” backsplash anyway.
