We have an insinkerator and I do love it. They aren’t allowed in new builds where I live now though as they create grey water

I hate them in my new house there was one here and my plumber will remove it when he comes to do more outdoor taps.

Just know that not all Insinkerators alike. I just had to replace my old one with a new one. The new one (Insinkerator Badger Series) is SO MUCH noisier. If there is a noise rating on the box, I didn't know to look for it.

@melindas1977 - thanks for the heads up on the Badger series noise. You can buy a small white plastic disk that fits in the drain that significantly reduces noise. It works for those disposers controlled by a wall switch. They usually cost under $5. Like this:

No help with a model. Be sure they are still allowed if you live in a major city in Canada, as they have been prohibited in many (ours included) due to their environmental impact.

Do not get a Badger, builder-grade carp. Get a 1 hp Insinkerator.

Okay, this is all nonsense.

Garbage disposlals don't cause problems with plumbing - putting massive amounts of food waste in them might marginally increase the "organic load on wastewater systems" but not the disposal themselves. If you aren't composting with a garbage disposal, not having one isn't going to change that.

Fats, oils and grease on the other hand, cause big problems for your drain and municipal sewer systems..

What's more, Insinkerator is a brand name that has probably 80% of the US market. It includes the Badger line, Power line and the Evolution line. The Power and Evolution line includes more soundproofing and such.

You generally don't want to grind up massive amounts of garbage - so you don't need a super heavy duty model. A 3/4 hp is fine. You run these things for a few seconds, so don't go crazy on paying too much for sound insulation or power. Things like bones and corn cobs should not be going down the drain in the first place - so no need to buy a disposal that can do that.

Install a decent one, but don't waste much money on "the best". Put most of the garbage in the trash or compost and avoid putting any oil, fats or grease down your drain.

Thank you all for the comments! We ended up getting the Insinkerator Evolution line. We are not planning to put anything wild and crazy in it. Fingers are crossed that it runs well and is indeed on the quieter side.

Thanks, apple_pie_order, for the info on the disposal stopper. I will definitely be looking into that. I don't use my disposal a lot, but it's crazy how loud this thing is.
