Rambling thoughts:

- Without seeing your space (and the other lighting), I'd guess 3 medium pendant lights /equally spaced.

- A good way to check: Get a packet of balloons, blow up 3 (approximating the size of your pendants) and hang them from the ceiling with painter's tape. If they won't hang straight, tape a few pennies to each one. Stand back and squint. See if three look right.

- I'd think twice about a 48" wide island. It's wider than necessary and hard to reach the middle to clean. If you stick with this, be certain the overhang side is very well supported.

Post a photo of the space. Common for 3 pendants and sometimes just 2 large ones. Depends on what else is going on for lighting and aesthetics.

center one and hang the others 12" in from the edge of the countertop.

island is 48 x 120" and the pendants I like are 16" x 16", all other lighting will be recessed in the kitchen. Is 16" large?

^^^ . A bit dated..........: ) sizing, and You have not enough context. Anything on the island? What is the ceiling height? What is behind the island.......what is the look and feel of the kitchen? What 16" pendant, btw??

As to size.........any bwlow, knowing nothing else

Depends on the size of the pendants! If they are smaller, 3. If they are larger 2. You could also do 2 small "Chandeliers" that are simpler with a 10' island which usually scales in nice. Hope it helps!
