Gutter color help!

last modified: 12 days ago

We are building a white brick & white hardie home (all exterior is painted Swiss Coffee by Benjamin Moore) and i’m stuck on gutter color. Our roof is Weathered Wood by Certainteed.

If i could afford it, we’d do copper gutters. We have copper exterior lanterns. Now I’m torn between white gutters (or a color that would match our paint color), or bronze or maybe a musket brown color? I’ve also heard of people doing gutters to match the roof color (probably bronze) and downspouts to match the paint color (white/linen).

Any advice or phots are greatly appreciated!

So our soffit/fascia is white, but I had heard that gutters should match the roof color? and then downspouts match the paint color?

Here is a house with white soffit/fascia. They went with white gutters.

They also did white downspouts, but tried to place them where they came down next to white trim or columns.

What color gutters would you have used to matched the roof color?

+1 to @chispa /Gutters should blend - they serve a utilitarian purpose and aren’t an architectural element to highlight

fwiw we have white horizontal gutters to match the white fascia and tannish grey downspouts to match the house body color

Here is our exterior. so the gutters would go over the front porch. if we did gutters to match the roof color we’d go with bronze gutters and then do linen downspouts (closest white color) to match our white paint. or we could do linen gutters & downspouts

These have been our inspo pictures but of course these are copper gutters. though overtime i know copper can look bronze, whic is why i was considering bronze gutters & downspouts

To me, this does not look good. You end up with a stripe of fascia and stripe of gutter. Their gutters would have been better in white, and downspouts too.

This is subjective and there isn't a single way to do this.

Your house. If you like how that looks, no one will stop you!

Another variable is to "match" the soffit/fascia to the roof, giving the roof a chunkier profile and then you can use bronze/brown or dark gray gutters and match downspouts to the house color.

Neither is right or wrong, just a different look.

All white for an all white house.

Another variable ... in this one they painted the fascia dark and the soffit in the white house color. Matched gutters to fascia. Downspouts would have looked better in white.

    See, no real rules!

Can't go wrong with gutters made of copper, unless you ask your accountant.

I think it will look better with linen gutters and downspouts. However, as chispa has commented above, it's your house. If you like how the photo looks with copper gutters, you should install the gutter color that makes you happy.

However, I will caution that genuine copper gutters look very different compared to bronze or faux copper colored gutters. If you really like the look of homes with copper gutters, you should install real copper gutters - not gutters that you think will imitate the look of real copper gutters.

Maybe these are in the faux copper category... For $20 IDK... maybe a can of spray paint?

I cannot get on Instagram right now for some reason- and I do not have the app. So cannot investigate the situation.

Re-read what was said earlier. Most of the time homes do better if gutters and downspouts are not a FEATURE. Who wants every visitor who comes to your door to say 'Wow cool downspouts!?? Your home is saying white gutters and white downspouts.

I agree that most of the time homes look better with gutters and downspouts matching fascia and trim. In some case though having gutters and downspouts of a different color from fascia and trim can look quite good especially if leader heads are used (as I saw in one photo that was posted here). On your house I will suggest that contrasting gutters and downspouts might look quite good especially in a dark bronze color.

Base your decission on all sides of the house and not just the front. The location and color should be carefully considered in the design of the entire house, not just functionally placing downspouts (lipstick) on the house (pig).

Gutters and leaders are not a design feature. They should blend and disappear as much as humanly possible.

It is not a one-size-fits-all life.

I understand the idea that gutters, as a functional object, need not be highlighted. But I also understand that there are people who do highlight them, and that is a personal choice. Just like I understand that many folks on this board think that garage doors should always fade into the background- and never be highlighted. However, there are people who do highlight them - and FYI there are stylish carriage houses- and FYI there are various ways of living.

From my perspective: if I had an all white brick house, I would probably highlight the gutters and anything else I could think of highlighting.

I do agree with Mark- that the gutter color/finish choice should coordinate with the overall house design.

This is just my opinion, but I like the picture @chispa posted with the black fascia and soffits and gutters to match. To me, it makes the gables stand out from the house instead of sitting flat against it. Is there an option for soffit and fascia that's close to your roof color?

    Blend unless copper.

What about this option? gutters blend with roof color and downspouts blend with house color. is this weird to do?

That would seem to make sense- if it is adequately functional. And I would think would be a crowd pleaser here. If the whole idea is for them to blend in and to not see them, you are accomplishing that with this setup.

Btw, if you were considering authentic copper, except for the price tag- don’t necessarily rule it out. Although it will cost more on the front end, it could actually be a savings in the long run.

@Jennifer Knowles, that was my favorite combination. You just have to be sure that the fascia where you don't have gutters on the gables is the same color as the fascia with gutters. So it would look like this.
