Need desperate help selecting new outdoor wall lanterns

Am having a difficult time deciding on new wall lanterns which will replace my current outdoor wall lanterns ( 21" T x 9.5" W x 12.75" D) which are malfunctioning. Would REALLY appreciate it if you could tell me which would be your first choice and which one would be your second choice. ( The roofing on the house has recently been replaced to black asphalt shingles) Thanks so much for your help!

@Lyn Nielson Was hoping to stay under $200 per lantern...so $400 for the pair. Sorry I wasn't clear.

    $399. for a pair.

    I prefer #3 and #1 as a second option.

I prefer #1 for a Cape Cod style house. Then #2. #3 feels too Craftsman-like to me and #4 and #5 feel a bit too Colonial.

@Old Home Restorer I really appreciate your detailed reasoning behind the wall lantern options you recommended. I tend to agree with you and found it very helpful in my decision making process. Thank you, as well, for your alternative wall lantern suggestion.

@Old Home Restorer Do you think this light fixture would work? It is 20.9" tall and 7.9" wide. Thanks again!

@Old Home Restorer...here's one more I thought might work. It is 19.25" tall x 7.25" wide. I really appreciate any feedback!

    #3....then #1

Consider the storybook style lights. Since your house looks like a 20s-30s English cottage style, which is a mix of other styles, I wouldn't feel too restricted by any one style. I love the first one you posted on 3/26. Did you make a decision?

I like both of the options you posted on 3/26! I’m partial to the first one myself, which I think would bring a touch of whimsical storybook style to your facade….but I think the second option would also work well in keeping with the overall stateliness of your home. I think it just boils down to a matter of personal preference, and I’m guessing you’d be able to return whatever you choose in the event it feels off upon arrival!

@Old Home Restorer thank you . Really appreciate your feedback.

@Hellogardener thank you for your feedback! Have not made a decision yet… am leaning more towards the storybook lantern as well.

I have an extremely similar home to you and very similar exterior lights to your original. I’ve always thought they were fine but wanted to change them out. Of your options, I did really like number 3 bc they were the longest and my reason for not liking my own lights is that I think they are slightly too small for my house.
Of the two more recent ones you posted, the second one is very pretty, and would look lovely with your house. But, I do think the first ones are more unique and playful- my way of selecting would be whichever one is longer and easiest to replace the bulb.
Eager to see what youve chosen so please update us!

@Jen D really appreciate your feedback! I really like the last 2 lanterns I posted. I am going to purchase (1) lantern of each and hold it up on my house before making a final decision. I hope I like the storybook-looking one because I feel it has a lot of character and it is 20” long. 🤞

I would love to know the manufacturer of the storybook looking fixture. I would love it for my house! Thanks!

I like both light fixtures and after they are up you will hardly notice what they look like.

MORE Important - Take off the horrid FAKE shutters! They cheapen the house! They are made for mobile homes and cheap houses, not for beautiful nice old brick houses like yours! Thank you in advance for doing that.

They have similar lanterns to those in pictures for under $100 at Menards and are good quality.

First choice 3 second choice 1- i think the larger size in both work best

be sure you use a bulb that is 2700k or lower

    Tia Mia thanked jrice5528

Color temperature of the light is as important as the fixture

3000k and higher looks like a Walmert parking lot

I like the grill on #2 and then the length of #4. I dislike #1 the most. The new pics of the rounder ones are interesting.

@terrib962 keen eye you have! This is an old photo... I also hated the shutters and they were removed a long time ago. The house looks much better without them.

The storybook lanterns are so pretty! So much character and I think they'll fit in nicely with your home's style. I disagree on the 2700k for the bulbs though. I find it to be very yellow. I like 3000k for outside.

Last year, we accidently did scientific research on LED lighting fixtures.

Back in 2019, we installed three sconces at the front of the house. These lighting fixtures are on 24-7-365.

We installed a matching sconce at the back of the house. This lighting fixture gets turned on and off once, maybe twice, a day. Maybe it stays on a few minutes, occasionally a few hours.

In October, 2025, we noticed that the fixture at the back of the house was really dim.

The sconce was no longer available to purchase a replacement, so partner removed the custom socket and replaced it with a "generic" socket that takes a regular LED lamp and it's back to bright.

One year equals 8,760 hours. Six years equals 52,560 hours.

So. Our conclusion is that the "50,000 hours of maintenance free use" is for fixtures that get turned on/off many times.

We'll be watching the front of the house to see how many years we get out of those fixtures.

If you decide on a two bulb fixture, get incandescent candle bulbs, 25 Watts each. Amazon still sells incandescent candle bulbs. LED looks awful in outdoor fixture IMO

We recently changed our outdoor fixtures as well - similar dark carriage style lanterns. The big issue for us was to have clear - not wavy - glass. And some sizes looked downright silly once we put a ruler alongside the exposed wires. My only advice is don’t go too small, and get strong bulbs if you choose the wavy glass.

Here are our new ones: a closeup from the website, and how they look installed.

Lovely entry! I like #5. They don't create weird shadows & they are nice and clean looking

Tia Mia thanked Happy Home Services Inc

Size matters! Whichever fixture you choose make sure it's large enough. Lighting that is too small makes the entry look off balance. You have 2 lights so they should be 1/4 the height of the door. I replaced my outdoor lights 2 years ago - I cut a piece of cardboard the size of the light I was considering and tacked it to the house to get an idea of how it would look. Very happy I went with the larger size.

Also, not in your post so please ignore me if you'd like - would you consider painting your door? The red door with the red brick is not maximizing either. Maybe a deep green (the complement to red) or a dark gray/charcoal.

Lovely entry!! It has so much interest!

@golfer32 Really appreciate your input. I have been looking at door colors for a while and have almost decided on the perfect color: SW Rookwood Sash Green. As far as the wall lantern, my door is 84" tall and I'm thinking of going with a fixture that is 21" tall. I'm hoping that size will work. You didn't mention the ugly shutters🙃...they've been gone for a while( this is an older photo of the house) House looks much better without the non functioning, faded shutters. Painting the door and hanging the wall lanterns be next!

I love the door color choice. I had a brick house that was similar to yours and painted mine almost the exact same color. I got lots of compiments on it.

    @katinparadise thank you!🤗

A 21" light should be perfect! The green you're looking at for your front door is gorgeous! Get a peel-n-stick sample and look at it during various times of the day. Your door gets a lot of sun so a darker color won't look washed out. I didn't mention the shutters bec I saw that you had already taken them down! :-)

I would disqualify 3 as I had similar that became endless red wasp nests home until I was forced to change fixture out

@Patricia Colwell Consulting you had mentioned you felt the wall lanterns needed to be longer. My front door is 84" tall and as far as I understand, the rule of thumb for light fixtures flanking an entry is that they should be 1/4 the height of the door? That would put my fixtures at 21" min. height. The lantern selections I had posted ranged from 20"-23". Is there a specific lantern, other than the ones I posted, which you feel would be a good candidate? I appreciate any feedback.

I actually don’t mind the ones you have, but putting plaques behind them would bring them out more. Even tho the flatter ones are pretty, I feel like ur entrance is a little flat. If it’s in ur budget, I would add a portico over that area. That would really bring some architectural detail to the front of the door & also shield you or visitors from rain or snow

@HU-169642121 Appreciate your feedback. I wish I could afford a portico - have actually looked at metal canopies on this website but wasn't sure if appropriate for my home. https://designyourawning.com/blogs/news/beautiful-door-awnings
