Some wicked thorns there! Is that honeylocust on your own property, or did you see it somewhere else?

I came across this one (below) in Ohio last fall. Maybe honeylocust should have been named the "squirrel puzzle" tree ;)

arbordave, thanks for your pic, and my 1st pic was from facebook. I collected seeds from several different honeylocusts -- ones I have growing on my lot are thornless, but random chance has two I gave to my brother having some thorns. They are/were startling blood-red (an obvious visual warning to stay away!) -- I took this pic recently and the red has faded some, but still impressive, and I tell you, those thorns are as sharp as a hypodermic needle (I know)....

Those HL thorns are unbelievable, actually, in clusters!

I've read where they intensify over time.

Before I even knew about HL thorns, I started seeds collected from pods found on the ground, near Rochelle Illinois.

But I've been lucky, most seed started trees don't keep all the features of the cultivar, but I haven't had any thorns at all on my tree.

Is the var. inermis main difference the lack of thorns?

Beng, your picture above reminds me of my hawthorn tree that has 1-1/2-2" burgundy red thorns on all the branches like that.
