Paypal small deposit

I received a deposit of three cents into my Paypal account along with a message that didn't make much sense along with a phone number and a purported link to Paypal. Apparently this scam attempt is rising in popularity, and the scammers hope you will use either the phone number or link, both theirs, to report this, and they collect personal information when you call/write.

I did report this to the real Paypal and at their recommendation changed my password, and they refunded the three cents back to whoever sent it because I told them it was unauthorized and not part of any of my transactions.

After doing some research I found there is also a scam where a larger amount is deposited, and the depositor gets in touch and says it was an error and would the account holder just send it back using a different method to refund. Then the depositor opens a Paypal case and Paypal also refunds them, so the account holder is out their money.

There sure seem to be a lot of scammers out there.

Wow, thats a new one. I recently got a very legitimate looking invoice to renew my subscription to Geek Squad which Ive never used in my life. All this constant attempts at scams as well as AI is very tiresome.

And check your credit card/debit card statements for small charges. Scammers will 'test' the account before making a big move.

I just received a deposit of one cent in Philippine pesos from a place I'd never heard of. I submitted a fraud report to Paypal but they responded that it looked like an authorized transaction and they closed the case. I called their customer service number but got no response. I did change my password but I think this is very irritating and unsettling.

I stopped using PayPal a long time ago. As noted above they are unreachable and/ or unhelpful when there is an issue and they are used as a scammer‘s freeway into your personal info. I got ripped off by a lumber supplier a number of years ago and even with all my proof the PP folks were completely useless. My revenge was a huge writeup with documentation and photos on Google reviews . This was 6 yrs ago. I received a ” like” notice on this review again the other day. I hope it put him out of business.

Heather I appealed Paypal's authorized ruling and they immediately reversed it to unauthorized. Seemed like a lot of work for 3 cents, but my reasoning is that an authorized ruling would bolster the scammers should they try it, or something else, again.
