Kitchen Island Challenge

Concerned about the kitchen island lighting. Island is 6'x4', celling height 9', designers proposed pendants were installed. Pendants are 20" wide, 20" tall, bottom is 34" above the counter (which is standard 36" height.) Pendants are centered side to side and front to back, cannot be separated further (skylights and joists impede.) Concerns are (a) overall esthetics and (b), and more importantly, how to install good functional lighting. Advice and opinions are much appreciated.

    way too big. over powering.

if it helps, my island is roughly the same as yours.

    these are 13"

there has to be clear space between. 19" is too large. with two pendants, 30" apart is a guideline. my island is just shy of 4' wide. the pendants are one foot apart. I obviously couldn't go wider.

does this look a bit better to you?

do you have a rendering of the countertop and how it's going to look?

Can you imagine cleaning those huge pendants?! Glad your considering changing them out...

    something with a little style...not too crazy..:0)

Kitchen lighting is layered. Task for no shadows and 450 lumens minimum for work zones. Ambient for the general space. And decorative is optional.

As previously mentioned - layer your lighting:

    • Under cabinet for task lighting along the counters
    • Overhead (usually recessed) for general & aisle lighting
    • Pendants for over the island
    • Other locations that have no cabinets above (e.g., over a sink) - pendants, sconces, etc.
    • All should be dimmable.

Keep in mind that while natural/window lighting is nice, it's only good during the day. At night windows are like black holes sucking the light out of the immediate area in front of them.

Depending on where you live, daylight may only be available in the late morning (after 7 am) and/or early evening (before 7pm or so).

With regards to the pendants your designer chose - they are much too big for your island!

Way too big, and way too unattractive even if they did fit. They overwhelm, and have a single bulb.

    Ceiling and electrical do over.

He can not use a pancake box, or run blocking between the joists?

    If not.....

A single box, and a linear fixture.! ( joists in the way ) lighter and airier.

    ,

    Or add a third box.

We can not help, unless you show a sketch of the island and exactly where the boxes are located over that island.

You may better off with three/ much smaller pendants than the designer selection.

You may love the look of the doors...... but they help to darken the kitchen. I would consider removing as you already have a very closed off kitchen.....and dim.

It's not the spacing it's the FIXTURES! Not seeing your kitchen as 'dim'. Your pictures have only natural light now so I would say once the lights are on it will be more than enough bright!! Sorry about the consensus on the fixtures--I hope you don't LOVE them...

Not every island has to have pendants over it and sometimes recessed lights are the best choice.

Designers sometimes pick weird things for their customers, just so they can have something different to photograph for their portfolio!

I think besides the pendants not working, you need more can lights over the working portion of your countertops.

Your kitchen has lovely bones and the cabinets look really nice. Love the door and the view to the outside. Make sure you have excellent under cabinet / task lighting because the overall / general lighting looks week - I see only 2 cans - but maybe there are more.

Scale the pendants down. Get something that will match your cab hardware finish and provide decent light - like a globe with some concentrated light below.

You can find something "different" that is also functional.

I agree that they're too large for the space and the single bulb will be harsh. Better something like Beth suggested.

What are you using for your countertops as I see nothing in place or prepped for support for the top. That will need something in the way of steel at this location I am sure.

The wasp nests aren't my favorite. Maybe they look better lit up.

I’d consider one elongated fixture over the island rather than several separate pendants. It would emphasize the length of the island, keep the ceiling looking cleaner, and give the kitchen a more contemporary feel.

I recently put together 8 modern designer-looking lights, including several elongated options that could work beautifully over an island. Most are around $100 but look surprisingly premium:
