Are you sure the ledge isn’t cement?

I am not sure. Ours will be paint. Just trying to get a similar look.

if you want a metallic look using paint, I would do a zinc-look treatment. I did it w/a dresser top awhile back.

I stained the wood w/ebony stain (if you want it darker black I'd use an aniline dye in ebony first, and then when that's dry go over it w/the ebony wood stain. you will get a very black stained wood.

this is the aniline dye on red oak. (its very simple to use. mix powder w/hot water)

(obviously there is sanding w/diff grits involved before and after application. I'm just showing you how to get a blacker base to work with)

and the finished door after the black stain and wood oil, also in ebony. I wanted it super black.

If you want it deep black, I'd go this route, and then do the metal effects or faux zinc paint on top of it. for this I'd use a brush, metal effects paint, and wax (wax and water gives the metallic look to the wood)

Done on a blacker base, you should get the darker color you want.

Of course you would try any of these on a spare piece of wood first.

This is great! That 5th pic is really what I want! So you just paint it the color we like, rub wax on it, then spray it with water water?

What kind of wax do you use?
