Did you have to reinforce the gutter to handle ice buildup in the winter?

    yes, that is recommended since the ice buildup makes the chain heavier. You can do so by purchasing a gutter adaptor kit. www.monarchrainchains.com sells adaptor kits for that purpose.

    Is there much backsplash and mess from the chain? I'd love to use them but worried about keeping it tidy.

    Rain Chains are an open system of transportation of rain water and in case there is stormy weather, wind etc there will be splashing - but that adds to the beauty of the rain chain.
