We installed a Kohler undermount Whitehaven single bowl sink when we remodeled this house. I like the size, color, and the off-set drain. We picked it because we wanted something different from the stainless sink we had in our previous house. I think it's attractive and easy to clean - it has 2 grates, the one on the side with the drain is smaller and has a cut out around the drain, so it is easy to use the disposal. The rounded sides slope to improve flow toward the drain, but it also slightly reduces the area of the sink bottom. The enameled apron has slight waves - so if you want a sleek look this isn't for you.

I do have one small grey mark about 1 1/2 inch long where the smaller grate rubs against the side of the sink - probably because we're not careful taking the grate out. You only see it when the grate is removed and I haven't bothered doing anything about it.

We had a great stainless sink in our last house - a 16 gauge, Franke undermount - not farmhouse. I loved that sink, it was indestructible. It wasn't shiny, I think the finish was called silk so it didn't really show scratches. We also used grates with it which helps keep it looking good. The Franke did look more commercial - but I loved it in that kitchen.

I would be interested in what sort of sink your mom's was that did not show these lines? Plastic of some sort??? Barkeepers friend has always removed them for me. Not scratches persay more like mar marks from metal pans. There are white materials they use for sinks that won't mar... Stainless was the response to this issue back in the day. White came back around as a fashion statement. There's a reason why inventions happen and these marks are why white sinks fell out of favor.

I have the IKEA Domsjo farmhouse sink, and I think I've found a great solution for those marks. I sprinkle my sink with Barkeepers, squirt Dawn dish liquid all over, and then spray or drizzle lemon juice liberally. NOW WALK AWAY. I leave it for at least an hour. When I come back, I'm able to scour away the scratches that would not previously disappear.

Quick update - used Bon Ami and a damp paper towel to remove that little mark on the side of the sink. Easy

Are there different qualities? Different thicknesses?

I've used Barkeepers friend- liquid & powder. Had hubs scrub as well, he's stronger, but they don't budge.

I HATE those scratches or marks, whatever they are.

arcy, it was a long time ago... I couldn't tell you. It was probably cast iron/porcelain, but it wasn't plastic. Later in life, after we'd moved to another house, Mom would lament that the "new" sink just wasn't as good as the old one.

I have a Kohler Whitehaven, too, and I scrub it with BKF, rinse, then spray with diluted bleach. My problem is not the grey marks, but coffee stains that my DH leaves when he makes coffee.
