SOS - Need quick help with cabinet color!

last modified: last month

I need to select a paint color for new cabinets in my kitchen. I am keeping the existing floorplan, but new cabinets, new column fridge+freezer in stainless steel, all appliances stainless steel. I am keeping the walnut floors. The peninsula and counters are in Calacatta Michaelangelo dolimite, slab picture attached; we chose it because the gold/brown vein will highlight the walnut floors, but it does have a lot of gray and mostly my house is beige/brown. Peninsula will be all one level counter height. Kitchen is open to family room also attached. I would like to lighten the kitchen so it is not as dark, but not a huge fan of white cabinets (but could be convinced). I need advice on cabinet color that goes well with the slab and the floors. Had been thinking beige before getting the slabs which have more gray. Any advice on walls also appreciated, I think I may need to go more "greige" in family room paint/decor to pull it all together? Help, please! Appreciate it

Your post is confusing. Who is the manufacturer of your new cabinets, and what color choices are available? You have committed to the Calacatta Michaelangelo dolimite for counters because of the floor. Wall color is involved, for sure, because what is on the walls, sure doesn't work with the Calacatta Michaelangelo dolimite.

IMO, I would keep what you have now and redocorate the adjoining rooms. Right now I see the kitchen cabinets as the best of the entire area.

I would save up until I could remove those weird 1990 soffit-tray ceilings. The rooms would feel and look much more spacious and open without them.

i am not a fan of the dark cabinets and dark floor, so I would go with acwarm white for the cabinets.

From your photo, it appears you gave limited natural light.

In choosing a white you need to factor in your house’s exposure.

i would start by looking at the top selling BM and SW most popular whites.

I agree with everyone's comments--the layout is not optimal, those ceilings are strange, and you are going to spend a lot of money for not a lot of benefit. I'd go back to square one and get a better plan.

Your walnut floors are gorgeous. It's hard to comment on cabinet paint since there are no door samples or paint colors placed with the dolomite stone (side by side and also perpendicular since they will be in different planes). All surfaces must either blend or contrast with the others-floor, countertop and cabinets.

I'd opt for painted cabinets in your kitchen since you have so much space covered by cabinetry. There is quite a bit of gray in the stone's movement so choosing a creamy white will need careful selection.

Wall paint can be changed at some point to match the cabinets. Ditto chispa's comment about the soffits with the pot lights on the perimeter and above the penisula. That would be my first directive to remove them and redo the lighting plan in a kitchen reno.

we chose it because the gold/brown vein will highlight the walnut floors,

Your floors do not need highlighting. They are very dominant. Instead, your countertop selection is going to drive the cabinet color and the wall color for your kitchen and adjoining room, and potentially any adjoining rooms and hallways, and perhaps your upholstered furniture. Do you absolutely love the countertop enough for it to be the driving force behind all color choices in these two rooms?

This is a busy slab. You have a ton of countertops. Do you think your kitchen can sustain that much movement on all the countertops?

Think about these things before you base so much on this stone that sounds like it was chosen to highlight a floor that doesn't need highlighting.

Can you post some inspiration pics in the comments section of what you'd love a new kitchen to look like?

cleaning up/ AKA "editing" your space would help. Here is a fresh look which you could achieve. I might box up some of the "things" so you can really see the bones of your spaces and make the best choices for your vision..do you have a vision? inspiration pics? can you get the appliances in first? can the counter sit wherever it is and wait a bit before you instruct them for the cutting and installation ? Your space is large ....get the details of any changes for the long term acc to a vision .

clean looking/ fresh space.... new chairs....paint might be the answer but are you talking new cabinets or paint what you have?

^ agree - I would first strip the space down and remove everything from counters and cab doors and then give it a fresh appraisal

I think yu need to choose the cabinet color then the counter and honestly I love the counter but not your reason for choosing it. The floors are awesome no need to highlight them . So many things dated in that space it is hard to help.I hope at least you went drawers for those base cabinets . So first the cabinet color you like then the counter choice .TO really redo a poor look with new cabinets but no change in layout seems to me to be a huge mistake. The floors can be matched but a poor layout does not get better just because you hav enew cabinets; All that celing stuff needs to go for sure , you could do so much better if you just bite the bullet and get a real face lift.

If you are buying new cabinets without changing the layout of the kitchen I would keep the existing cabinet which seem to be in good shape until you can do a complete makeover. In the meantime, replace your appliances as planned, paint the entire room in a creamy white and it will look fresh and bright with your dark cabinets and floors. Replace all window treatment, and declutter the kitchen and family room. Lower your TV, it's much too high. You also seem to have too much furniture try to relocate some pieces.
