Bathroom remodel

last month

We are about to demo this bathroom and l need help redesigning it...This is the hall bathroom that our 2 kids use and also that guests use when at our home. Looking to keep it clean and modern but also fun! We are replacing the tub, wanting new tile for the wall and the floor and new vanity. Not looking to spend too much on the vanity but one that will last. Struggling with this small space! Would really appreciate any guidance!

I'd keep it all white with a floating vanity,

tone on tone tiles, texture, rather than color patterns for a calm look. you can always add the fun with colored towels, and a shower curtain you can change out at a whim.

this is a nice example of complimentary tiles options... (the toilet rool on the toilet side of the vanity, LOL)

Demo comes after all the new items have been delivered because lead times for delivery may be weeks to months.

Demo comes after the items have been delivered and checked. After waiting on the tub, an extra guy was hired to help get it up the stairs, then it was opened to find a nice-sized chip, that clearly happened before it was packed in the first place. Had to wait for another, and hire an extra guy again.

Why are you replacing the tub? It looks fine?

For the vanity, get one with a bank of drawers on each side, so much better than two little drawers with doors below.

With kids sharing, I would look at using a large medicine cabinet, recessed into the wall. You can store lots of everyday items in them and free up the drawers for larger items and also keep counters clear.

If you have a cabinet shop build your vanity you have more options to customize and get more storage.

I had this one built for my powder room and it has 4 good sized drawers. The plumbing had to be lined up in the middle and it took the plumber a bit more work, but nothing that hard.

It is hard to photograph because it is stained dark and there are no windows in the powder room!

Here it was during construction, so you can see the large drawers and space in the middle.

You won't regret spending a bit more time and budget to maximize storage.

    Thank you so much!!

I saw this article and this bathroom is similiar to mine. What if we did something like this? https://www.houzz.com/magazine/48-square-foot-bathroom-converted-into-a-calming-oasis-stsetivw-vs~184007291

There's no reason you can't do something just like that in your own bathroom. I think flooring with no grout as you show it would make for much easier cleanup with kids. It's just a matter of finding tiles and a vanity you like. Is the tub worn and needing to be replaced?

yes, you can do that. look at Bedrosians tile. they have that same longer, thinner type of subway.

as for the vanity, you can find some good deals on FB marketplace, or craigslist, or offer up. Also try Builders Surplus.

If you demo the room yourselves (after you get all your items ready) you'll save at least a 1000 or so.

make sure you do large tiles on the floor w/1/32 grout lines. easier clean up. I like the porcelain terrazzo tiles.

the expense for what you want will be the tiling job. make sure you get good references. and also make sure to ask how they're going to waterproof. I would urge you to research this yourself so you'll know what's correct. can't tell you how many people have come back on here w/sub standard waterproofing issues.

It's either tar paper and waterproof membrane behind the cement board, OR, coat the cement board w/a waterproofing agent like Redgard. NEVER both!

make sure you get that niche measured properly so they don't have to make tiny cuts into the tile. it takes some math to get it figured just right, but it can be done. people don't think about that.

you see how this is perfectly placed so they didn't have to cut any tiles around it??

we had same experience as @bpath - two of our fixtures were cracked when uncrated, and we had waited months , so frustrating and wasteful

When you say you are replacing the tub do you mean with a new tub or are you doing a shower only? Is the flooring staying? What does the rest of your home look like? Style? Modern? Traditional? Coastal? Colors? You say you want it to be fun.......fun with color? fun with wallpaper? fun with tile layout? What features besided new and reasonable does the vanity need to have? drawer storage? cabinet storage? Extra durability? Pull out step for small children?

This is all SO helpful! Thank you!! We are replacing the tub with a new tub. This one is pretty worn out. We would do new flooring too. No wallpaper. Something pretty that will be in style for a while? I like all white bathrooms but by fun I mean I think we want some color. Simple, modern, midcentury, earthy colors. I've been looking around at vanities and i think I need 36-37 inch and I liked the idea of drawers instead of only cabinets. No step stool needed. My kids are elementary so something to grow with them. I like wooden vanities.

A Natural vanity, neutral floor tile, earthy or bold tub surround tile, and a fun lit mirror/medicine cabinet! Here are two of our favoites.

Building code will dictate the size of your vanity. It needs to be 15" from the center of the toilet to the edge of the vanity. The same is true for the tub-15" from the center of the toilet to the tub. The color of the vanity you choose will be dependent on the color of tile you decide one. If you want to keep it neutral and light, I think a wood vanity would be nice to bring in some warmth. Something like this has nice big drawers and also room on the side for cleaning products.
