Question for you...could the table/chairs be pulled out and turned horizontally to the 3 window bay? It would make for easier seating and change your choice of a chandelier.

for me, the light is a bit too high, bottom 30" to 36" off the tabletop.

I don't care to light up the ceiling, rather shine the lights down on the tabletop.

When selecting a light fixture for dining I prefer the light directed DOWN on the table not up at the ceiling. I want the light to make the food and tableware sparkle and that requires light which is focused on the table.

Additionally, your current fixture has bulbs that are too cool for the room IMO.

Finally, turning the table might be a very nice alternative.

Using the table without the table cloth but with placemats and or a runner would be a nicer look for the room. I haven't used a tablecloth in 30 years.

It’s all dated…the style of the table and chairs, the doily-like tablecloth, the horizontal (Venetian) blinds, and, the light fixture.

Agree with some others, fabric Roman shades will update the space. A more ”modern” set of chairs will, too. And, yes, replace the chandelier.

find some images with elements that appeal to you, according to your setting....1st pic....the down directed lights with a warmer metal would be one change for the better. I also think a rug might work as an enhancement. 2nd pic...some sort of panels or valance at the windows give a more comfortable feeling which is what traditional is all about if thats what you want to stick with.

Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to share your thoughts and suggestions—I truly appreciate all the feedback! It gave me a lot to think about.

I did try turning the table as a few of you suggested, and I have to say, I really like how it opens up the space—great tip! I’ve added an updated photo to show the change.

I’m definitely considering some of the other ideas as well, like updating the lighting and possibly rethinking the window treatments. As for the tablecloth, it does have some sentimental value to me (it was my grandmother’s), so I may try to find a way to incorporate that feeling in a more updated look.

Your new photo shows more of the seating area. Try uploading the photo to paint and wallpaper sites to virtually try out using a paint color or wallpaper on the ceiling over the table to see if you like the results. You can do the same at lighting sites.

Cheryl, looks great! Just what I thought might happen. "Dated", no, more like part of your life. It is a lovely solid maple set from the 50s/60s and is quality. I like to see family memories become part of today's life. Before you spend money on window treatments that will become dated and faded, try raising the blinds during the day. No need for privacy then, as "if you can see out, no one can see in". Spend the money on a new light fixture, when you can. Hanging one the fits the size of the table (half its width) will make a statement in front of that lovely bay area.

Cheryl, meant to ask if there is a manufacturer's mark anywhere on the set? I see vintage maple on Chairish, ebay and etsy, selling for minimum $1,000.00 to several thousands.

This set of chairs, only, is $1,000.00.

Now that I see your floor, I'd recommend a more modern table and chairs for this area.
