I planted two grasses at our last house, and loved cutting them back in the spring. Every year I got to be amazed all over again at their regrowth!

But only six of them had much height, the Karl Forster. You have a much bigger job!

Gorgeous. We are still under snow cover, which I dont' mind since we missed a few storms while we were in the Caribbean.

Hard work you describe but very satisfying results.

I need to remember this grass for use when planned expansion is completed.

@bpath I have 7 Karl Foerster . They never get very big, thank goodness! I made the mistake of improving the soil where the Nothwinds are. Don’t do that! Their root ball after a couple years is easily 30-50#! I have a lot of different grasses, the deer leave them alone 😳.

@mtnrdredux_gw 80’s here! Crazy. Weather is completely messed up. Rain later then winds then by next weekend back to 30’s at night.

@lisaam - I love grasses. it is just a lot of maintenance. I have so many different kinds but like I said a above none get as big as the North Winds and depending on weather they fall over, which they are not supposed to do. It is because I made the mistake of improving the soil. Put crappy dirt where you plant them otherwise they are a lot of work.

I prefer Karl Foerster feather grass. it is beautiful in Fall

I had a fence like that at a former house and miss it a lot. My late DH built it; the new owners tore it all down.

Oh, don't remind me of what's soon to come. Altho I cut back most everything in Fall, so don't have much of that to do in Spring, except for those plants that normally are cut back in March. As for grasses, I rarely cut back my zebra grass down in the corner of the orchard. It's too much work!! ha Then I have to look at a mess every year. There's also Virginia Creeper intertwined through it. You did a tremendous job on your grasses - can I hire you?

Looking great, C! And I feel your pain! We’ve been working on cutting back ours for a couple of weeks off and on. I have 2 grasses, one at each end of a long brick retaining wall. They don’t get huge being in a bit of shade and DH helps me cut those back exactly as you do it. I only have a couple of hydeangeas left to cut back (running a little behind on that) but it will be ok and I plan to do it as soon as I’m back home.

I divided a lot of iris last year. I do have some daylilies to divide but hopefully can get that done next week also. It’s always something!

@OutsidePlaying 3 more hrs today. Did the whole front for the 2nd pass . All the grasses out there and the perennials that needed cutting back . Did the side yard on one side .

I still have the other side beds and the 2 big beds at the back between the parking area and the patio.

My bulbs are amazing! The 150 allium bulbs I planted are coming up after all this rain and I transplanted a LOT of bulbs from a friend.

We have a neighbor who is a Master Gardener and he is moving! He is having several of us come and dig up whatever we want. I am very excited to get tons of free plants!

We have a group of deer coming through at night, eating all the acorns I suspect!

There will be lots of perennials. They have been renting a house up our street for over 7 years. The landlady let them plant up a lot of the space but wants every inch returned to lawn!

His wife worked at our local Forest Reserve which is a teaching arbiretum 100 acres. It has extensive gardens and she has brought home tons of stuff over the years. It will be a major job onecway or another. c

Jealous…I am eager for gardening season. We are still pretending to be snowbirds but my friend walked by my house and sent me this evidence that the snow is still there (but about half as much as there was when I left!).

And that’s right, we still have our xmas lights up! We keep them up for most of the winter. They’re white and fairly subtle and they are cheerful on the dark evenings.

Another bed done and the tarp completely full again , city emptied it this morning. 3 1/2 hrs .

I ordered 7 yrds of mulch today. they said probably Wednesday . I use a pitchfork and two wheelbarrows. One more bed to go and some weeding to do. Then spread mulch.

Redid these rocks. Moved added thick cardboard, will now add gravel and then mulch on the bed side.

The bed in the distance is the, last sort of , because I have what I call my ” bed in a bed in a bed“. It is a flower bed in a flower bed inside a metal Revolutionary War bed frame and I need to redo it.

Dog sitter sent me this pic from our back yard today! Almost safe to go back, haha.
