Interesting use of wallpaper

last month

I love many elements of this home--the exterior is perfection, IMO. The original woodwork, transoms, ceilings, stairway--all gorgeous. That hidden door on the second floor is fun. I'm not a fan of the kitchen, because, even with all the doorways, there could have been a better layout. And I would not have chosen that cabinet color.

But what I cannot decide on is the use of wallpaper in the foyer and upper hall. I like the paper itself, just not sure of the placement. Does it read, "We only wanted subtle focal points" "We had to place it where we could install ourselves" or "We couldn't fully commit"?

I've avoided wallpaper my adult life after a horrendous battle removing a 1970s installation in a previous fixer-upper. But I'm coming around to the idea again. I can't decide if I like it this way, or not. What do you think?

My thoughts exactly. Beautiful home! I’m not really a fan of the wallpapers or many of the other paint, etc choices. Nothing wrong with them, it’s subjective of course, just not my style.

Interesting mix of high and low material choices. As to the wallpaper placement, I think areas with a stairwell are always tricky when considering where to stop and start, but I think they should have added paper to the adjacent foyer walls or skipped the paper on the ground floor.

    Gorgeous original features.

The bones are incredible, the wood work, windows - man that dining room curved window, I've never seen anything like it. The wallpaper is a gaudy miss. The furniture seems like a staged job.

Yes, agree about the shade of blue in the kitchen cabinets and all the wallpaper choices are disappointing.

I love the brown and white wallpaper and the blue and orange paper. The shiny blue damask, not so much. And the kitchen cabinet color 👎🏻👎🏻

As to the furniture being staged, I wonder if that may contain the answer to the odd placement of wallpaper in some areas? Perhaps the paper was placed to accent or accomodate pieces of furniture, wall hangings or artwork that, when removed, makes the paper look superfluous or ill conceived.

I really liked the beige/brown floral too - it's lovely, IMO.

I think the house has enough architectural detail on its own and the wallpaper, ceiling treatment, etc., is too much and is distracting. I would simplify, then move in!

I like wallpaper and I have used it as an accent wall. But the placement of the wallpaper is wrong, and it doesn't look like the background matches the paint color which makes it look even more off. Especially that strip in front of the bed is just wrong.

I guess what also bothers me is the house is very victorian, so if you are going to wallpaper, it should be done more completely so it better echoes the past. Yes it did lead to very dark rooms, but if that's what you're going for, then do it. Otherwise, especially if you're selling, don't go there.

And don't get me started on those awful blue cabs in the kitchen. Ugh.
