Noritake Rose Pattern China - Free to Good Home!

last modified: 28 days ago

Do you want a set of China my dad bought in Japan in the 1950s?

Noritake Rosetta Pattern #5285 - made in Japan. The only "catch" is that you'd have to collect it yourself. I don’t trust my packing skills to mail it. My father purchased the set for my grandmother while he was stationed in Japan in the mid-1950s.

The dishes feature a white china base with inner and outer gold bands (and some accents). The floral motif is a pink rose, surrounded by green leaves and pink buds. It is an elegant, vintage set. All but one piece in great condition, especially considering it is now about 70 years old! Perfect for dinners, luncheons, and garden parties. Have seen the 7-piece place setting going for over $160 – ONE setting! This is a nearly complete 7-piece place setting for TWELVE (or 9-10 for the bowls) and INCLUDES some of the more rare serving
pieces. Includes
12 dinner plates
12 salad plates
12 bread and butter plates
12 saucers
10 small bowls (dessert?)
10 coupe soup bowls (1 is chipped/cracked)
12 tea cups
1 gravy boat, with attached under plate

Some serving dishes.

If you would like this, let me know right away. If I don't hear from anyone right away, I will probably donate to local Goodwill. I have a sentimental attachment to this set (for obvious reasons -- both family -- and ROSES!), but I just don't use it, and I would love it to somewhere to bring happiness to others.

Soon-ish? I boxed it up & put it in my car, but could wait for someone who really wanted it but couldn’t get it immediately. Also - I might be driving to Ventura area on Sunday…if someone wanted to meet me partway!

Deborah, as you know, I operate an orphanage for innocent china whose owners have callously abandoned the poor things.......Cackle.

Deborah, before you give it away, you should contact Vintage Fox here in Santa Barbara. She has sold a bunch of collectibles of a good friend of mine and she's super honest and great. She'll come to you if it's really that valuable. I can't imagine why you'd not try to get a reasonable return on it. She's Ashley Fox on Chapala. 805-453-7936. website: https://thevintagefoxsb.com

Susan, Deborah should give you a commission for all that info.

Deborah, maybe I should sell your china on eBay for you. Back in the nineties I sold all kinds of antiques on that site, when it was fun and strictly auctions. No photos, checks or money orders only. Those were the days. The Luddite, Diane

I would concur; you really *should* look into the value of that set. Sentimentality notwithstanding, the financial value of a full set of discontinued china of that type might surprise you.
You could buy a helluva lot of rose plants for those! 😉

Not saying it would sell for nearly this much, but...

Susan - the boxes are in my car because I went down there! Her sister was there, and told me to text Ashley, which I did, and she said she has too much right now.

Thanks, all for your advice. I tried a consignment place & Craigslist. Don’t want to ship. Vintage Fox says it’s hard to get good prices for China these days. I’d rather the set go to someone who will enjoy it than someone who will give me peanuts & resell bits at a time. I

I inherited china from my mother and it cost $1,900 to ship it from Minnesota to Oregon by UPS. It is still in boxes in my wine cellar. It can be a problem.

Sheila, that china must have been shipped by uniformed butlers. If it's still in boxes, do you know if it arrived safely without damage? Diane

I don't even know, Diane, but I bet it is intact. I tried to offer it to a local Minnesota relative but her father declined the gift. It is in 19 large boxes. It is pretty but I like Deborah's (DD) better.

Well, Sheila, I think I like yours better. It looks like Haviland Limoges. Did your mother have an antiques shop? I think you'd better start one. After the Canadian trip, of course. Diane

Yes, you are correct Diane. My Mom inherited the set too. My Mom was not a gardener or artistic.

I agree with Diane. It looks like a fine collectible Haviland porcelain set.

I wish I were closer. I do not have any sets except my every day white which was a wedding gift from my kind inlaws. I do not like accumulating things, but a vintage floral set would definitely be something I could appreciate.

Sheila your set is fantastic, you should pull it out and use it asap!

Deborah, so sad to hear that Ashley couldn't take it. While she has sold a bunch of collectible stuff for my friend over the past two years (including some china), I have had a feeling for quite awhile that china is now a tough sell because the collectors are dying off. I inherited a huge amount of pieces when my aunt died in 2002, and instead of doing the smart thing and putting it immediately on consignment or selling, I thought I'd do it myself or find a friend to do it. Stupid decision on my part. This includes a big collection of Royal Doulton dogs from the 50s and 60s, Lladro, etc. Last time I looked, the bull terrier alone was valued at $1500, but I'm afraid the market has dwindled since I last looked.
