Questions on bathroom remodel

last month

I had some questions on remodeling a bathroom, specifically on what to do with the window.

The plan is to remove the tub and make a larger shower. What are the options for the large window? This is actually for a friend so don’t have any dimensions at the moment. My thoughts were to make the window smaller (half the width it is now) but then that throws the top window off. She is on a tight budget so trying to figure out the best way to do this. She does need a window because there is no ventilation in that bathroom.

    Can she pull the shower out the wall down towards the photographer? The shower could then be made a smidge wider towards the window. Looks like a shower could be 30 by 60? or at least 48.

    Thanks for your response. my friend thinks she has some water damage/termite damage and if its found and can be fixed just by redoing the shower, that would be a great idea to just make the shower wider as you suggested

    i havent been on Houzz for years and im having a hard time finding the new posts every day. i have stumbled on them and then dont know how i got there can someone point me to how to find the new posts

    She could make the bottom window shorter, low enough to reach but high enough to be above the shower head. Then the shower could be from where the tub is to however wide she wants.

    There is a code problem with some of these suggestions, specifically:

    If the tub or shower surround has glass windows or walls, the glazing must be tempered glass or approved equal when the bottom edge of glazing is less than 60" above any standing or walking surface. (IRC R 308.4.5)

    See The Illustrated Rules of Good Bathroom Design, Guideline 15.

    Our solution is to replace the window with one that has a fiberglass (preferred) or vinyl frame (because a wood frame will rot in a shower) and tempered glass.

    The existing window is probably grandfathered and safe from code enforcement, However any change is going to require code compliance, e.g. tempered glass. Plus, tempered glass just makes common sense. It's too easy to put an elbow through the glass when showering, especially with a trip or slip. More adventure, I suspect, than your friend really wants.

    With respect to the dilemma you've posted, you really need to post a quick sketch of the bathroom (including dimensions listed for all walls/windows/doors/etc.) As @RNmomof2 zone 5 has commented, it might work better to run the length of the shower along the right wall + add extra width towards the windows vs. running the length of the shower along the window wall.

    Also, please include specific details on the wall with windows. Personally, it would be helpful if you would add the height/width of each window + dimensions for:

    1. The height between the window to ceiling (measured from the top of the window casing);

    2. The height from the floor to the bottom of the window (measured to the bottom of the window casing);

    3. The space between the two windows (from casing to casing); and

    4. The length of the wall from the left side of the window casing to the right wall;

    Also, include how wide the window casing is.

    You don’t need a window for ventilation if you have a good bathroom fan. I would be curious on how the outside will look with the proposed window changes.

    Thanks for the comments. I can’t figure out how to reply to a specific person. Starcraft builders, thanks for your reply. I did some research and it listed all the things you pointed out plus having to water proof around the window and putting in a slanted ledge. It sounds like that willl be a costly undertaking.

    dani, I know the houzzers usually want dimensions which I don’t have but basically there is no other way to move anything. To the right of the shower is the entry to the toilet room. and to the left you can see the corner of the vanity. So basically my friend wanted to remove the tub and run the shower where the tub is but that presents the problem with the windows. I had originally suggested to her to make that bottom window half its size width wise but then that throws the look off because the window above it would be wider. Also I think the window is too tall. I do need her to get the dimesions of that window without the shutter because the shutter frame throws things off too. Thank you for the lnfo on how to access the posts. I’m going to read it now. The only reason I found it now is because of the notifications.. After reading it, does that take you to whatever posts are listed in any areas? Design, bathroom etc., like new posts that are listed in all discussions is what I’m looking for. I can’t even find the one I posted.

    Valinta, there is no fan in that bathroom because of the tall celings. Does anyone know if they make fans for bathrooms with the high ceilings. That would eliminate a lot of problems.

    So I think what I’m asking is since it looks like that window will have to be dealt with if she enlarges the shower, what would be the most aesthetic way to do it?

    A fan doesn't matter on the height of the ceiling. It would just need to move a larger amt of air. Let me guess, there is a fan in the toilet room? It is not that difficult to add a fan in the main area. It might be easiest to just cover up the window and leave the top one. It is a project to make a window waterproof and able to stand up to daily water exposure.

    How far in front of the shower is the door? It appears that you can see a ft of wall or close to it. That would be able to make the shower perhaps 4 ft long. A small improvement but larger than current.

    We really need better pics and some measurements.

    I just tried to post a picture of damage to the wall on the right of the shower. I selected the photo but nothing happened. She used a moisture meter and it’s high there. After she has someone look at it and she knows what is going on there, we can proceed and I’ll try to post measurements of the room.

    " what would be the most aesthetic way to do it? "

    Remove it or deal with the waterproofing and a new vinyl window. No real other way.

    " I just tried to post a picture of damage to the wall on the right of the shower. I selected the photo but nothing happened. She used a moisture meter and it’s high there "

    Selective demo is in her future and may lead to more extensive repairs. Potentially she may be gutting this bathroom if the water has been leaking long enough. She may well find a moldy, rotting mess.
